A man sits. He is calm, contemplating an event like no other, larger than any before it. He twirls his wrist straightens his tie, waiting for inspiration to strike.
And so it does.
The man has a thought, of what would happen if he were to take either 17 or 23 exceptional personages, and invite them to a game? Sure, it had been done before, time and time again, but that is only the set-up! They wouldn't compete on a ship, an island, or a mansion. He wouldn't take them far away, no, all he would need is a facility. A single building, with enough living space for them and the staff that will set up their challenges. He had just the place too, at the center of the city, surrounding the many people who will soon follow him and his friends on an adventure unlike any other. BUT, that wasn't the twist.
The twist would be the manner of recruitment, how he would get these exceptional people to start on their quest, the style of the game, focusing on money and growth and loss, what the contestants would do, their moments of leisure and rest and planning, and finally... his final twist. Somewhere, hiding among the other contestants, there would be someone with an edge. One person, more exceptional than the rest, would have knowledge that no others did. Who he was would never be mentioned. If he was still in play would never be said. It would be a secret, an ever-present paranoia lurking around their mind.
Yes. The man was pleased with this. As was his studio and his producers and his sponsors. It was perfect. All it needed was a name.
There were many names that he could take, focusing on the money or the mole or the locale, but in the end he had an epiphany.
"How about we call it..."
Well, this looks neat, what is it?
Calcumniation has three root words.
-Calculation - the act or process of calculating, usually with numbers such as in money
-Illumination - the act or process of enlightening, usually with regard to knowledge
-Calumniation - the act or process of making false and malicious statements about, usually with words
So, as alluded by our mysterious host's musings, this is a game involving these three things in different capacities.
Can you answer that in a less smug manner?
Sure I guess.
Now, if you've been paying attention (or stalking), you'll notices that I've been a little lovesick puppy over an old friend of mine, Niall. Now, this guy, he's gone now, for a buncha reasons that are out of his control that suck. Before that though, he ran a game called Shank-A-Bitch (2). And before that, he started up a game called Tontine.
Along with the Brain Trust (which included me and a few other wonderful people yet to be introduced), he planned a plethora of games that would test the skills of twenty-three lucky people. With the exception of the first Pauper game and the first Privileged game, all of this was unused. Now that it's summer and that I've got more time coming up on my hands, I thought that it would be time that it stopped being that. What this means is that this game will be functionally similar to Tontine except for two significant changes which will be outlined soon.
Rules of Play.
There are two aspects to Calcumniation, the first of which is virtually completely ripped from Tontine with almost no changes.
The first is The Challenges. ---
---
The Challenges will be both new and old, anything and everything that me and the Brain Trust can think of and throw at you. There's going to be a lot going on and that's why I'll need help along with players.
The second is the issue of The Informed. ---
---
Game Timeline
A) The Challenges and the "Day" begin
Aa)Players are informed of results of the Informed Poll
Ab)Informed receives edge
Ac)Privileged's Challenge Begins and Ends
Ad)Demotion to Pauper Occurs
B) Paupers' Challenge begins
Ba)Paupers' Challenge is Judged
Bb)Player Elimination Occurs
C) Informed Poll begins
Ca)First Place Winner of "Day's" challenge receives information
Cb)Preparation for next set of challenges
Cc)"Day" ends
Wow, that was a lot of words, anything else I should know?
Oh yes, Participation in Calcumniation, like in Tontine, comes in three flavors. Judge, Brain Trust, and Contestant.
Judge - By Invitation Only. These people will participate as deciders in some of the competitions to come. They will do so impartially and with the final say in their respective challenge.
Brain Trust - Exactly like Tontine, anyone who sends me a PM shall enter a realm beyond, where they are to do to me what I did to Niall. Reign me in, remind me of what matters, keep me on target. They are to keep this she-bang going should I unfortunately fail to do so and they will each have as much power over you all as I will. Together, we will determine the challenges, keep that quality of play as high as possible, and make sure that I don't do something Balls Stupid. They are all the best people possible and they can join but asking me via IRC, Skype, a forum PM, or anything. If they are anonymous or public in their Brain Trustery is up to them.
Contestant -These guys are the stars of the show, you, YOU READER, this is what You Want. If you read all of the above then You Know that this is the place to be! Contestants will participate in the various challenges that the game will offer for the chance to be crowned winner and take home $1,000,000 hypothetical dollars. This game will take A While so if you could devote a good amount of time to it, that'd be great! You won't have to do something every day, but be sure to check for new developments as often as possible. The Challenges are made to be as accessible as possible and will have appropriate time limits to them. Stuff's going to be fun and intense and I really hope that you join in on the fun!
Is... is it over yet?
Yeap, the gist is that this is going to be an online game-show similar to Niall's Tontine only with an added twist of a Slightly Informed Party. There will be prizes and fun and you should join and have a good time if you promise to devote the time for it! Good luck!
