I've been working on a Homestuck dating sim since sometime last year (with a long hiatus over the summer, fall and winter due to health reasons.) I finally picked it up again recently and I'm looking for people who are interested in helping out.
Right now I'm looking for people to help me with creating the visuals. My plan is to have it look as close as possible to the comic (since the comic is like a text based adventure game to begin with) so I want to recreate the troll room layouts, make new layouts for the school, and assemble properly organized and layered PSD files of the character sprites. I figure if nothing else, the room layouts from the comic and easily manipulable character sprites would be useful for people. If you want to help with editing sprites or have sprite edits you've already done that you'd be willing to let me incorporate into the game, I'd appreciate it.
Once I have the visual side of things under control, I'm going to start working on the script. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to organize roleplaying sessions that might help generate ideas. After that I plan on looking into music and programming. Feel free to contact me if you feel like getting involved in any aspect of that.
These are my notes from over a year ago. They're a little outdated but should give a general idea of the premise:
Initial Ideas:
Game takes place during the Troll’s 9th solar sweep (approximately 18 earth years) at which point the young trolls are enrolled in their last year at the ubiquitously required minimal level of general knowledge and social skills inculcation facility, Alternia Academy. This facility is inexplicably staffed by denizens of Prospit and Derse for reasons that will never, in the course of the game, be explained. For equally obscure reasons, a group of humans from a planet called Earth have transferred into Alternia Academy, even though they only exist within this universe paradoxically.
Much like the modern day Earth child, Troll youth prefer to communicate virtually rather than bothering to talk to one another in person. Thus, while in attendance at the facility, they are likely to forego direct speech and enter into digital dialog instead. The teachers will not speak directly, but their commands will be conveyed through description as they are in Hussie’s comic. (If we break this pattern, we may do it with voice acting.)

In order to make the game well... make-able, I’ve decided to start out simple. At first you’ll only be able to play as one character (Karkat) until I figure out how to make one of these games and how to get the dynamic to work with the crazy quadrants and whatnot. Also, while I’d ultimately like to make it so that he can end up in any quadrant with every single character, in order to make it easier to program at first, I want to start out with only certain characters being able to develop a particular quadrant relationship with him. This base structure can then be expanded upon in later versions of the game.
Karkat’s Quadrants
Flushed Quadrant (matesprits)
-Terezi (duh)
-Gamzee
-Sollux
-Nepeta
Caliginous Quadrant (kismesis)
-Sollux
-Equius
-Vriska
-Terezi
Ashen Quadrant (auspistice)
-Aradia
-Kanaya
-Eridan
-Feferi
Pale Quadrant (moirallegiance)
-Tavros
-Gamzee
-Kanaya
-Sollux
Tentative System Description
So how will this work? Kismesis relationships won’t be able to work out unless there is an auspistice. There should be some sort of variable (volatility maybe?) that makes relationships more unlikely to succeed if one does not have pale quadrants since these act as stabilizing forces. Establishing pale quadrants early on will be more likely to lead to a good ending (I imagine there will be a number of bad endings where you get culled.) Moirallegiance would increase general stability but auspistices would increase stability specifically for caliginious relationships. Stability would manifest itself within the game in terms of responses that the player is allowed to choose from. The choices would then help to determine who one ends up in particular relationships with.
For each category, all characters who have the potential of taking on that particular role have a status bar. The status bar increases for that role the more you do certain actions or say things that encourage that kind of quadrant relationship between you and the other character. However, if you do something that increases the likelihood of one quadrant for a character who has the potential to be in several quadrants, then it also takes away points from the character’s status bar in the other quadrants. There should be a point past which enters into a proper quadrant relationship on the status bar, but it can still be increased to maintain stability in the relationship. Infidelity should be possible, but unlikely to destroy a well established relationship (if discovered and not mediated properly, it would take points away from the status bars of all the people you were cheating on, but if you have enough points with someone, then it probably would not ruin the relationship.) Maybe in later versions, there will also be possible career paths that you can have status bars in that would affect the kind of ending you get.
For further complexity, maybe develop it so you can actually ship other characters?
Also, this should all be visible somehow as an easter egg (like if you press Ctrl+T) but in the form of Nepeta’s shipping wall.
Why not do it like
Once you get them into a quadrant they become unlocked
And you can see the story from their point of veiw
THIS IS FUCKING MIA
Troll Calendar
1 solar sweep = 12 bilunar perigees / 729 days [790]
1 bilunar perigee = 66 days / 11 weeks
1 week = 6 days
How Bilunar Perigees Work
fuck if I know...
