It was the first day of school and you weren't particularly fond of the idea of returning back to school after summer, especially after the recent serial killings. Police were positioned around the city, with some of them questioning people near your school. It was a rather sunny day-- uncomfortably so. For your first class, you sat somewhat in the middle, in the back row, so the window-facing side of your face won't be burnt to a crisp.

The teacher was taking attendance, however most of the students didn't attend school. The first week was usually a drag after all. Just introductions.

The teacher called for each student to introduce themselves in front of the class. How do you introduce yourself?

    > Just mention your name (introverted)
    > Carefully pick your words (reflective)
    > Say something similar to what the previous students said (passive)
    > Other

    I pick my words.

If specifics are required, be polite and wish the other students the best of luck for coming school year.

You think carefully about what you would say, wishing your classmates the best of luck. The rest of the day seemed to glide by, though when you were going home, you couldn't shake the feeling that someone was following you. With a serial killer on the loose, you thought it best to stick to police-heavy paths despite the fact that it would take you longer to get home.

Your mom was a rather motherly woman. Chubby, with wide hips. She asked you how your day at school was and you mumbled something as you went to your room, which she seemed to take as a satisfactory answer. She also mentioned that dinner will be ready in a bit, so you tuned on the computer to pass the time. Dinner was uneventful. Your father was working overseas on a boat, so he wasn't present for dinner.

In order to pass the time, you went on your computer for a bit before going to sleep. The following day, your mom gave you a bit of spending money because you were 'all skin and bones', though she said that no matter what weight you were. School was more of the same uneventful things and thankfully it was over rather quickly.

After school, you had a choice of whether to go to the mall or save the spending money that your mother gave you.

    > Go to mall
    > Go straight home and save the money
    > Other

I go straight home. There's not a lot I want to buy, and what I do, I can over the internet.

You go straight home and put the money in your secret spot. It seems that your mom isn't home yet and left a note that there's some microwaveable dinner in the fridge. There wasn't much to do online. Your dad was halfway across the world, so he was asleep right now. You fell asleep rather early. The following day, you reflect upon how it's the third day of school and haven't made any friends yet. There was a full roster of students in your class by then, however, the class has divided itself into a nearly impregnable social web of cliques.

There are a few misfits like you who don't seem to have made friends yet. You have a feeling that they might not get along well with each other. One was a punky looking kid. You could figure out that he came from a poor family, mostly due to his beaten up things. He wasn't so poor though, that he couldn't afford accessories that gave his outfits a punk rock look.

The other two looked fairly well-off. One was an Asian kid who was always playing video games on his spare time. Even now, he was staring intently on his 3DS, unaware of the events going on around him. He was wearing a yellow beanie with a dark blue hoodie and some tight jeans. He was somewhat hard to read as his eyes were obscured by thick glasses.

The last one was a Muslim girl. She seemed rather shy, though. From what you know of Islamic culture, you guess that it would be hard to talk to her as they technically aren't supposed to have male friends. She was wearing a pink hijab, a yellow long sleeved shirt, a long white skirt and a pair of pink mary-janes. You could probably try to be friends with her seeing as her family didn't seem too conservative.

    >Approach the punk kid
    >Approach the Asian boy
    >Approach the Muslim girl
    >Do nothing
    >Other

I approach the Muslim girl for conversation. It seemed to me that actual conservative Muslim folk were pretty rare, so I figured it wasn't too bad a bet that I might get to know her.

You tried to introduce herself, though she didn't seem to keen about talking to you. Awkwardly, you decide to leave her alone for now. You approach again during lunch, and she apologized for 'snubbing' you earlier. You mentioned that it was fine, since you actually thought she wasn't allowed to talk to you. She mentioned that her family wasn't that stringent on the religion thing, but still believed in Allah.

The idea of moderate Islam was somewhat new to you, though it was oddly charming. You noticed that her lunch consisted of mostly vegetables and very little meat. She mentioned that she made the lunch herself and she didn't like touching blood. You were surprised about her making her own lunch as it looked very well made.

