Yeah I consider Lent to be much more of just a character building exercise. Giving up something to prove that you can do it.

I'm pretty sure I couldn't give up the forums though, let alone Homestuck. It's just too much of a part of my way of life right now. Bluh.

Haha, I know. The closest I ever came to like "giving up" Homestuck was during the first Community Re-Read (the next one starts 6/12 btw. /plug-in). I didn't do anything fandom-wise, use the fora, or read the updates. All I did was go on the IRC and re-read Homestuck.... which means I was still reading it :P

Oh yeah I guess I stopped reading for the Cascade wait. But that was some seriously painful stuff.

Re: I Gave Up Homestuck for Lent

Hm. My understanding was that Lent ended on Good Friday, hence my being able to read it again then. I'm not Catholic, so maybe I got it wrong? Either way, I would very much like to be reading again come Friday.

I originally chose soda myself, but then I realized that giving up soda is a good idea regardless of religious observances. Homestuck, on the other hand, is something that I enjoy and do not find physically or spiritually poisonous, though it can lean a bit on the distracting side given how much time I'm willing to put into reading it/about it. Lent is a period of mourning (hence giving up something enjoyed) as well as a period of culling distractions (hence giving up something that occupies my time).

    --EDIT--

The tab thing is because I didn't feel like editing my bookmarks menu. I see the list of links in the lefthand sidebar, and I see that John (who is unnamed at that point) is turning 13 on April 13, 2009, but that's it.

I am glad to hear that the OP has fought through and outlasted his or her bout of the madness.

I agree that this god is a thing that he should give up.

Any extradimensional entity that wants to act as an obstacle between you and your earthly temptations sounds like something straight out of a cosmic horror.

Giving up Homestuck for lent would make me turn to Atheism on the first day.

Lucky I already did that though.

I guess it's just the fact that everybody assumed you were talking about Christianity in general oh god don't let this be a religion thread.

    Lent.

Its a christian thing. It lasts for a period of about six weeks leading up to Easter. Its "celebrated" by prayer, penance, and self denial.

On Topic: Thats cool OP. Its nice to take a break once awhile. Usually when I take Homestuck breaks, I come back to tons of updates. Its kind of like I'm coming back home from a long trip, only to find a crap load of unopened presents. Needless to say its awesome.

Edit: God damnit.. This thread turned into a athiesm vs religion thing already? What is wrong with people?

Its simply just a form of penance. Not a big deal.

Dude. Did you just come into this thread simply to question the OP's faith, and pretty much start shit? Real mature.

No, but that seems to have been the objective of everyone who has attempted to "start shit" over such an insignificant post, including you.

I mock a fictional deity who would be opposed to a webcomic, and you guys try to start a shitstorm over it. What the fuck is wrong with so many people and their moral crusades over NOTHING? Self-righteous internet warrior assholes.

And yeah remind me to give a fuck about being infracted for this post too, when I get persecuted for other people's bullshit hostility under the guise of religious sensitivity. The OP already said he isn't even religious.

Jesus CHRIST I legitimately do hate all you politically correct wannabe fuckwads, wherever I go I always see someone trying to stroke their morality cock with more interest in how bloated and gorged they can make it than their interest in whether or not something actually matters.

what about the >60% of this forums posting population who dont have cocks. can they stroke their "morality pussies". why does morality dwell in the genitals? thats a serious question, wait.

e: aaaahahaha wait got a minor infraction for his madpost and a severe infraction for reporting himself, good work tynic

ON TOPIC hey op if youre not catholic why are you doing lent? i know a bunch of nonreligious people who practice it as well. whats the deal with that. is it like penance or some getting-closer-to-the-Big-Man thing or is it nontheistically Good For The Soul?

    no one told me
I guess that's what I get for being too busy to visit the IRC. :c

When I was younger and had restricted options when it came to money making, I would strike a deal with my mom where I got 500 SEK if I didn't eat candy for a whole year. I think I managed two years (not after one another) and maybe a half more.

I think I would be able to give up Homestuck for a while (not a whole year, mind you). But...I'm not sure what I would do if I couldn't read the forum. I'd have so much free time...But I would miss so much awesome talking. Of course, it'd be impossible to read the forum without getting spoilered so whatever, I guess I'm never taking a (voluntary) break.

I think it's the "good for the soul" thing. Sometimes if you go without something for a while, and come back to it after you feel refreshed. Kind of like a sense of accomplishment, or something like that.

Quirk recommended I gave up Vriska Homestuck for Lent too, but in a bigger way. No fanart, no chats, no partaking in the community of it at all to help with my Vriskaangst.

Not that I did, but stuff like that is good exercise on occasion, religious or not.

I just don't have the will to try something like that I guess? I probably totally should, though. Give up internet for two weeks, that'd be interesting.

It may be a little late, but I'm giving up Homestuck for lent.

    Between today and April 13.

I actually considered doing this, but I gave up online chatrooms instead. Did a lot of good for me, too. I hope your go worked out well, likewise!

Wow you guys actually gave stuff up?

It totally forgot about it and ended up doing nothing

Giving up Homestuck would have killed me. Not worth it, man.

My friend tried to give up excessive eating...about 6 months after getting over her mild anorexia.

Needless to say we all hit her repeatedly.

Or at least I did. That's friendship, right? Well-timed beatings.

    This right here, homeskillz.

I wouldn't have given up Homestuck anyway. I think I may have inadvertantly given up My Little Pony episodes/Equestria Daily for Lent, but again complete accident.

it isn't really a debate when nobody is even arguing against him :/ but that is not a topic for here.

I want to try and see how long I can go without reading new updates. I tried a while back and it lasted.... like 3 days lol. I will go the entire month of June, however, without reading any updates, I have already decided! That will be fun.

Re: I Gave Up Homestuck for Lent

I'm not a Catholic, but as a Christian, I want to take my religious observances more seriously, and I aim to work towards that with concrete steps, small as they may be (e.g. giving up a webcomic for a period of time for enhanced spiritual focus).

Incidentally, I did not do the research. Even though Lent is over at this point, Lenten observances continue through Easter vigil. Thus, I did not pick HS back up yesterday, but rather will wait until tomorrow. (Fortunately, I was out of town yesterday with no Internet access, so no insanity from that particular unexpected extra day.)

The point of the topic: Lenten observances are almost over, and I'm excited about the fact that I'm coming up on a giant wall of updates. It's sort of like what everyone else is experiencing for 4/13, but sooner. :P

It was somewhere shortly after "[S] Prince of Heart: Rise Up". I'm going to have to reread some bits I've read before to refresh my memory.
