The Next Frontier: Space Exploration

It is the year 2099, and a world-changing discovery has been made.

The secret to interstellar travel has been unlocked, in the form of Hyperspace, a separate universe that touches ours in specific places, providing a "tunnel" of sorts to different star systems. These "Hyper Nodes" have piqued great interest, and finally, the United Nations has decided to send an exploratory ship, with the mission to seek out habitable planets, and, if possible, other life and civilization among the stars.

The Sol System is connected to one other, temporarily named HN01. This system unfortunately contains no planets, but does have a node to a system of great interest to us. The next system, HN02, is nicknamed, for very obvious reasons, "The Hub".

The Hub contains a single rocky planet orbiting an unremarkable red dwarf. What's incredible is the high amount of Hyper Nodes discovered in the system. In this system, the UN established the base camp for its exploration program: Hub Station.

Hub Station is now seeking candidates for the first explorer ship, tentatively designated the UNE Goodwill, to lead our exploration further into the depths of space.

I had an urge to make a game like this, and I am following that. Let's see if I can make this work. Basically, you will be the crew of the UNE Goodwill, and will encounter various scenarios. You'll select an action, and I'll roll to determine the result. Simple, really. I encourage roleplaying, but don't feel excluded if you don't.

In my head, this is a future where biomechanical augmentation of humans exists, and is performed to some degree. However, not all people are augmented, and most can only afford one or two "upgrades". In addition, the types are still very limited, and there aren't many commercial augmentations available. If you want a character with improved eyesight, etc., please provide a source for the implant.

Name: Peter Anderson
Position: Navigator / Pilot
Bio: Many wonder why Anderson would set out on a quest for the stars, when he's perfectly well set back at home on Earth. The answer? Peter's been waiting for this kind of thing since he was a kid. Pursing a degree in areospace engineering in this course, he became enamored with the idea of becoming an astronaut, and ended up training accordingly, with experience in astrophysics, gravitational spaceflight, and theories in advanced propulsion. The last one of those went out the window when the Nodes appeared. Out of all of NASA's ready and raring spacesuited pilots, he's the one who made an innate connection with the Nodes, and he's the one to steer a ship on a course set straight for them.
Description: Peter's a rather affable guy, slow to anger and quick to accede, which is the kind of profile NASA wants representing the USA on an international effort to reach the stars. He knows more than a bit about science, and casually fits the profile of a geeky type. A silver chain with a pendant of the Tree of Life hangs on his neck under his regularly issued clothing.
Abilities: Innate knowledge of the ways of gravitation spaceflight and their effects on Node travel, and a raiper sharp wit.
Color: A simple teal will suffice for my purposes, if you would.

Name: Alexandra sian
Position on ship: Security officer
Bio: Alexandra comes from a poor family back on earth, At 18 she joined the army so she could have a better life without drugs. She was rebellious and refused to be broken from the training and was sent to even harsher training this soon she was the best but was still able to think for herself which made her a good agent. After a long career she was sent for her most important mission.
Description: Calm personality (but you dont wanna see her get angry), but can only take orders from people she really likes or she will just ignore them and do what she thinks is the best. Also she cant stand the regular issue clothing so she wears loose clothes over them
Abilities: Actual combat training (and a lot of experience), Her pretty custom made sniper rifle she calls it sage and takes good care of it

Name: Ander "Navy" Jernigan
Position on ship: First Officer. Preferably First Officer. But I guess Captain. (Or we can have a Captain Red-Shirt killed right off the bat durrhurr)
Bio: Ander had no future a few years ago, his most redeeming features was the metal in his arms and the scowl on his face. But as luck would have it, he was opted to join the Space program, which he accepted graciously. As the years passed while he ran his way up the career ladder, his intelligence and leadership qualities was noticed by higher-ups, and as such, he was sent to train for one of the most important missions in the history of mankind. Hopefully, he will lead the his crew members and the rest of humanity to a better future.
Description: Ander is a man in his late 20's that values the protection of his friends and crewmates above nothing else... unless they get in the way. His greatest flaws being his sense of authority over anyone below him, he likes to jump to the treachery card if people disagree with him, his scruffy, dirty, uncombed hair and a tall and lean build is hardly what you would call leader material, but he is a tactical genius, no-one questions his effectiveness and sheer inspirational personality. On paper, he sounds like a raving mad-man unfit for duty, in person, he's quite the opposite. Another thing however... like a regretted tattoo, he hides some augmentations in his arms and legs within the long sleeves of his shirt and trousers, although, regretted might be the wrong word, unless he suddenly wished he wasn't breathing right now.
Abilities:
Brilliance - "Navy" sees things differently, his mind works in a rapid and mysterious fashion that not even himself can begin to understand, not that he cares. Ander is a mastermind, he learns and understands things about situations, items, even other people. As such, he will learn things much faster than an average person, and even learn information that the average person might even fail to notice.
Hype-Augments - Ander can suddenly make a call to action, should it be needed. Using his augments within his arms and legs, Ander can go into Hype mode, powerfully increasing the strength, speed and reflexes in his limbs. This, combined with his brilliance, makes him a very dangerous man. Unfortunately after a couple minutes the effect tends to drain or even cripple Ander, but before then, he's been witnessed of a few incredible feats. He can disable Hyper mode before it begins to drain him, naturally.
Color: Navy, Duh.

