Liz: Check the charming fella menu out.
Well you still can't make heads or tails of the Deck screen, as it appears empty. You decide to head over to the Lore screen in order to get a better idea of some things.
First things first, let's see... yep, it has an entry on the Deck.
"A marvelous method of carrying various Cards of any type, without weighing you down! Gain levels to increase the amount of Cards you can carry."
Another look through the Lore page reveals that Cards come in four varieties, though it only goes into description of two:
"Object Cards are the various items and pieces of equipment that you will find during your adventure, from your trusty weapon to a mysterious magical jewel. They are denoted by a tan border and back, and any that fall under weapon or apparel can be equiped by being placed in the Body section of your Hand."
"Concept Cards are various skills and abilities(collectively referred to as Concepts) that may come in useful during your adventure. They are denoted by a blue border and back, and can be placed into the Mind section of the Hand. But be careful, because if you choose to take a Concept card out of your hand, it is Discarded and lost!
*Protip: Keeping an empty slot in your Mind is not necessarily a bad idea. You never know what sort of Concept might find its way in there in a pinch!"
You browse through various other entries, noting what seems to be important information.
Multiple Objects: "If two or more objects are part of some sort of set or collection, it may be possible to store them in a single Object Card. An example of this are Outfits."
Outfits: "A set of Apparel contained within a single Object Card. While any combination of clothes can be put together to form an outfit, a matching set may produce an Outfit Bonus. Go put an Outfit together to turn some heads!"
You think the menu just might be flirting with you.
Charm Attacks: "A category of attacks that use wit, charm, and perhaps even seduction to affect an enemy's mind, hindering it or even, at high levels, causing it to help you! With a stunning smile like yours, anybody could be made a friend!"
Yeah, the menu is totally flirting with you. You are mentally scribbling down notes for your latest piece of fanfiction.
After a while, you decide it might be prudent to move on, and search for a way to close the menu. You discover the 'x' in the upper right hand corner, and with a small amount of regret reach to press it, but as your hand nearly touches the screen, a text window opens.

You are now Kaylyn Antwiller, and you are currently dividing your attention between 1) a game that has apparently kidnapped your friend and 2) your boyfriend who is dangerously close to hyperventilating.
CS: "||=0 This just isn't possible."
CD: "Juuuust keep breathing, daaarling."
CS: "||=0 This has to be some kind of joke."
He's been going on like that for about five minutes now. You turn your attention away from him for a moment and focus on the screen in front of you. It is currently black, save for the chatbox that is open near the bottom of the screen and the text reading Player 1 through 3 underneath it. Player 1 and 2 have a point of light next to the text (green and blue, respectively), while Player 3 (yourself) has none, apparently indicating you have not begun properly playing the game.
Since you've already checked out Chat, and you have no intention of entering the game unless strictly necessary, you decide to check Options.
Three selectable options appear: Screen Options, Chat Options, and Back.

> Screen options; that might let you see what is going on.
>Kaylyn: Check screen options.
You decide to go investigate what options are available for the screen. If nothing else, it might give you something to look at other than endless black.
Several choices come up. Currently selected is "Blank", unsurprisingly. There are various screensaver-esque options as well, which you look at for a moment. Then the last three options catch your eye: "Player 1 camera", "Player 2 camera", and "Map".
Selecting the second, the screen is immediately filled with the picture of Liz in a dark, stony area, her umbrella raised to defend herself if necessary, and some sort of menu following behind her. Well, at least you can keep an eye on her, if not figure out where she is. Behind you, Henrick groans, presented with more proof that this is not some elaborate trick. You fiddle with one of the control sticks, and the camera angle changes slightly. After a little experimentation, you find that you can move the camera quite easily; however, many areas are blacked out to you. In fact, most of the areas that you can see are either behind Liz or directly in front of her. You guess that the game only allows you to see what the players have or are currently seeing.
After a while of watching, you decide that Liz seems to be relatively safe, so you decide to check on Chester.
You then choose the first option, and the image of Liz wandering about is replaced with that of Chester, clingling to a rock wall.
Chatlog:
You switch the screen to the last option, "Map". It returns to being almost blank, except for a rhythmic pulse of green reminiscent of some sort of radar, and two colored points: one green indicating player one, and the other blue indicating player two.

have one person act as some kind of helper by having a camera and map doesnt really sound that useful (yet)
> Switch to Chester
>Kaylyn: Try the chat options.
You switch back to Chester's camera because the stupid map/radar thing was getting on your nerves, and Liz seems to be fine. Besides, it's a little funny watching the guy squirm up there like that.
You click on the chat options and find the same set of options that you could reach through the chat window: change you text color(which you've already done), read chatlogs, and set privacy settings. The last one intrigued you, but upon selection there was only one option so you decided to leave that be.
There is a sound from upstairs, like something crashing to the floor. What are the adults up there up to?
"Henry, deeear, could yooou..."
You take one look at your boyfriend and decide to revise your request.
"Henry, take the controller for a second, I'm going to see what that was."
You put the controller in his hands, sit him up to face the screen, and set off upstairs.

