Suggestion:

Seperate "Plot" and "Building" reserves do not work because both of them are making edits to the same picture anyway.
Just make one kind of reserve for any kind of edit to the image, and you can do stuff like talk to people without bothering. If you want your guy to punch someone in the same room in the face then you can do that without editing the base image to represent it (you could draw a totally new picture for that, like at the start of the thread!)

Anything that involves editing the picture at the same time as someone else is editing someone else just makes things confusing and messes up continuity though

Just keep it to "I am doing something with the picture, leave it alone" rather than "I am doing plot with the picture" or "I am adding something to the picture"
If you are doing something that does not edit the image you usually won't have to worry too much about being ninja'd anyway! And if you think you will then just say so, people here aren't going to kill you for asking politely if they can wait up.

Well, the fire is attached to a big machine of SCIENCE and SCIENCE trumps magic, thus, the fire is capable of damaging the artifact.

In addition, as Whim said, faries are one of the most flammable substances on earth, and when the artifact ate their energy, it gained their flammability.
