Everything is fantastic. Everything.
Everything is fantastic. Everything.
Andrew has this really good strength for characterization, especially through dialogue. Each character seems to have their own unique dynamic or relationship with whomever they speak with and it can be viewed very well through the dialogue. I think this shines especially during the Act 6 Act1 intermission.
For me, first and foremost, it has to be the plot. I like my fantasy/sci-fi with a good helping of 'epic' and Homestuck gives me that in spades (if you'll excuse the pun). I think AH is a master of storytelling, despite having repeatedly said that he 'writes by the seat of his pants' and makes up all the connections as he goes, he manages to create an almost perfect illusion of there being a cohesive 'master plan' behind everything.
Everyone says this, but the '[S]' panels are a big draw for me, In my opinion '[S] Cascade' made the whole comic worthwhile, all of the 5000 or so pages leading up those 15 minutes of epicness and the "Holy S***! that was the most amazing thing i've ever seen" moment after seeing it for the first time were totally worth it, not mentioning as well that the pages leading up to are full of awesome and hilarious things.
Finally the characters, or more specifically: The Trolls, I've got nothing against the kids, but the trolls are awesome, I love the interactions and dynamic between them, and all their distinct characteristics, and all the back-story behind them. Even without all the rest of HS, Just Hivebent itself would rank among my top 20 works of fiction
I like the complicated, all fitting together in complicated ways, plot.
And I like all the complicated patterns- the things matching each kid and troll, for example, and I like the interactions between things, like the first-guardian guardian, the horrorterror lusus, and the self-prototyping. And I like that the things in that pattern have much more to them than their place in that pattern.
And this isn't such a big thing, but I find it exciting each time a character previously only seen in sprite mode gets shown in hero mode, or a character previously not shown in Hussnasty mode gets shown in that.
Keeps me from dropping back down to a second grade diction/reading level.
EDIT: It also gave me something to do: http://www.mspaforums.com/showthread...an-just-a-prop (Yes I'm going to promote this to death)

Your name is ILIKEOCTOPUS, but you are usually called OCTI for short. Your hobbies include PLAYING THE VIOLIN, READING, and GETTING DISTRACTED, though you sometimes try not to do that last one. Your chumhandle is cascadeViolinist and you tend to use contractions only when you are very excited and trail off in the middle and end of sentences... but you often attempt to avoid that.
Thinking about it, Homestuck definitely offers one of the most unique experiences out there. Not in so many other works can you see the project clearly evolving and becoming something greater as it goes on. Other comics may get an art or writing upgrade, but Homestuck really just makes it work on a completely different level.
This realization came about when Dante Basco was about to hit [S] Enter yesterday night. It got me thinking about how I felt during [S] Enter--my mind was just completely blown. I'm pretty sure I said "Oh my god, what the fuck" numerous times, too, just completely in awe of what was happening before me.
And the thing is that most people wouldn't even cite [S] Enter as the best flash (though I would place it second or third). A lot of other flashes also offer the "level-up" feeling that [S] Enter gave me when I first watched it. I remember the first time I played [S] Past Karkat: Wake up I was just completely thrilled at the chance to walk around as Karkat and talk to every single one of the trolls. It was awesome. And [S] Jade: Enter? Don't even get me started on that.
But...yeah. Where was I going with this? I forget but the bottom line is Homestuck is awesome.

I agree that the best way to read Homestuck is to know as little as possible, but that's true for almost any work of fiction, and for most things that are at least kinda well-known, people will have something spoiled for them already. It sucks but it's true.
I realize that, but I'd say it's especially important for Homestuck.Especially when the first act--John fucking around in his house--is a long yell from [S] Cascade.
I also vehemently disagree with many people's approach to "Let me tell you about Homestuck", which I forgot to mention int he previous post. Oh well.

Just.. the story.. For me, it's like Harry potter, in the way i get so overalalyctic with it, i liek the take parts of the story and break them apart piece by piece.
To me Homestuck starts out real slow but grows on you. I'm one of those, "Well I've started it now may as well finish it." readers (which is why I can safely hate Twilight in full). I really didn't like the web comic in the beginning, but as it went on it just kept getting better, and I'm glad I didn't rage quit. I like that it manages to maintain the readers interest, you literally become engaged in wanting to know what happens next, the characters are actually all pretty interesting, and by the end of the day my only wish is that it was a book series so more details, characters, etc. could be expanded on. I'd really like to see back story for a lot of things in this, but hey it aint over yet so I may get those. Till Homestuck I'd never read a web comic nor knew what one was, so I think its pretty cool that this was my first. As of now I love Homestuck. It entertains every portion of my right side oriented brain.
My initial reaction:
Hmmm lets see here. Wez gotz pictures, sound, I get to read a bunch in between all this, and O.O OMG there are buttons and minigames, and movie like things!!! *drools* It haz good music too!
So yeah its a lot of fun and I'd totally recommend it to someone else.