You are now Henrick Smith, and you are currently watching your friend that is trapped in a video game climb a cliff.
This is impossible, of course.
Your mind is still trying to find a way to explain what is going on. While you have mostly come to the obvious, if crazy, conclusion, part of you is still trying to convince the rest that this is all some elaborate prank.
You are currently holding a controller that may or may not give you some amount of control on the world your friend finds himself in. What are you going to do?
>Henrick: Up up down down left right left right B A Start
Hey, if there was any time for the Konami Code, now would be it. It would also be great to find out it did something wonderful, like transport your friends back home.
No such luck. Well, something did occur once you pressed Start. A popup appeared stating: "Player 3 attempting to enter... Player 3 not detected. Please try again."
Hm. Odd.
You guess you're just going to have to keep an eye on Chester for now.

You've been here for fifteen minutes, you say? Well rock climbing is very tiring. You needed a long break.
You are most certainly not staying as still as possible because you are frightened in any way. No sir, nerves of steel here. You are now Lindsay, and you are currently sitting in the back seat of a police car because you assaulted a police officer. Needless to say, this has not been a good morning for you.
You lean your head back against the seat and close your eyes, letting the patter of the rain on the car calm you, and run through it again. You went upstairs to get the others, and when you came down, Chester was gone. He was hurt, and there was only one exit to the room, he couldn't have gone far. And yet despite scouring the house, you could find no trace of him. You had to just stand there as the ambulance pulled up, as Chester's dad explained to the paramedics what had happened, as they pulled away with an empty vehicle. And then this cop shows up and starts asking stupid questions and you could be using this time to look for Ches and...
You kind of black out at this point. You guess that the idea that one of your friends-
No, that Chester might be in a worse situation than the one you found him in must have gotten to you. You snapped and retaliated against the only target that presented itself.
So now you're sitting here waiting to get taken to the away for a slap in the wrist while all the while Chester could be out there bleeding to death.
You open your eyes and press your forehead against the window. For the hundreth time you curse yourself for leaving Chester alone. If you hadn't gotten all emotionally screwed up and stayed with him like every first aid training told you to, this might not have happened. If only...
Movement near the house catches your eye. Through the rain, you see a small, indistinct figure shuffle around behind Chester's house.
Now what's going on?

>Be the Figure.
You are now the figure in the rain. You have been called many things, such as Moron, Idiot, and Midget, but you prefer the title CLOCKWORK DEVISER.
You are currently executing PLAN B at the target's place of residence. It involves the package that you are currently carrying, and then a lot of running away, but first and foremost it involves getting in the target's house. You contemplate briefly going in the front door, but that is too obvious. Really they've probably called the guard already, sealing all entrances from further attack. No, you're going to have to be sneaky.
You go around back sneakily. You are so consumed with sneaking, that you fail to notice the crash of a car window being broken from the inside, nor the sound of a car door opening and closing in quick succession.
You are now in the target's BACK YARD. The weather conditions do not allow you to see very much, but you can make out a few arcane devices: a long plank connected to an axle in the middle (it is too long go all the way around, perhaps it is some sort of primitive digging machine?) and a leather seat suspended from a tree by two ropes, whose purpose is a mystery you cannot fathom.
Nevermind, you have to find a way in. Since there appears to be no BACK DOOR, you decide to climb the rope-seat device (first testing to ensure that it is not some sort of trap) and look for some sort of LIGHT-PERMITTING PORTAL that you may use as an entrance.

