COMPLAININ 'BOUT HOMESTUCK ( tUMUt )

    First Thread

In this world, nothing is perfect. It has long since been proven that there is no work that could possibly please everyone has to have a gripe with something.
Obviously, a loose and on-going story such as Homestuck has such gripes.
    This thread is for them.
From your little tiny issues to larger and larger, up to the girth of Vriska or Feferi, there is no complaint that you can not vent (under reasonable limits that follow the rules)

Do you hate what Gamzee has done to your Juggallo culture?
Do you feel that Vriska should have had four iris' on each eye?
Are you just sick and tired of all of these kids getting in your troll romance?

Then please, sit down, and tell us, but don't be surprised if someone pops up with a differing opinion (but please try to realize that some people will not change their minds, don't go on and on for pages arguing, that solves nothing and if it gets heated to the point of attack it could lead to infractions).

Just keep one thing in mind...

MSPA being slow is what made it fun. It was fucking hilarious to have the DMK fight last six god damn months. Now Hussie is just hurrying the rest of Homestuck along, which is fine by me. I'm only sticking around to see how it ends! This entire adventure bores me to no end now. Hopefully Hussie closes the coffin fast and starts a new adventure without all these cardboard cutout characters!

The thing that bugs me is that Dirk seems so...overpowered. I mean, he's extremely smart, everybody seems to love him, he's got a ton of money, he can control his dream self AND his regular self at the same time...maybe it's just because I hate characters who always get so "powerful". Vriska, being able to fight Jack Noir on equal ground in her God Tier mode, when nobody else besides Jade could, and Jade herself, because...do I have to explain?

    Maybe it's just me.

That's sorta why I like Dirk.

Granted, it's more in a "He is going to show up Dave in so many ways and make Dave feel terrible eeeeeeee" way.

Vriska's overpoweredness felt like catering to her fans. It was all "Yeah she could have actually beaten Jack! Wow! Look at how cool and badass and strong she could have been! But don't worry Terezi fucked up and killed her that's not going to be a problem."

Although the appeal of an underdog is nice too. I was getting into Dave's own quest for glory, interested in how he'd do it without God Powers until the answer became "get God Powers."

Jade hasn't been significantly traumatized for some reason, all my favorite pairings are unlikely to have more than flirttease, and Jane has no idea that there's something other than homosexuality and heterosexuality.
Those are my three biggest gripes. Well mostly the first and the last one.

I think Jane's logic for that last one would have been "If he liked both, wouldn't he have posters of both on his wall?" He only had girls, so he thought he only liked girls. And that's a reasonable assumption to make about someone in human society at this point in time.

I think she knows bisexuality exists. Just didn't think Jake was one.

EDIT: Bonus complaint: There's nothing good to argue about with the Alpha kids but sexualities. That's boooooooooring!

You mean between the death of her grandpa, the horrorterror'd dream and the fact that she keeps seeing dead bodies everywhere?

That's enough trauma for one lifetime, she just learned to soldier on past all that shit.

But just like in real life, the more opportunities you have, the more responsibility.
It's not necessarily a good thing, and he doesn't have it any easier.

In real life, there are people who have more than others!
And for all the options those people have, there are unfortunately only two available to them.
Either, they become a detriment to society, and waste their resources,
or they kill themselves trying to use every last one.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of ____ character HAS to be an emotional wreck because of X, Y, Z when there's honestly enough angst and sadness all around.

I like John and Jade because of their unending optimisticness

I dunno, I think the standards are higher here because there are so many powerful characters in Homestuck, including the antagonists. And because it's (deliberately I think) made pretty unclear how everyone's weird powers stack up to each other. If everyone is special, no one is.

I personally just don't like Dirk because I don't think he's funny. At all. Which is pretty bad for a guy whose schtick seems to be having this amazing ironic sense of humor. It seemed like Bro was originally set up as a guy with a more natural, less self-conscious version of Dave's sense of humor, yet Dirk just comes off as self-serious and pedantic and unfunny to me. (Can you imagine Dave delivering a long, serious lecture on what irony is?)

The only new kid I am really fond of at the moment is Roxy.

Yeah, the glasses are way more funny than Dirk.
Maybe that means I have a 13 year old's sense of humor.