People always seem to get at the fandom (and sometimes I can understand why) but a lot of the time I think it can be the best thing about Homestuck. There are so many talented artists and writers and animators in it as well as people who seem to make ANYTHING absolutely hilarious. It was the fandom jokes I kept seeing on tumblr that got me into Homestuck and it still never fails to amuse me.
Plus we can't forget DAT FLASH. You know the one I'm on about. [S] Cascade literally blew my fucking mind and turned me from a person who thinks homestuck is "quite cool" into a genuine fan. So yup.![]()
Yes I am Dirk Strider's butt.
Hands off.
After every few updates I get the barely suppressible urge to just post somewhere getting overenthusiastic about how this is just the best fucking thing ever.
I'm glad this thread exists because I seem to be convinced that expressing opinions on the internet is disproportionately important.
I see a lot of people complaining about the mass amount of extraneous characters and not-very-gracefully-shaped plot, but I find all of those things endearing. They're part of what makes Homestuck Homestuck.
I love the fact that I never truly felt like I needed a reason to weigh in on the Complainin' 'bout Homestuck thread. Aside from Nepeta dying, I really can't say there was something I didn't like. In the end, I can even appreciate her murder as a plot device. It was that moment when it truly hit me just how ruthless troll society was. I love how Hussie actually cares about the fandom and takes in it's jokes and theories, even if most of the time, his address of us is in good natured trolling. The fandom itself is great, most Homestuck fans I've seen are quite accepting of newer members. The storyline is epic in both literary terms and it's more modern use. Thanks to our wonderful fandom and Hussie's blessing of accepting fan characters as canon, we expanded the universe beyond the bounds of the story. Knowing that my fan troll is canon really makes me feel involved an immersed in the story, even though I know she will never be mentioned in the story. I could easily write pages upon pages for my reasons of loving homestuck. It's a mix of silliness and seiousness, all put into a fantastical coming of age, epic, heroic tale about otherwise ordinary people conquering monumental obsticles.
I've got nothing clever to say here... yet.
Avatar base came from a program by inkiw on Newgrounds, with a few edit I made in ms paint.
Ohai, haven't seen you around in a while! Or I may be confusing you with someone with the same avatar. (hint: it's hilarious)
My favorite thing about Homestuck is probably the flashes. Even though I know it is a humorous comic at the core I'm a complete epicness-addict. Which is probably the reason I also love shonen anime so much :P
I love how pretty much everything starts out as a minor occurrence, but is then shown to have major importance, and at this point is explained in greater detail. It's just masterful storytelling, and it rewards "going with the flow" and waiting for Hussie to tie up plot points. So far, he always has.
Homestuck is one of the best works of fiction I have read and it always makes me happy![]()
I'd just like to mention here that almost every day, when I'm out to school, I'm always looking forward to when I come back home not just to see my family, but also to see whether Homestuck has updated or not, and in case not to talk with all of you guys anyway.
When I'm feeling a bit down, Homestuck and its community are there to cheer me up with their sillyness and epicness.
I used to think it was crazy to become obsessed over something and/or its fandom, but I've seen the light and I like that light.
A Member of the Midnight Crew
Yeah, I used to become obsessed with certain franchises or series, but I never really cared for the fandoms. Not until Homestuck. It really is the first fandom I've actually contributed to in any significant way, and it's the first that I've ever actually written legitimate fan fiction for. Well, fan adventures, but that is still fan fiction I guess.
I've done quite a bit of franchise hopping over the the past couple of years, and I unashamedly admit that whenever I read something for the first time there's tiny little voices in the back of my head arguing about who has the most chemistry with who. And then I'll draw or write something and stick it on the internet. Some of the flaming I have gotten and seen others get because their ship is not popular is astounding. With Homestuck, the vast majority of people I've seen have been very respectful of other ships, much less hate then in other fandoms. So for me, at least, that's a huge plus.
As for the actual story, I'm continually amazed at the different ways of reading, the different depths and the links between everything. Despite everything, I have never felt the plot was out of control, but I'm still often left wondering what'll happen next. I can say nothing other than that I am in awe of Andrew Hussie's writing skills.
The best thing about Homestuck is the fandom. I mean, it has its... less than desirable parts, but everything does. For the most part, the community is very amicable and accepting, as the whole MSPA vs. Gunnerkrigg Court in the Comix Mix poll shows. It's also filled to the brim with fun, smart, and outright hilarious people. It was through Homestuck that I met my best friend, and it's thanks to the fanmade Pesterchum that we're able to keep in touch. So yeah. /probably been said before
The only complaint I have is that there isn't enough Dirk drawn porn and Hussie never showed the rest of that Pony Pals thing.
