I spilled a cup of OJ onto my keyboard. Then I cleaned it. I think we should all take the next 24 hours years to clean our keyboards. Feel free to take before and after pictures.
Tools of the job:
Pistachio Shells (cracked) - Good for getting the grime from between the keys.
Compressed air can - Also good for getting stuff between keys.
(car) keys - Great for getting stuff between keys
Lightly damped cloth - Good for rubbing keys
Q tips
THINGS NOT TO USE
Dish soap - Terrible idea. your keyboard will get sticky and will smell like fruit
Fingers- Your fingers will get all icky

I used to take my laptop to the repair shop here to have my keyboard cleaned for practically nothing because the people there know my uncle.
But I haven't done it in so long that it would be embarrassing for them to see what's become of it.

I have a horrible feeling that if I turn my keyboard upside-down, a whole lot of horrible stuff is going to fall out.

Oh man, I now know what was under my keys.
There was a lot of hair.
And toast crumbs.
And hair. I did not know I shed that much.
I have a couple little hookie things for putting in hair extensions, and took one of those to gently pull the crap out from under them, then used a handheld vacuum to suck out the loose bits.

yeah its always weird whenever i clean my dirty desk the disproportionate amount of hair i can find. i dont even know where it all comes from
as for keyboards... man i need to do that soon. i think it might be possible to just take the key covers off without damaging them since ive done that accidentally before. but i dunno how to do it on purpose

Some of my keys just plain quit working on me (Not getting pressed down)
So I pulled off all the keys.
It was one of the most disgusting things I have ever cleaned out.
And I'm a professional cleaner.

I'll probably clean it sometime soon with acetone. Yes, I know that'll destroy the keys. Given how horrible my keyboard is, I wouldn't mind at all if I had to get a now one.

At my school, they constantly spray and rub down the keyboards lightly and it actually seems to do a pretty good job of keeping them clean all the time despite everyone and their grubby selves touching them all the time.

I actually just dug up a bendy keyboard that is apparently spill-safe (I think I bought this a few years ago). Needless to say, I am going to start using that one instead.

I still have a ball mouse, so occasionally I have to de gunk the spinners. I don't clean the actual mouse that much though.
