Ultimate Turbo Fighting Game Discussion Arcade Edition

This is for ALL THOSE FIGHTING GAMES WE PLAY. There's already threads for a couple of them (Skullgirls and Marvel 3, respectively) so if you wanna just chat about them go there.

Other than discussing the less current fighting games (and also laughing at the shitty ones) this thread shall serve mainly as a matchmaking system. Post what games you play and on what system you play them (only post games that you can play online (also be sure to give your username for your systems)) and they will be added to the MASTER MATCHMAKING LIST, shown below.

    Dive kicks are notoriously PREDICTABO

(I do not play anything online. I’m really semi-retired from fighting games and I wasn’t ever good. I just talk a lot.)

    FOOT FOOTDIVE

Toss me on that list, bugger.

    PSN: Cervos
    Skullgirls

I have SFIII Online, SSFIV(AE), and UMVC3 but I suck balls at them, so I don't play them!

If you ARE going to add me, put like, MSPA forums in the request because I am terrible at associating different names to whatever.

    McSharkson on PSN.

I have SSF4, BB:CT and BB:CS, but I haven't played any of them for forever, so good luck with that. I suppose you could PM me if you wanted to play them but otherwise yeah. Skullgirls is where I'm at most of the time now.

DudewitdaK on Xbox LIVE (all alone lololol)
I have UMVC3, which I mostly just screw around in, Third Strike Online, where I just mess with low-tiers, as well as Skullgirls and King of Fighters XIII, which I play more seriously.
EDIT: Also, King of Fighters XIII is amazing, although the netcode's kinda screwy.

I've heard almost entirely good things about King of Fighters from everyone who plays it. The problem is that the one issue I hear about it is the netcode and I don't know any locals that play. :\

None of the character designs really click with me either like BB Hood, Tron, and Peacock do. I'd probably try out Athena but I dunno.

There is one character I saw in recent KoF games that makes me actually want to play it.

    and possibly make you:

There's just something about Green Fire that fascinates me. This is why I made up an Ash Crimson Palette for Parasoul:

I've also heard a lot of things about King of Fighters, and was tempted to try it out in the one arcade that had it back in Austin, but I had no idea how any character played, and didn't take the time to find out.

That said, looking around at characters...

Dat second super. (:45s in) If I ever got KoF XIII I'd main him solely for the purpose of landing that at the end of each match.

Also, hard to go wrong with Terry Bogard. ARE YOU OKAY? BUSTAAA WOLF!

The EX version of that super (takes 2 meters instead of 1) is VERY strong for an EX super, and can combo off of air hits that most attacks can't (it has an "anywhere juggle" property), and looks even more explosive to boot.

So many EX supers and NeoMAXes are just awesome to watch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KYWNwHlNp4 That's one of my favorites (although I haven't bought the character yet, he's one of the 3 downloadables for 5 dollars each... really my only issue with the game besides the less-than-stellar netcode).

I've seen Ash. He's pretty cool. How's his zoning game?

While we're on the subject of SNK fighters, anybody here played Garou: Mark of the Wolves? I'm not any good at it myself but it's a lot of fun.

His zoning game is good, although zoning in KOF in general is tough, due to the pace of the game and how powerful close range pressure can be. Also, reversals like Ash's upper kick generally aren't as invincible as your typical Shoryuken, so you have to time it right, and you might not be able to get it at all if the opponent attacks from a hop rather than a full jump.

If you are gonna zone, though, Ash, Kensou, and King are some of your best bets.

Yeah, I saw his EX version in a combo video and holy fuck, he has some ridiculous chains, specially with a Neo MAX.

Aesthetics wise, Kula's Freeze Execution is one of my favorite supers I've seen, though I haven't gone through all the characters. Also, the maniacal laugh on Flames Iori's Neo MAX.

My favorite fighting game is Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3. I love the 6-punch combo.

I don't have anything against Mary Sues/Gary Stus. BB Hood is a human that is so ridonkulously powerful that the Darkstalkers are intimidated by her, that's pretty fucking Sueish right there.