The end of the school day had the two of you part. It seems that her brother was also studying in the same school as you and had come to pick her up from class. At home, you saw policemen around your house and asked them what was wrong. One of them, tall and fat with bushy brown hair, asked you if you were Herschel Mattson. Your heart pounded. The look on his face just screamed bad news-- and bad news it was. Your mother was found dead last night.

The officer asked where your father was, but you mentioned he worked overseas.

    What do you do?

I wait to see if they have any more questions or want me to follow them somewhere, and if they don't, I ask if it would be safe for me to go home.

Emotionally, it was just easier to freeze up. It was hard to lose a mother, sure, but the impact of the situation has hit hard enough that it was hard to feel anything. The officers didn't leave, electing to stay in the police car parked outside your home. You began making calls to your relatives to inform them of the situation. Your father was the last to know due to the timezone difference.

One of your aunts offered to take you in and she lived fairly nearby. With your father's permission, you quickly accept the offer.

The following day, you had been met with stares from your fellow classmates, along with sympathy from the Muslim girl you made friends with. The town was small, so news traveled fast. Thankfully, you think, that also meant that the suspects were greatly narrowed down. It had always been hard to trust people for you since your family moved a lot. Your mother finally made the difficult decision of settling in your home town when she could no longer take the stress of moving every few months.

Though you've lived here for a year or two, and despite the fact that it was your hometown, you've barely made any friends. With your mother's murder, you didn't think that would be any easier. Thankfully, the weekend was coming soon so you can have a reprieve from the judgement of your fellow teenagers.

You had been set to move into your aunt's house by Monday-- an event that can't come soon enough. Friday came by quickly enough, though that might have been because you were distracted with how fast things had happened.

How do you spend your weekend?
    >Examine your feelings
    >Reflect on the effects of your mother's death
    >Distract yourself with the computer
    >Other

I examine my feelings. If I don't keep track of myself, make sure I don't let myself get out of hand, things will end even worse than they've gotten.

You realize that you might not get another chance like this any time soon, so you decide to do some introspection. Diving deep into yourself, you reach an understanding of how much your mother meant to you and how much her death has cost you. Silently, you grieve for her. Arrangements have been made for your father to go home for a few days for her funeral next week. It's been nearly half a year since you last saw him.

You didn't realize when you fell asleep, but when you woke up, your aunt was there to pick you up. Thankfully everything you need was already packed and you only needed to return for the non-essentials. She set you up in the guest room, though it seems like it's your room now.

The following morning saw you waking up in an unfamiliar room. After pushing the grogginess away, you remember how you moved to your aunt's place after your mother got killed. In a hurry to just end the day, you take a quick bath and go to school.

Re: When Demons P(r/l)ay-- The Game

I suddenly realize that I should look into the serial killings, especially to see how they relate the death of my mother. Thus, I spend the day waiting more than anything else, though I do try and talk with the girl again, if I see her.

Steeling your resolve, you decide to look into the serial killings. The connection was easy enough to make-- Your mother's death followed the pattern of the serial killings. Body parts were missing as if they were eaten by wild animals, but the bite marks looked human.

You spent the day trying to figure out how to go about investigating-- especially since the police are investigating it too. They probably wouldn't appreciate a plucky teenager trying to solve a serial murder case. You felt a touch on your shoulder, the arm covered in a light-yellow sleeve. You look up to see her pink hijab-covered face. She looked like she was going to say something, but didn't. Instead, she gives you this look of pity.

You thank her for her concern. Before you return to your thoughts, she manages to say "May Allah magnify your reward, and make perfect your bereavement, and forgive your departed. It is something we say to those who have lost someone." You let a smile creep up your face. From how the media portrays them, you didn't expect Muslims to be nice, but they are.

The media doesn't select representations of groups based on the truth of their composition, but on their loudest part. I continue to try and figure how to investigate, maybe even contact the police and ask if I can offer anything to their investigation. I'm a little afraid for the girl though, not the least reason for that being that I feel a little attached to her. I need to remember to ask her what her name is.