Name: Rick Jones
Position on ship: Head Engineer
Bio:There are two reasons Rick Jones was picked for this mission. The first was that out of all the engineers they could have chosen, Rick works the best in unpredictable situations. The second was that he's too stubborn to give up on a project, no matter how doomed it seemed (or was, for that matter). In the far reaches of space where one is always in the unknown, there was no better choice.

That, and they were getting tired of dealing with him in the SOL system. Good riddance.

Name: Dimitri Zakharov
Position: Physics officer.
Bio: When pursuing a career in physics, Ivan's initial intentions were not to go to space. He specialized in particle physics, and after publishing his outstanding thesis he was hired almost immediately by a research facility situated in Antarctica designed to observe neutrino related phenomena. There he spent years of his life investigating the effects and properties of these particles, with varying degrees of success. However, upon being presented with the option to observe and measure neutrino radiation from other star systems, he didn't hesitate a second before applying for a position in the explorer ship.
Description: Ivan is a rather serious man in his late 40s, he has graying hair and walks assisted with a walking stick. He has a profound dislike for loud noises and prefers to spend time in laboratories, libraries, or other mostly silent locations. He will, however, never say no to a good game of chess, which is his favorite activity.
Abilities:
Particle detection: A "sixth sense" that allows him to sense if there are unusual readings of elementary particles in the area, which is actually thanks to a neural implant he got at the Antarctic research facility.
Instant analysis: Sees many situations as games of chess, and can estimate within seconds the most likely outcomes of the various actions he can perform, as well as evaluate the optimal course of action.

Name: Michael Zadkiel
Position on ship: Gunman
Bio: He used to serve in World War Three. He has seen many horrors and atrocities, and he has survived only by doing shameful things such as hiding and using meat shields. His superiors found out about this, and he was shamed and demoted to a lesser team. He deeply regrets what he has done, and he has resolved to give his all to protect his friends. This time around, he was capable of protecting his friends... for a short amount of time. He, however, was abducted, and his friends fought valiantly to get him back. They all died, and his higher-ups assumed that he ran away, leaving them to die. He was kicked out of the military, and he had to resort to working on an exploration vessel as a gunman. This job is a notably terrible one, because exploration vessels rarely run in enough danger to even need a gunman. However, the guns are there, and they need a gunman. So, he was chosen for the job.
Description: He is a bitter grizzled war veteran, around 40 years old, but looking 50. He has a salt and pepper beard, and long black hair. He usually wears a combat outfit, though he does so lazily, like he knows nobody gives a fuck if he wears it wrong. He knows that he is capable of so much more, but unlucky circumstances have placed him here. Consequently, he is pretty much a total asshole who just want his paycheck and to get out of here. He is bulky and heavily built, weighing in at 250 pounds, all muscle. Nevertheless, he is skilled with weapons, due to having an alarmingly precise aim. He got his brain implant during the war, when they still believed that he could be useful as a sniper. His power has stagnated since then, however, because he has not needed to use it at all.
Abilities: Superhuman Sensory Reception. For a limited time, can speed up his senses so that everything appears to slow down for him. This is aided by an implant into his brain, in the sensory receptor section. The drawback is that his body will also appear slowed down to him, so he does not have super speed. He hopes to rectify this someday, with intense exercise and muscle training.

Name: Josh Kirby
Position on ship: Medical Officer
Bio: When he was 14 years old, Josh Kirby and his family were the victims of a terrorist attack. His parents were killed, and Josh was criticality wounded. He was rushed to the nearest hospital where he fell into a coma for a year. The scans showed that a piece of shrapnel had lodged itself in his parietal lobe, and it was believed that it had been damaged resulting in his brain being unable to handle all the information from his senses, causing it to overload. He was saved by an experimental new surgery which involved repairing these damaged parts and actually integrating the shrapnel into the repairs. When he awoke, Josh decided to dedicate his life to medicine, just like the people who saved him.
25 years later, Josh had been around all over the world offering his services to war torn countries and drought ridden villages. He has learnt techniques to treat most type of wounds from broken bones to radiation poisoning. Because of this, and the fact that he had no loved ones to leave behind, he was chosen by his homeland, the UK, to go on the exploration mission as the medical officer.
Description: Josh has a small black goatee, something that gives him a bit class but is easily controllable. His hair is black but slightly greying and receding, and cut in a short simple style. His eyes are dark green. Because of the therapy he had to go through, he is quite fit for his age, but not very strong. He is usually seen wearing a lab coat and a pair of leather gloves unless he's meditating, in which case he is wearing a black martial arts uniform.
Abilities: Because of the repairs on his brain, he is able to dampen his senses and block any distractions, letting him concentrate on his work. He also has a a great medical knowledge, allowing him to treat most physical ailments.

