The Webcomics Thread: More Webs-Per-Comic than Spider-Man

Welcome to the catch-all webcomics discussion thread! This is where you talk about webcomics you like, or ones you dislike, and so on! If a comic has a separate thread dedicated to it elsewhere in the forum, it's probably better if discussion pertaining only to that comic is done there, and not here.

Below is a big list of recommended comics compiled from previous iterations of this thread.

    Still updating:
Dinosaur Comics -Talking dinosaurs describing a variety of interesting comics but never changing the panels! It's quite popular! And there are plenty of them!
Penny Arcade -The two gamer guys comic! The Gangbunch fora, predecessor to the MSPA Forums had its origins on their forums! It's near and dear to many here!
    Dr. McNinja

Skimming through the "Still updating" list, both http://www.alessonislearned.com/ and http://requiem.seraph-inn.com/ have been done for... years, I think.

There are probably more, if someone wants to do a thorough check.

For replacements, I'd nominate http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/ and http://fribergthorelli.com/wbk/index.php . Both solid stuff.

Seconding Unsounded, the art is excellent and the story is great.

Not necessarily recommending it for the OP, but a webcomic I enjoy (and may have brought up before? maybe I found it through an older incarnation of this thread) is A Girl and Her Fed. Ghosts, psychics, politics, and mutant talking koalas ahoy. Admittedly it's got its flaws, the drawings in the early strips aren't good and there are pacing problems (including large text dumps). But the story's still good in my opinion, and the archives are slowly being redone (one a week, and there are two new strips a week).

Thanks for the corrections/suggestions! I edited to OP accordingly.

If you catch more mistakes or want more things added, just say so.

You know, Dominic Deegan has been going for years and years, too. With nearly as much regularity.

That sort of reliability is kind of impressive, abstractly? But not necessarily the sort of thing that makes you want to read the comic.

I actually did read Schlock Mercenary for a few years, but the strip has some real issues. (My largest complaints being the endless repeated "gags" that weren't really funny in the first place - did you put your foot in your mouth, weirdguy? Did you do it literally for comic exaggeration? Oh man! Ha ha ha! - and the author's issues with women.) I guess I'd say I enjoyed it when I didn't know any better?

Which, I mean, if you can get into that, more power to you. But I wouldn't recommend it for the very prestigious and selective in the OP.

    PUT PARANATURAL UP THERE

    DO IT THIS INSTANT.

Oh and yeah, willsaveworldforgold has been so solid. It's significantly exceeded all my expectations for the quality and humor of principally a sprite comic.

And I agree with Unsounded! First few chapters are especially painful dialogue-wise, but this latest chapter has been oh-so-pretty.

Starslip is good Sci-Fi. If you like Sci-Fi at all, go read it.

Edit: I don't mean it is really good, but it is certainly enjoyable Sci-Fi, so if you like enjoying things, ya know.

i think those are flimsy excuses to attack a comic that you don't particularly like, because if we were going by prestigious standards, overcompensating wouldn't be on the list

but i get it, we're supposed to be hipsters, ironically posting on a message board sponsored by one of the most popular webcomics in history, in of itself built upon an enormous mountain of repeated gags, and featuring the most vicious, bloodthirsty women you can run away from

"but they're sophisticated gags about sloppy makeouts and throwing heavy objects like pachinko balls"

isn't taking things out of context fun???

and of course dinosaur comics is on the top of this list, even though this board is roomies with the other board already

edited note: I LIKE ALL OF THESE COMICS AND I AM OKAY WITH YOU EXCLUDING SOME OF THEM FROM YOUR MADE UP CLUB IF IT MAKES YOU HAPPY

Starslip is also ending soon by the sounds of things so if you are going to read it you should do it soon.

I don't have anything against straightforward silliness. Never said I did. (Ex.: I read Dr McNinja, Oglaf, Penny-Arcade, etc, etc. Not particularly highbrow, but funny!)

My issues with Schlock Mercenary are with the quality of its jokes - which kind of suffer from the regularity of the schedule, I think ("forcing it?") - and with the artist's gender issues. I felt like I should warn the other people reading the thread - there's a lot of comic to wade through before coming to any conclusions! But I'm not trying to say you're a bad person for liking it, or anything like that.

The bit about the "prestigious and selective [list]" was a joke, if that wasn't obvious. (Also, I'm good at typing.)

Re: The Webcomics Thread: More Webs-Per-Comic than Spider-Man

could you explain on the gender issues thing? it's hard to tell when he's got a wife and daughter :P

also while i enjoy quality jokes, i don't think that the jokes in this comic are actually being affected by the schedule per se (he's got a massive buffer anyway), and it sounds like you haven't actually read the more recent ones (which is relative because once again, there's a lot to dig through)

but i wouldn't put them in the same category as deegan lol

either way a lot of other comics tend to focus too much on trying to put quality in, and either end up not really updating that much at all, or ending halfway into a story arc, and frankly it's appalling because they don't really plan that far ahead but everybody loves them to death because that one page was really pretty

anyway, a lot of the early ones are low quality but that's because they're from like i don't know how many years back, but damn, that is pretty much digging at the bottom of the barrel

Ooo I have another recommendation for the OP:

    DOUBLE K
"Miami Vice meets Gurren Lagann in the most explosive, high-octane buddy cop comedy in the HISTORY OF POLICE and/or INTERNET FAN COMICS"
It is every bit as rad as it sounds.

The gender issues are... it's a weird complaint, but it really stood out for me when I did that archive re-read I mentioned. (About six months ago.) Men are never allowed to compliment women on their appearance. If they do, or even do something that sounds like it, they're met with immediate, comic violence. This basically results in a situation where the only way two people can end up in a relationship is by being shoved into it by a third party. It's bizarre and unhealthy and smacks of deep repression.

Again - I'm not putting the comic in the same category as a Dominic Deegan. Like the humor issues, the gender/relationship stuff was just something that bothered me.

...the second part of your post I don't quite understand. I'd take a gorgeous (and/or hilarious) but incomplete/irregular comic over a mediocre but consistent comic any day. Would the world really be a better place if the artists of Prequel, The Meek, or Dresden Codak were trying to force themselves to meet a MWF schedule, no matter what it did to the quality of their art/humor?

Ok so reading the comments section on the tournament introduced me to Unsounded. It is pretty good! Its a fantasy genre story that doesn't rely on video game mechanics or gag humor. Plus the world building is fantastically in depth! Also the author does wonderful things with the backgrounds of the page to "bring out" the image. You should check it out.

Once again, I can second this suggestion. The recent updates have been very climactic and suspenseful, if you read through it quickly you may be able to catch the tail-end of the enjoyment that brings. Either way, it is shaping up to be a pretty epic story, in which the word epic is actually used properly.