Days of the week (there are 6, 5 work days and one day to spend “quality time” with your lusus)
Matrigrubday
Fuschialuneday
Verdimonday
Cephalopoday
Scarlisolday
Lusiday
Are all the trolls the same age? This is a question. (MSPA wiki says probably yes.)
Game takes place over 600 days. That would be 100 weeks.
For nine bilunar perigees out of a solar sweep, it is dusk for enough of the day for there to be school sessions. The other three are too sunny and are therefore considered “vacation” months. These conveniently line-up with the American Earth school calendar (even though, of course, that planet only exists as a paradox).
Let’s see... structure of the game...
Day One - Matrigrubday
Starts out in Karkat’s room. He wakes up. It’s the first day of the last solar sweep of his general knowledge and social skill training. Upon graduation he must enter into specialized training or risk being eradicated for the crime of social uselessness (maybe he just becomes a common soldier?). As he is now approaching adulthood, there is increasing pressure for him to find a suitable matesprit and kismesis if he wants to avoid annihilation by the imperial drones. These are pretty intense times in a young troll’s life cycle.
Upon waking, he has the chance to engage in several conversations on Trollian. Some of these will be initiated by others and some he will initiate. The number he can participate in is limited because eventually, he will be summoned by his loving lusus for feeding prior to going to the academy.
After leaving the house, he may have some choice of which way to go to school and his choices may lead to encounters. People he can run into: Aradia, Tavros. In the version that contains transfer students, he should bump into John Egbert who has a piece of toast in his mouth. He is somehow enraged by this encounter. John, of course, is very friendly.ahahahahahaha
Karkat’s first class of the day is with WV (homeroom teacher equivalent). The other students in the class are: Kanaya, Feferi, Gamzee, Eridan, Vriska, Sollux, and a bunch of other nameless trolls. Class consists of playing out roles as a variety of city officials in WV’s fictional can-based empire (Terezi needs to be in this class).
Second class: PM. This year, the student’s must go on a justice quest. Somehow, this quest involves role-playing a journey into a dark realm where they must drop a ring into a volcano. This class is blue blood central. Tavros, Vriska, Equius, Terezi, Aradia, and Nepeta. In the course of the game, other classmates will be killed/maimed (inadvertently or otherwise) by some of Karkat’s classmates. Oops.
Third Class of the day is with SS. This class is like Spy vs. Spy. Karkat is paired up with Tavros and Gamzee. He faces off against Vriska, Aradia and Kanaya. They must seek to outdo one another at wily games devised by SS. Death and maiming are, once again, unfortunate possibilities. Red and blue team or black and white team???
Final class of the day: WQ. This is an elective. Karkat is in this class with Equius, Eridan, Feferi, and Sollux. First day of class involves filling out a survey and writing an essay on why you should be leader. The survey/essay is to be peer-reviewed and you’ll need to choose who you’re going to peer-up with.
Day Two - Fuschialuneday
First class: PM
Second class: SS
Third class: HB - This class is all about health and reproduction. Classmates: Vriska, Kanaya, Tavros, Sollux, Equius, Terezi, and Nepeta
Final class: DD - Diamond Droogs teaches about forensic science. Classes will involve going on field trips to crime scenes and gathering evidence, then analyzing it to determine who is guilty. Classmates: Terezi, Nepeta, Eridan, Aradia, Feferi, and Vriska
Day Three - Verdimonday
First class: CD - Art and design. No one takes this class seriously except for Kanaya (and sometimes Feferi). Most everyone else just talks through the class, much to Clubs Deuce’s dismay. Consequently, not much actually gets done in the way of art and designing. Gamzee will occasionally do finger-paintings, despite the fact that these are never actually assigned (and he eats the paint). Terezi also draws on the chalkboard a lot (and licks the chalk), but once again, this has little to do with class assignments. Classmates: Kanaya, Gamzee, Tavros, Feferi, Aradia, and Terezi.
Second class: WQ
Third class: DD
Final class: WV
Day Four - Cephalopoday
First class: DD
Second class: HB
Third class: WQ
Final class: SS
Day Five - Scarlisolday
First class: AR - The equivalent of a gym class. Troll youth are subjected to para-military training, complete with working explosives and fire-arms! What fun! Classmates: Equius, Nepeta, Eridan, Feferi, and Gamzee
Second class: WV
Third class: PM
Final class: HB
Day Six - Lusiday
No classes.

However, I wouldn't mind particularly if you went about it another way, in order to make the game flow easier. Having the playable character act only as a mediator in that quadrant does sound like the easiest choice in terms of writing.
