For metals, there's always sodium, for explosions, but my vote has to go to bismuth. Not only is it really cool looking,but it is also radioactive and completely harmless. (Bismuth's half-life is literally over a billion times more than the age of the universe.)

Also belemnites. Belemnites are badass.


You know what rock needs better PR? Shale. I mean, yeah, it's not so interesting to look at, but it can have fossils in it, and it split nicer than sandstone.

Also, every year I visit my grandparents in Pacific Grove, and the natural history museum there has a hunk of polished jade as big as a man that some scuba diver found in Big Sur.

Also, sometimes when things fossilize, they are replaced with opal, so you get dinosaur bones or ammonites or what have you that are literally opals. Like so:

There's a reason why hatters - who infamously worked with mercury - went absolutely insane. "Mad as a hatter" is still an expression these days!