He arrived, and almost immediately was swept up with all the scientific wonders that he lacked in the wastes, so he sent a letter home to explain he was staying. He enrolled in the College of Darwinism, and quickly took up the trade of Fabrication. Russia, however, was mainly a robotic area, despise the Darwinist creations. To make a living, Ivan had to take up a job at a local radio station, where he learned everything he needed to become a successful radio officer on a military craft. As the Land-Dreadnaught moved around Russia, Ivan saved up his wages as a soldier to catch a a ship off-world, heading to the Hub to test his wits in space.
Description: Ivan is a 23-year-old Darwinist/Military communications officer, who hasn't seen his family since he was 16. By growing up in the wastes, he learned many survival skills that would be helpfull in the event of a ship-wreck. He wears his Russian Military Officers Uniform underneath his waste-walker trench-coat, With a black ponytail reaching down to touch the collar of his coat. He has small silver pocket-watch, the chain of which is always falling out of his pocket, hanging loose.
Abilities: Fabrication: The ability to weave different materials and organisms together to Create new Items or Animals. This is due to an implant in the spine that allows him to use electrical currents to nudge together genes, or "Threads," To create eggs of a new species.
Signal: using the spinal implant, he can send an electrical jolt into any communication, temporarily boosting it's signal range.

On his fourteenth birthday however his little brother had come in contact with an unknown disease and two days later he had died.
He has since then gotten over it but devoted his life into medical studies.

His little brother was always fascinated by space to honer his brother he had signed up for the mission
it would also take him away from grass witch he is happy about.
He doesn't expect to be picked out of the many people better than him.

Bio:Not an overachiever but not an undergraduate, Regi prides on himself of common knowledge amongst professions to have somewhat of a higher understanding of that particular job than the common man. Loafed his way through the UN Space Training Program, his only placement job would be janitor which he considers "not a bad thing" since he gets to leave Earth and visit different places, even if it happens to be from the window of a restroom stall! As for your family, won't miss 'em! Because technically raise in an orphanage and as far as everyone figured you were the spawn of hell, even when you didn't do anything.

It's time.

December 31, 2099. 11:57 PM.

Over the past year, the UNE Goodwill and Hub Station have been constructed. Today, on the eve of the new year, it's finally time to start the mission.

Seven very lucky people are the center of the party. They are the selected crew of the Goodwill, and the whole Hub Station Team has gathered to wish them well. The rest of the candidates have either returned home to Sol, or have stayed on as operators at the Hub.

The first stands near the ship, with a bottle of champagne in his hand. Waiting for the New Year to christen the ship (even though the name has already been selected by the UN) is the new captain, Ander "Navy" Jernigan[Played by BlazerC]. He's young for a captain, but time and time again he has shown his leadership skills, especially during a mission against the remaining Jovian Rebels, who were hiding within the asteroid belt.

Two more stand off to one side, speaking enthusiastically in their native Russian. They are Dimitri Zakharov[Played by InoxFy] and Ivan Schishlov[Played by AnInvisibleUser], the Goodwill's Science and Communications officers respectively. They are eager to test out the labs, as Mr. Schishlov is by trade a biologist, which of course helps in communicating with alien life forms. The older Dr. Zakharov has the lion's share of the laboratory, but he's not against sharing it with his countryman.

Fawning over the ship's engines is a young man in a flight suit, with several patches from different NASA squadrons. His name is Peter Anderson[Played by Ross_Varn], and his uncanny ability to locate and traverse the Nodes has earned him the position of Navigator.

Surveying him, and making sure nothing is damaged is probably the most mysterious figure of the bunch. He wears a full-body exosuit, and carries a toolbox wherever he goes. This is of course Rick Jones[Played by MasterBlade], the ship's Engineer. Hopefully, nothing will break down on his watch, and nothing will explode because of his tinkering.

The last two are waiting with champagne glasses in hand. They're probably the oldest of the group, and their experience and wisdom will hopefully counteract the youthful enthusiasm of the Captain, Navigator, and Communications Officer. The first is Michael Zadkiel[Played by ~ATH], whose hand periodically twitches. He's the oldest and most experienced of the group, as well as the only professional ground soldier. He's the Goodwill's Security Officer and Gunman, making sure that the crew is safe. The other is probably the most essential crewman, Dr. Josh Kirby[Played by GreenCloverGuy], the ship's esteemed Medical Officer.

The clock nears midnight. The countdown begins.

The group busts into cheers as Captain Jernigan breaks the champagne bottle on the Goodwill, and then starts filling glasses. The ship will depart in the morning, but all the people can focus on now is the party.

The crew boards the ship, with a mix of emotions over the mission. Some have light headaches from the last night's party, but everyone is serious.

They convene on the bridge, where the Captain activates the ship's main computer.

"Hello. I am the ship's AI. My designation is *Miranda. The Goodwill will be ready to depart in a few hours. All sub-routines are being checked.

If there is any information needed by the crew, please ask. I shall search my databanks to find a relevant entry.
