There needs to be a Bear Rule for cases like this one. So that we can keep talking about them.

The question is, were you in the majority, minority, or unanimity? If you were in an unanimity, then yes, you can reject the hypothesis. However, in the other two cases, it's not so clear. For one, he could spite the majority, and tick off a large portion of the fanbase. On the other hand, he could spite the minority, and make it feel more personal. Either of those two options can and has been used, depending on the vocality, disparity, and his general mood at the time.

Have you ever been in one of those situations where someone you know makes a wild claim so ludicrous that you actually feel stupider after hearing it? They keep insisting that it is true despite making a complete lack of sense, and it gets to the point that you actually feel embarrassed to know them. You drop the subject strictly to maintain their dignity and go on to talk about something less ridiculous, like politics, weather, or those really smart chimps that can do arithmetic. Eventually you take your leave and head home, but that so-called fact still nags at you. You know that you are right, but you feel an intense need to validate your logic. You look it up in the encyclopedia, completely sure of your self, only to find that their wild, asinine claim is one hundred percent true. The case I had just received from a client was exactly like that.

It was one of those chilly, February nights in New York; the kind that is cold enough to make the hair on your arms stand up straight like a lamp post, but still too warm to justify standing up, weaving between poorly spaced furniture, opening the closet door that always gets stuck, and trying to find a sweater that doesn't feel like it's made from woven facial hair. I could see through the tiny window on the other side of my office that it had started to snow. They were not those thick puffs of slush that tended to pile up on the sidewalk and keep you from moving your car, but rather those perfect, wispy flakes that cover the city in a quarter-inch thick sheet of porcelain white, the kind that makes you wish you had a car just so you could move it. My office was small, neat, and furnished simply, with each chair, desk and book case in the absolute worst place one could put it. I had a bookshelf filled with novels, encyclopedias, note pads, dictionaries, curios, and for some reason a coloring book. The shelf was wedged behind the door, so that you could only open it two thirds of the way. I would have displaced it to the back wall, but that is where the movers dropped it two years ago when I first leased this room, and I had no intention of dragging it across the thick blue carpet. My desk faced the back wall of the room, and consequently, away from the door. The desk was covered in various papers, a plaque with the name “Johnathan T. Cormeyer P.I.” embossed in it, one of those ugly desk lamps with the green glass shade, and a few picture frames.
It was some time between six and seven in the evening when I heard a knocking at the door. I would have gone home earlier, but I had it on good authority that a woman in distress had been advised to seek my services, and I can't exactly afford to turn down a case.