You are once again Lindsay, and you are so going to strife this bugger...
Wow, the bugger can climb. Fast.
Okay, let's see. You could go in the front door and tell everybody that someone is trying to break in- no, you correct yourself as the figure jumps through a window with a crash, already broken in, but you're still supposed to be in the back seat of the police car. You don't think that officer would be pleased to discover you broke a window to get out.
Besides, if this jerk has anything to do with Chester's dissappearance, you want first crack at him.
[S]Everybody: Fall into place.
You climb up the tree with practiced grace; you and Chester used to clamber up here all the time. Well, you did, Chester just sat on the ground and yelled at you while you laughed at him.
Anyway...
You reach the branch from which the figure had jumped and look into the broken window. Sure enough, there he is, cautiously making his way through the attic so as not to fall between the beams. You smile as you jump in after him. So long as you can reach him, you don't feel you have to worry about that.
We cease to be Lindsay as she flies through the air, launching herself at the would be home invader. Elsewhere, Chester continues his ascent with gritted teeth, against all the protests of his aching legs and bloodied palms, while Liz approaches a circle of monolithic tombs and now empty graves. She approaches a small bonfire standing in the middle, apparently unattended. It dances wildly, throwing shadows that move as though alive. As she turns to observe, horror grows on the girl's face as she realizes that it is not the shadows that are moving...
Meanwhile, Henrick sits in the basement, once again attempting to make contact with Chester, only to be surprised by a message from a username he does not recognise.
>WELL HENRICK, HOW ARE YOU HANDLING ALL OF THIS?>
From out of the shadows, shambling figures approach Liz. Skeletal figures, skin pulled tight against bone, grasp out towards the terrified girl holding an umbrella out in front of her defensively. Meanwhile, Kaylyn finds herself upstairs, investigating the source of the crash she heard. Apparently the adults in the kitchen hadn't heard anything, so maybe it had just been her imagination.
The second Lindsay and some other person crashed through the ceiling and tumbled down the stairs, that thought vanishes.
When they reached the ground floor, Lindsay, the Deviser, and his small, mysterious package all seperate. Lindsay towards the front door, the Deviser towards the kitchen door, and the package down the stairs. Almost as quickly as they came apart, the Deviser attempts to run for the exit, but his size doesn't prevent him from being intercepted by the one armed girl. All those within the house are drawn to the ensuing scuffle, but are quickly distracted by the front door opening and the imposing figure now standing there.
The Supernal Swordsman draws his blade. The Deviser may be many things, but they are a team and he'll be damned if he lets the little bugger get himself captured.
Liz is fighting valiantly against the foes that approach from all sides, stabbing, swinging, even flapping her umbrella open and closed with some degree of success. But despite everything, she still must retreat, even though there is nowhere to go except back, towards the fire. The flames are hot against her back, and she feels that she now knows what it is like to be between a rock and a hard place.
Meanwhile, Chester would love to be between a rock and a hard place. Right now he is between a rock and open air, and that provides little comfort. Still, he climbs upward, imagining what Lindsay would think to see him doing this.
Unfortunately, Lindsay is far too distracted with the Clockwork Deviser to be thinking about much. Too distracted, in fact, to notice the Swordsman approaching behind her. Too distracted to notice that with two swings of his blade, both the adults' firearms are rendered useless pieces on the floor. Too distracted to notice him bringing his blade up for a third strike, one aimed at her.
Kaylyn, running down the stairs, noticed. Filled with that same benevolent, protective instinct that causes her to interfere in many things in which she has no part, she flies towards Lindsay, pushing her away from the Deviser and away from the descending blade.
The blade which now passes through her flesh like butter.
At the bottom of the basement stairs, Henrick looks up in horror to see the bloodied form of his significant other falling towards him. He left behind the screen and the mysterious individual who contacted him to investigate what was happening, and could not have imagined what he would find.
Nor would he have imagined that as he left, the screen would depict Chester loosing his grip and tumbling backwards.
Or that, unseen but united with her two friends, Liz would loose her footing, falling backwards into the flames.
He only acts on instinct, catching Kaylyn and dragging her into the games room, away from the man who attacked her. He has no way of knowing that the first thing the man did was grab his companion and rush out the front door, followed by a swiftly persuing Officer Dougan and Felix Ellis. His eyes wander back to the screen, unable to register the scene of Chester falling, only noticing the text that had been written while he was gone.
>YOU CAN SAVER HER YOU KNOW.>
A sleeve, impossibly extended, flashes out, catching a handhold and causing Chester to fly back towards the wall of rock, painfully regaining contact. In the basement, Henrick whispers encouragement and instruction to Kaylyn, resting the controller in her hands. Liz's form dissappears into the flames completely, and the attacking figures become still.
Chester resumes his upward struggle while Henrick shakes his girlfriend, desperately trying to keep her away long enough to do what he needs her to. Hope and terror fill him in equal portions as he finger shakily reaches towards the start button. Once pressed, the result is almost instantaneous.
As Kaylyn begins to dissappear into a green light, darkness appears in the pyre amidst the tombs. Slowly a figure, Elizabeth Dougan, emerges, but now she seems different. Her eyes are closed and her face screwed up in concentration, as fire covers her but refuses to consume. Slowly, she raises her umbrella, flaming yet undamaged like her, and points it towards the mass of enemies. Their gaunt faces couldn't possibly change expression, so perhaps it was the change in lighting that accounted for the look of terror that seemed to sweep over them. Elizabeth breathes a single, silent word, and for a moment all is still.
And then she rushes forward, trailing flame and destroying all in her path. At first the creatures attempt to fight, but quickly are reduced to fleeing. None can find an escape, though, as the flames surrounding the girl lash out like whips. In the end, the girl is left panting in the midst of a field of glowing white orbs. Physically exhausted, the girl falls to her knees, still wreathed in flame.
Chester's hand grasps upwards, finding something they had not felt since he began his ascent: cool, loose earth. Careful not to loose his hold again, he hauls himself up with the last of his strength and lies back in the dirt, looking towards the purple sky with a tired but triumphant smile.
If only his friends could see him now.