Re: Ultimate Turbo Fighting Game Discussion Arcade Edition

Not sure if serious... but I’ll take a shot at it anyway.

The whole issue of what defines a Sue is a very long-winded endeavor, whose depths I shall not plumb (for every trait that’s bad for a character to have, there is at least one counterexample that totally makes it work). The easiest way is to identify the problem with them, and that is what they do to a story. If that were to be summed up in one verb, it would be “ruin”. A Mary Sue is, for the purposes of this post, a character who ruins the story they are in by virtue of who they are. Just getting that out of the way, because if that isn’t clear enough, the discussion could simply stretch on until someone coughs up a lung. This sort of definition also allows for different people to have a different opinions about the Sue-ness of a character and the degree thereof, which is in fact a thing that happens. And it provides a reasonable explanation of why so many people have a blind spot for the Sues they create. The strength of being iffy is also its weakness.

This definition also has a curious (but important) property: I can therefore posit that B.B. Hood being OP does not make her a Sue. It has to actually break and detract from the story that’s being told to count.

No matter how powerful a character is, people will accept it as long as the story works. Where the sin with powerful characters comes in is having them winning at everything without reasonable effort or cost. Nobody really cares to see that, unless it’s a gag of some sort.

So with this idea in hand we might ask a few questions and (that I’m coming up with on the spot; this isn’t anything codified anywhere as far as I know and is by no means an exhaustive list of story-breaking practices), focused on common ways a character can intrinsically break a story:
    - Does this character break suspension of disbelief? Are they out of line with the setting? Darkstalkers is full of weird. It would be weird if she weren’t weird.
    - Has this character, by being introduced, broken the setting (e.g. breaking established rules, upsetting existing relationships in ways that don’t make sense...)? Not to my knowledge.
    - Does the world basically revolve around this character to the utter neglect of others? No. She’s something of a side character, really.
    - Are this character’s successes and failures plausible? B.B. Hood doesn’t win every fight by default. That’s up to you. She’s powerful, sure,
    - Does this character happen to be an overly idealized character (does not have to be good ideal)? If so, is this to the story’s detriment? Actually, B.B. Hood happens to be an idealized evil character. But this is a parable, you see. It plays into the classical philosophical question of what makes a monster and what makes a man. And in her case, the monster is man. No demerits here.
    - Is this character the creator acting out a power fantasy, or an evil fantasy? Considering the designers aren’t really young blondes, I doubt it.

Ask these questions about Ash, and you may find you still don’t agree with me. Well, that’s fine; this is just a casual exercise in critical thinking. Musing on the disease, rather than the symptoms. Only what, a 600ish word post?

All in all, I think you do mind Mary Sues. Certainly there are characters you think are just plain badly done? Characters who annoy you to no end and it’s pretty clear you’re supposed to like them? Special snowflakes that aren’t that special after all? Maybe nothing comes to mind, but maybe you can look out for it. Or maybe I just think too much. Or not enough. (we need emotional content).

Next time on Boring Talk with Boring People, we discuss which brand of cheap plastic colander is the best for spaghetti noodles. *cue relaxing public television music*

Quarter circle forward into half circle back? That is something I have legitimately never seen before, at least not for a single move.

KoF has some quarter circle into half circle commands, which is weird.

It's not as bad as Street Fighter's super inputs, like Back (hold) forward, back forward

Or god forbid Blanka's Ultra combo II

I had to use the pictures because I have no idea how to explain it. Fuck this move.

The quarter-to-half circle stuff is actually pretty easy. That Blanka zig-zag charge bullshit... FUCK. It's even worse with Vega's Ultra 1, where depending on if you do the motion as written or end at up-back instead of up-forward, you'll jump to a different wall. Fuck that noise.
In fact, I don't think KOF (XIII, anyway) has any charge-based supers at all. It's all motions except for a few where you have to press a few buttons in order.

EDIT: *looks up Raging Storm input*

I'm used to MAHVEL, where the most complicate motion you have to use is the dragon punch.
