actually, i could def. see the time aspect consisting of lots of major initiative dickery (thinking tidus from FFX--or any time mage really). pop in a "timeclone" to add themselves to the initiative counter a second+ time, (thieves/rogues) taking enemy initiative and givving it to themselves or allies, etc.

though that was probably your intention for the start (in fact i feel you've mentioned it in the thread before).
yep yep, that is the general idea. "big" skills take longer to use, so to not get cancelled yourself, you have to pay attention to when the enemies get to act.

and initiative dickery is not limited to time players, though they will get the most expansive powers. goodness, the possibilities. for example, normally you cannot tell what an enemy is going to do will they enter "act phase", and even then you can only tell what they are doing in a broad sense (normal attack, spell, etc), but a skill from a seer of time could show you what the enemy is going to do at any time.

also, IQ memo is up on pesterchum.

gonna give this a bump back to the front page.

    how's this coming along, anyway?

ive actually paused to figure out where i stand and what i need. im probibly going to end up "hiring" someone to redo the first post for me.... my organizational skills suck.

ive also paused because another hobby of mine has come to the forefront. im taking part in a video editing tournament. youtube poop tennis, a trios tourney using my variant doubles rules. IQ development will depend on if and when my team get eliminated.

i still may work on the current project here and there (should be "john vs the imp" proof of concept demo), but i have to keep free for video editing, as that is actually on a time limit.

in the meantime, i suppose we can find and use a "community relations manager" - someone to concisely consolidate the current information, and rewrite it into the first post.

allright, paused long enough to recuperate and get a lot of ideas.

coding on john vs the imp will commence once ive hammered out a syntax for level progression rules in the raws (the xml)., translation of the minimalistic data stored in the monster raws into full gamedata objects, and added functions to the player gamedata object to handle level ups and combat results.

then comes the menus. first will be the debugging controls, so as to let you actually test those "level up" and "collect combat results" functions, as well as level progression, and the overall combat system. i suppose before i do anything else i had better tell the whole combat interface to load the party.

then i get to do the actual combat menus, the actual combat system, and then i finally finish it off with the" combat over" sequence and update the state of everything, gamdata-wise.

if anyone is curious as to why i am not just using the "main" gamedata object in the actual combat subroutine, it is because of time. the aspect, not the dimension. im figuring at least one power related to time would reset a battle back to its initial conditions, or possibly even negate the fact that there was an "encounter" at all.

on that note, i should probably periodically save the state of everything, and possibly a list for each participant of each action taken, and when it was taken. not only would this be a way to save replays as sharable files (show off your greatest battles!) but also: time shenanigans.

and that in turn gets me to thinking about dualtechs. time and space will have some really sicknasty combos. that's still a ways off, unfortunatly this demo is only going to have the most basic actions. and sprite summoning.

also, much like the editor, this tech demo will grow. i plan to use it for overall balancing, and as a place to test new features before i commit them to the production code.

also of note: i am still looking for quite a bit of help, this is the current list:

i need someone who does not use a 64 bit operating system (read: who uses a 32 bit operating system) to package the editor. this is simple work, you just duplicate my development environment and run a script.

i need a program icon for the editor.

on that note, an editor song would be neat, too. if i got an acceptable one, i would immediately integrate into the editor and release. if i got several acceptable songs, i would do up a quick music selector interface.

i need a community relations manager. someone who can periodically update the first post with information i put out here and in release notes, etc. someone who can spread the word around the internet, and get people interested, because i suck at that.

good to see you've got a plan.

for the replay/time shenanigan logs: that's a really cool idea, though you might wanna have timey stuff dump after matches, and have the player opt to/not to save replays after a battle (avoids having too many/too large files crowding everything if you have a bunch of minor battles/etc that aren't noteworthy)

the timey stuff exists only in active memory till after the battle, when you get the option to save it. it'll likely end up as a button or radio button on the "YOU WON A COMBAT" screen.

so like a little window after the congratulations screen "would you like to save your replay? Y / N"?

its still in the actual combat window, it'll be a little spot for messages. post battle it will give you the "you earned x exp, x money, and x items"

its just like final fantasy. ten or earlier.

just a heads up to the two or three of you who still care about this:

ive paused again... changed jobs and am putting in a 50 hour workweek. doing physical things. hopefully i'll be able to pick back up soon, but i have no clue when i will not be either a) not working 50 hours a week, or b) back into shape so that a 9 hour workday of lifting heavy shit does not exaust me so much i pass out a couple of hours after work.

I know I haven't contributed much of anything, but I still care.
