i'm sure there's rifle gun-fu somewhere if he needs decent melee options to base off of, although he's more the "continuous sustained fire until it dies" kinda guy (i'd assume). another thing would be to make him less fragile to compensate for the need to go into melee.
if meter gain is increased per-person he wouldn't need to be in close range for too long, as well as the fact that with grabs and dodging, you could feasibly have him in close range for decent amounts of time without the fragility playing much of a role. though, that'd lead to eridan players needing to draw out their grabs for the maximum duration before inputting the direction for it.
you could have some moves have a roll/step-in (or -out) to help in getting to and from skirmishes as well.
We've had absolutely no evidence that Eridan would be ANY degree of a close-range fighter, either through seeing how he fights OR how he acts. (Like, we technically haven't really seen Karkat fight much, but we kinda just guessed "angry rushdown" based on his personality) It just seems the most logical to make him a complete long-range coward, and any method of encouraging him to get in close rubs against that, because it implies that he actually WANTS to get closer to threats and danger. Which he wouldn't, because he's a pussy who can only act tough behind a powerful weapon. Or maybe I'm just headcanoning that. Still, I'd kinda like to see some counter evidence besides "oh FOREVER ALONE is funny."
Some kind of invulnerable combat roll might be good for him though, I'll agree with that.

Not that it wouldn't be a little grating to strictly short-range characters, but that's just how the character archetypes tend to work out in fighting games. Zoners are the paper to the rock of Grapplers and (to a degree) Rushdown.
So basically he'd need plenty of long-range attacks (which he'd certainly have, between the gun(s) and the wand), but they'd need to be designed so he has to use them intelligently to really keep people away.
Honestly guys, we already have a hardcore long/close range hybrid character, and it's Rose. Not that she should necessarily be the only one, but Eridan seems like the wrong character to hoist that character type upon.
WooHoo! Off topic thread. I wanted so bad to join into the other thread, but I didn't have anything to contribute.
I have to say, I'm extremely excited for this. -does a happy dance- I'm ready to join this party!
Well, as far as Eridan being a long-range character, who else would be a suitable long-range character? To balence things out-ish.
Also, I have a silly idea. For Terezi to use a rope (like a noose) as a kind of grab-onto-people thing. Like Scorpion from MK? Silly idea is silly.
AS A WARNING!: My internet fluctuates. I may disappear randomly.
Here's one thing I want to address before I take a break from paying attention to Homestrife for a while: Equius's playstyle.
I've noticed that some people have referred to Equius being a grappler, an assumption presumably made because he's the biggest guy, and the biggest guy tends to be your archetypical grappler (Zangief, Potemkin, Tager, etc). However, there is nothing in-universe to support that he would fight this way. Quite the opposite in fact: His fighting style is to punch you until you explode. I imagine him being like Captain Falcon: Hard hitting, fast moving, but with significant startup times on his most powerful moves.
I personally don't thing grappling-based gameplay has any place in a Smash Bros.-based game. The goal in Smash is to knock your opponent as far out as you can, not to bring them close in. Of course, I can't tell how much this game is actually based around Smash Bros. Is ring-out-based gameplay a focus? If not, sure, put in a grappler.
And if you are married to the idea of a grappler, why not Aradia or Sollux? They could use their telekinesis to grapple, like Mewtwo but hopefully not crappy.

Aradia as a grappler has already been suggested and mostly accepted in the memo. A nice suggestion was to have ranged grapples.
The game will focus in actual fighting rather than making ring-outs. Stages like Equius' Robot Cage won't even have ring-out areas. Will be more like a fighting game, but things like platforms, ring-out areas, more than 2 players, all those kind of things are what you'd expect to see in it.

Actually, when we were talking about it in the memo, we came to similar conclusions. While he will have one command grab (because to me the idea of grabbing somebody by the arm and clubbing somebody else with them, or turning them into a flailing projectile is hilarious. It wouldn't be some fancy piledriver or anything, though), he's not going to be a grappler or "mighty glacier" by any stretch. He'll be able to run at at least a moderate speed, will be able to jump to ridiculous heights, and will - indeed - spend most of his time just trying to punch the shit out of people, in some cases with full-blown super armor like Hulk from MvC3 so he can just power throw other people's attacks. Not only will his hits do good damage, but will probably also have some of the biggest knockback of any character. If anybody's most likely to win by ringouts it's Equius. His one major drawback, though, would be the fact that his range is godawful, since he doesn't have projectiles or even weapons to extend it. Well, outside of the aforementioned command grab.
Oh and to answer your question: you can win through ringouts or more traditional-style KOs, since everybody has health bars in this game. How much you'll be able to ring people out relies on a combination of the stage design and the character you pick, so there isn't a particular focus on one or the other. Not that using somebody like Equius in a fully enclosed stage would be a bad thing, since he'd just use the enclosure to play pinball with your body.
Also we were vaguely talking about Aradia a bit. She'd probably have telekinetic ranged (unblockable!) grabs. Though it wouldn't be a straight-line projectile attack as much as it would be focused on a "point" some distance from her, kinda like a couple of Roses moves. Plus the startup wouldn't necessarily be instant. She'd be interesting, that's for sure.

