The best way to do Flash updates in Forum Adventures?

    Hey fellas.

I was wondering what would be the best way to approach a Flash update for a forum adventure?

Obviously it would be hosted off-site, but where would be a good place to host it? I mostly want it to be aligned in the center.

    Thanks in advance.

I use Truploader. That aligns it in the center.

You can make it into a youtube video and then embed the youtube.

    Code:
[youtube]code of the youtube video (meaning not the complete url[/youtub e]

I'll probably go with Truploader, thank you!

Dropbox is a good alternative too, seeing how the public links have structure and you can host every single file on there. And seriously, it's a little hard to fill 2.5 gigs.

Hey! Sorry to invade the discussion out of nowhere but I'm currently trying to figure out a solution to actually getting the SWFs to show up in forum posts. The forums don't seem to support the display of Flash files (e.g., I am trying to replace my 2-4MB GIGANTIC ANIMATED GIF files with 200-ish KB SWF files) but if you've figured something out could you let me in on it? :O The best I can seem to do right now is just show a link to the SWF file and that kinda breaks the flow of the reading.

It is either have a link with an image that tells you to click it or make a Youtube Video

... Are you inlining these gifs? We actually do have a rule about monstrous image files, because they can cause browser crashes, but I'm not sure it's made it's way into the rules sticky.

It's ok for now but please make sure you put a clear message in the thread title warning other forumers. We'll work out a coherent forum wide policy soon enough.

That's good to hear, as I use Dropbox to host normal pages.

Put the .swf on dropbox and make a html wrapper for it, so you get the resolution you want and you can position it.

To be clear, it's in the Art Forum rules but not the board-wide version.

This is probably the best suggestion: use either Dropbox or Ubuntu One (or another cloud, but I don't think the other clouds support file sharing as well as those 2). You can even upload a basic HTML file with an embed tag including the flash animation, so it's aligned and sized just the way you want. If you use both services, you get 5 GB free from Ubuntu One and 2.5 GB free from Dropbox, and it will take quite a bit to fill up 7.5 GB.

Not to mention on Dropbox you can get bonus space by referring someone, or just by being referred by someone. Anyone who wants to sign up with the referral bonus can PM me if they like!

Re: The best way to do Flash updates in Forum Adventures?

What I did was made a Zetaboards and made a custom theme that was entirely white, that's the only one unregistered viewers can see.
All I do to host a flash is log in, reply to the topic I made for flashes and embed the flash in there, since Zeta lets you do that. It also has a function to link to a specific post in a topic.

I did this because I'm crazy and hate backgrounds on my flash pages (like on frogbag, another alternative)

To get the flash update, I just post this image:

If anyone wants to use the board for the hosting (since the theme work is all done, etc) I can post a link to the sign up page, and then you can change the theme so you can actually SEE the board.
Beware of entering the topic I set up though, it's got at least 2 autoplaying flashes in it, both with music. It's going to get more and more clusterfuck-y as time goes on.

Re: The best way to do Flash updates in Forum Adventures?

It's not that I use it to upload the animation, it's that I'm crazy anal about having no background to them, and linking directly to the .swf causes oddities.

If you were to open up any MSPA flash animation in your web browser of choice, it'd be out of proportion, and if he didn't use a frame around it, there'd be things outside the main animation window.

It's just so that I get a nicely proportioned flash without any sort of background behind it.

Did I mention I'm crazy anal about things?

Re: The best way to do Flash updates in Forum Adventures?

Well, that could be done with 1 html file in dropbox linking to the flash.

Like I said, put the .swf on the dropbox and then have a .html that just has an <iframe> with your desired size linking straight to "flash.swf".

Like this. With a .swf instead of a .png, of course.

Once I finally get my next fan-venture up and running, I plan to simply embed the flash file on mspafa. Since it's a sburbventure that pretty much works out great for me.

According to the editor's help on there, you can only link to it externally with an image.

Re: The best way to do Flash updates in Forum Adventures?

Nix said that the capability for embedding it with html in the pre-image text slot is there, he just feels that doing it that way isn't in the spirit of the way fanventures are done (i.e. the linking images etc).

At least that's how I recall it.

EDIT: And it does. Embed code's got a whole lot of necessary qualifiers though.
