The Auto-Responder referred to HAL9000 as the protagonist of the film, which it is most certainly not. Unless you like the protagonists going in with a pretty one-minded goal of KEEL EVERYBUDDY. Well, that's simplified, but you know.

He's mixing up more than one movie, so him believing that HAL is the hero might not be as troubling as it looks.

Not sure if this counts, but aside from Vriska (whose plot was built around her downfall), only the trolls who have established sylladexes are currently alive. (Probably just because they were minor characters, but I still think it's worth noting.)

Actually, this isn't true. Karkat and Sollux switched at some point during Hivebent, remember? So we no longer know what Karkat's is, and Sollux is like Vriska.

Credit goes to my dad for this one, since he was the one who pointed it out to me during his Act 1-5 reread. I would never have picked it up otherwise.

HAL9000 wanted to do his mission without human error. He had a goal and was going towards it, which is the role of the protagonist.

The astronauts try to stop him. They impede the progress of the protagonist, hence, they're antagonists.

It's very clear that the human astronauts were not only antagonists in the story telling sense, but villains of the highest order. Valuing their own lives over science. What is this, 1999? 2000? NO! It's 2001! It's the FUTURE, we should know BETTER.