you've got a point that he doesn't seem the type for close-range combat at all.

alright then.
on a different note: I was thinking about him (eridan) being able to hold some of his projectile attacks--the gun ones/a gun one, specifically--for a longer duration, probably at the cost of meter. I'm not talking the five minutes of sustained fire from the series, but maybe up to a second or two extra.

It would be possible to give him a long duration, weak attack, as well as a short but powerful burst with charging capabilities.
This is incredibly off-topic, but as soon as I get the full game, I'm going to play a 4 player Equius match in the robo-cage, with gimmicks off, and have everyone agree to only use STRONG-punches.
Also, we should have one character that is harder than the others for the physics engine to figure out, like Ice-climbers, so when you play with four players as that character on the SBaHJ stage, the game crashes.

I was thinking about how Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff could be a playable character together, like the Ice Climbers. But deliberately working in a crash, even for the sake of a joke, is awful and you should OH WHO AM I KIDDING THATS GENIUS.
I've just joined Pesterchum as unhealthyIncendiary!
I came up with an extensive list of ideas for Sollux's moveset. Basically a mid-long range kick based fighter (a la Cyclops) and a lower health bar. Because no one wants him to be overpowered.
Zone and burst attacks were suggested and generally accepted in the memos. Optic blasts only seemed like a really boring idea.

Okay since I lack the ability to say this I was thinking Sollux should fight somewhat in a somwhat similar manner to Lucas and Ness from SSB? IE Psi Attacks with some extra range, varying startups and fairly high knockback. Squishy.

Should we save deciding what our favorite move is until after we write the moves? Like, if we wind up giving Kanaya (or another character) a totally awesome hilarious move that makes everybody feel all warm and fuzzy inside, we'll do that.
L - Kiick (Basic kick, knee height, basic combos can be used with this)
Right + L - Miighty Punch (Not a very strong punch at all, but it can stun the enemy for a short time)
Up + L - Hiigh Kiick (A kick to the chompers, uppercut, knock, good way to start air combos) [Dash Cancel]
Down + L - Sweep Kiick (Makes enemy go airborne, good way to start air combos)
Dash + L - Barge (Simple barge, possibility to make enemy fall?)
Air + L - Miind Bla2t (A burst of psionic energy flares around Sollux doesn't hurt much, but keeps air combos flowing.)
Air + Right + L - Jump Kiick (Straightforward jumping kick. Hits grounded enemies at about eye level)
Air + Up + L - P2iioniic 2piike (Upward psionic "blade" motion)
Air + Down + L - Beat Down (Both hands pummel downwards, knocking enemy downwards)
Air + Left + L - Fliippy Kiick (Turns and kicks in the air)
H - P2iioniic 2la2h (Downwards psionic tentacles)
Right + H - P2iioniic Beam (Intertwining pscionic energy beam) [Unblockable]
Up + H - P2iioniic Hooks (Tentacles stab upward violently)
Down + H - P2iioniic Sweep (Tentacles sweep the enemy's feet)
Dash + H - P2iioniic Barge (Basically the barge, but with psionic energy surrounding Sollux)
Air + H - P2iioniic Explosiion (Stronger version of Miind Bla2t)
Air + Right + H - Miind Beam (Air version of P2iioniic Beam) [unblockable]
Air + Up + H - Miind Bloom (An inwards cone of psionic energy strikes the area above Sollux, best if used at the end of an air combo)
Air + Down + H - Psiionic Smash (Both feet point downward, essentially a psionic foot smash)
Air + Left + H - Kickdown (Midair backflip to undercut enemy)
Ledge L - Headbutt towards "crotch" region of enemy.
Ledge H - Psionic roll, almost like Sonic the Hedgehog.
Grab - Psionic tentacles grab the enemy.
Forward Throw - Blasts the enemy further than standard throws, open to P2iioniic Beam.
Backward Throw - Turns around and sends enemy flying into the ceiling.