I would say "relax, I think Andrew is actually going somewhere with Dirk's exceptional abilities, something is probably going to happen to negate them and keep everything within a certain relative perspective" but there's no need to say that, since we've technically already seen him not only defeated but utterly slaughtered.

I think that Bro being portrayed as badass untouchable superguardian extraordinaire only served to make his sudden and immediate death have a greater impact, emphasizing the power gap and just how much trouble everyone was in.

It only seems natural to see Dirk continue to casually exhibit his seemingly unrivalled level of skill. It's only really being played for mild comedic effect at this point, and we can hardly call his power cheap when we've already seen that it doesn't quite make the cut in the grand scheme of things.

And uh, I'm not saying Bro is necessarily future Dirk, specifically, but they are essentially the same "untouchable badass" character template, just like all the different Jacks share the same character template. The post-scratch untouchable badass character template is no more cheap or broken than his pre-scratch incarnation, at least not yet. We have yet to see whether he gets that tiger or not.

Sollux bugs me. Goddamn he is just such a fucking Gary Stu. Derse dreamer AND Prospit dreamer, he's died and come back like 89 times, he gets all the bitches, AND he's an electric type pokemon who can use his eyebeams both as a weapon AND to lift crap. At first I thought Hussie had to be a Gemini and Sollux was a self-insert Sue. Imagine my surprise when I find out he's not a Gemini.

Sollux has always had this 'bifurcation' theme going along with him.

He's either halfway there or double the fun.

Although Dorian Gray (not appearing in this webcomic) is a better 'split character' than he is, perhaps.

Wow, isn't that strange, it's like you haven't even looked at Sollux's personality AT ALL. Isn't that weird.

Also, there are other people who have died multiple times. Sollux hasn't really died any more than other people. His realself and one dreamself, along with his other dreamself later when he pushed the meteor too hard. There are other people who have died multiple times.

Have you noticed how Sollux's telekinesis puts a strain on him physically? Yeah, I think it's quite obvious that his powers come with side-effects. He can't use them all the time.

But really, consider his personality. He's constantly self-doubting. While he can step up sometimes, he doesn't simply save the day when there's a problem. In fact, he's never directly solved a problem that the entire team has faced. Or even a problem that he himself has faced. He lost his fight with Eridan and so Feferi died. He was asleep for most of the session. He died before he even entered the medium. These are all things that probably wouldn't happen to Gary Stu's. Thanks, over.

Re: COMPLAININ 'BOUT HOMESTUCK (Gripes in the Pipe)

I'm not sure I agree about Sollux's powers/characteristics (since I think so many HS characters have fancy special abilities that none of them are really that special). But I do find it kind of odd how romantically successful he is (by HS standards) given that, from most of what we see, he's just this whiny and perpetually disgruntled dude. He's definitely not the most charismatic of HS characters.

    . . . maybe he's just really hot from a troll perspective?

Edit: This should be obvious, but by "successful" I mean that he has had multiple seemingly happy relationships. That those relationships ended tragically is a distinct issue (since the tragedy had nothing to do with the relationship itself).

Maybe the trolls take the whole "I can fix him" thing that human girls have and escalate it to the point of ridiculousness?

  23. #23

Re: COMPLAININ 'BOUT HOMESTUCK (Gripes in the Pipe)

I don't know, he's not THAT romantically successful. Aradia and Fef were into him but we don't have a totally clear point on either quadrant. Either way, I think thats only around two other trolls (fancy that).

At any rate, it should always be important to remember that a Mary/Gary S(t)ue doesn't always mean a character you dislike.

Re: COMPLAININ 'BOUT HOMESTUCK (Gripes in the Pipe)

Sollux has the distinction of being the most important character who is also not important.

I mean he put the kids and trolls into contact, made the fucking game, had those visions on prospit that apparently were extremely relevant to their session, was one of maybe three people Karkat could stand and called friend with no fucking around, got their meteor to the sun, etc.

Yet he is still a second tier character at best. It really is quite amazing.

Also I wouldn't say he failed a lot, though he certainly thinks he does. He just seems to be really self-sacrificing. Hell the only reason he made the game is because he thought it would save their race at the cost of killing the players and he had already seen their deaths.

He is one of the few characters who can be said to be heroic the majority of his time on screen.

Dangit kA you just reminded me of one of the reasons I disliked Feferi. Specifically it's because AFAWK she's a slacker, and as a slacker myself I hate seeing it in fiction unless the character is used well.
