As for Shining Armour changing a significant part of his sister's backstory, consider this; Twilight did say he was her only real friend growing up, and it's likely that as he got older and started taking on more responsibilities he had less and less time for her. With the only real friend in her life gone (aside from Spike, I guess), she probably just didn't bother making any new ones and became more reclusive. Same deal with Candice, I guess.

a) It's unclear exactly how much time Spike and Twilight spent together pre-ep1. Word of Faust is that Celestia raised him for much of his earliest childhood and he's a fairly new acquisition (for want of a better word) of Twilight's at the beginning of the show. If you pay attention, this is actually kind of plausible; note that in Ticket Master she has to ask Spike if he's ever been to the Grand Galloping Gala before. It really doesn't look like they spent his whole life together. Unfortunately I'm not sure how to get it any more specific than that... he knows who Moondancer is (which is more than we can say!), but that could come from anywhere, especially if she's the party-throwing type.
b) I like that we're still collectively unsure how to spell the new princess's name.

No matter how much a connection you feel to the actual show, by tyrannical and illogical brony law, you are a brony if you even slightly enjoyed the show enough to continue watching it past what would be beyond the tolerance of somebody who does not have any interest in it at all, then you are a brony, regardless of how much you want to distance yourself from the stereotype of the manchild who ruins shows for little girls with obsession.

Just because Faust is no longer a part of the show doesn't mean that what she said before that is now moot. She said that thing about normal mammalian reproduction barely halfway through the series, it's still entirely canon.

If I'm reading some of the buzz correctly, all of the insane shit/negative traits that gets associated with members of other megafandoms except even worse (depending on who you ask). On the other hand, screw the haters who think every single person within any given fandom is automatically a bad person or prone to these traits (and as mentioned earlier, shit happens in every fandom and you have to take the good with the bad...even if the bad is somehow 'worse' than usual, although if MLP fandom is more extreme than other fandoms then that suggests that the next 'megafandom' to come along will be even more 'extreme' than MLP fandom and I may be either slightly exhausted or slightly drunk right now I'm sorry for the tangent).

Then you get people who feel that even watching the show as an adult is creepy and makes you creepy, and while I'll admit that watching a kid's show aimed at young girls is unusual behaviour, I should point out that watching MLP on its own is nowhere near the 'creepiest' thing a person can possibly do.

And a part of my attitude to the 'Brony' thing likely comes from a general dislike of giving 'special names' to members of a given fandom in general. 'Trekie', 'Belieber' and similar terms leave a bad taste in my mouth.

...Matter of fact, I don't think I've ever described myself as a 'Brony', even before I became aware of how some might interpret the term...huh...

(Except for that one time when I challenged Atomic to a e-duel. That was fun...)

I, personally, find names to fandoms nice, because then you can say who you are and what you like in a word or two. Saves time and energy, plus I think having a solid name to build your fandom off of is what makes people band together.

In any case, my point still stands; I don't tend to like 'specialized terminology' for fanbases and still choose not to apply the 'Brony' label to myself.

However, I will not stop anyone from identifying themselves as a 'Brony' if they so choose because this is a free country and I do agree with the teachings of John Locke to some degree.
