Okay. Rainbow Dash claimed that if they each (including Fluttershy) hit 10.0, they'd beat the record "for sure". Said record is 910. Nine Ponyville pegasi were absent that day: eight with feather flu, one with nerves. Nine times 10.0 is 90.0. Somehow, with that 90 horsepower drop they went from definitely greater than 910 to maybe not making 800.

Somepony splain. And yes, I could have done this calculation when I was the age of the target audience.

I think it might have been that some pegasi did not reach 10.0, while some of the pegasi who were out sick had Wing Powers in excess of 10.0 (which would have compensated). There were some pegasi foals in the group, I think, so that sounds plausible.

Also, not every pegasi may have been flying at their measured Wing Power, so the actual output might have been less than projected

All they needed was one more measely pegasus to help. It was pretty clear that they had topped off at 695, so had Fluttershy not helped Spitfire helping at that point wouldn't have been too big of a deal.

Okay, so the ponies just barely reached the 800 wing-power required to do the thing. How long will it be before reverse engineering can translate that into Joules? I've been trying for awhile now, but I can't find the minimum windspeed for a cyclone to actually pickup water and displace it into the Troposphere. I'm assuming Earth-like gravity and atmosphere.


On a similar note. What is wing-power based off of? I thought it was the minimum force to keep a Pegasus airborne but then Fluttershy pulled a half point. That would make sense for a kid, but there is no way she is that thin. Of course the standard could be based on someone larger, maybe a full-horse or Celestia.

To an extent, but I think there's also a bit of "let's see if Rainbow Dash is good enough to get her team to do this." That position on the Wonderbolts is still Rainbow Dash's to win, and Spitfire's testing her to see if she's got it what it takes. Another team of pegasi from somewhere else could always be called in, even on relatively short notice, to handle the problem of actually getting the water into Cloudsdale, but first, Rainbow Dash is getting tested. Is she enough of a team player to inspire the help of one of her best friends?

Really, there's a whole Rainbow Dash storyline in this episode that gets somewhat obscured by the focus on Fluttershy's. She spends the episode torn between the two impulses of breaking a record and helping the girl she's known since childhood. You can see her switch back and forth on multiple occasions, and in the end, her overfocusing on breaking the record actually ends up coming back to haunt her when it turns out Thunderlane really was sick all along. The weird part is, we don't quite get to see her reaction to this discovery, and it's Twilight, not Rainbow Dash, who tells Fluttershy to finish the tornado for herself. She does call her Fluttershy her best flier, but I'm still not sure that's quite a resolution to her own arc.

I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure that in animated shows whenever large text shows up in the background or any area where the viewer's attention isn't supposed to be directed at, they'll put some random nonsense words there. Apparently it has something to do with not distracting the viewer? I'm not sure. Anyway, what I'm saying is that there may not even be a translation.

Twilight implies that wing power is a measure of a Pegasus' ability to lift water into the sky, so it might have something to do with the amount of "pull" a Pegasus needs to generate to move x amount of water.

I thought it pretty much meansured the wind speed that is generated when a pegasi moves then converts that into wing power. Its the same idea in my mind of making a giant whirlpool whith a bunch of people in a pool. Instead of water though its the air.

You know, it is rare that I have a favorite split second of episode though. But this week I did.
Remember when Rainbow Dash was trying to recruit Fluttershy? And Fluttershy was being herself? And then Rainbow grabs Gluttershy by the shoulders and starts going off, "Suck it up..." THAT. That moment right after that. The deep breathe, the starting a sentence over. That moment right there is something you never see in cartoons, and that is why I love this show.

I think Flitter and Cloud Chaser and Sparkler and the two teenagers who were rude to Fluttershy in Putting Your Hoof Down should all hang out. I like thinking of them all as roughly the same age and they could have hijinx.

Or maybe it's just that RD's more expressive.)
