    Re: Recursion of Fate (a Text Adventure)

    >Chester: Check internet for guides to the game.

    You wonder if there are even any guides for this thing up yet. It's fairly new, despite being on a dying system (that was the hype about it, what little there was, that it was going to be the Gamesphere's grand farewell). Then again, there are those few nuts who decided to power through the game on the release day and write walkthroughs the day after. Heck, you bet that the only reason that CS didn't already do that is because Lindsay made you all promise that you'd only play it when you got together.

    Well, its worth a check at any rate.

    You cautiously move up the stairs, ready for your father to jump out at you at any time.

    Nothing happens. Odd.

    Suspicious, you do a quick scan of the ground floor before you go upstairs. The kitchen is deserted, the entrance is silent, and even the garage is empty (apart from you father's past projects, that is).

    That really only leaves upstairs, in his room. You shrug to yourself. If he's gone there, its a good bet he won't be bugging you anymore.

    You return to your room to peruse the internet, but are immediately made aware that some of your chums have tried to contact you. It has been some time since you last checked.

    Let's see... AI and CS pestered you not long ago.

    You decide to check AI's message first. This is an entirely random decision and shows no favoratism or preference on your part.

    Pesterlog(1):

    Well.

    You try your best not to be severly disappointed about this news.

    You fail. Quite horribly, I might add.

    Oh well. Might as well check what CS wanted.

    Pesterlog(2):

    Great. Just great. Not only is AI not coming, but CS's dumb girlfriend is going to be taking her place.

    Okay, that's not fair, to either of them. Sure, its not that you really dislike her, but CD does have a bit of a way of getting under people's skin.

    It's just... okay, you've got a girlfriend, can you not bring her everywhere you go?

    Especially when the person she's replacing is AI. That just seems unfair.

    Oh great, who's pestering you now?

    Pesterlog(3):

    What is with her? She insists on trying to set you up with your best friend, and then runs off crying. And your the one who's going to catch Hades for it, just wait. If not from her, then CD will chew you out.

    This day just can't get any worse.

    >Day: Get worse.

    Two things happen simultaneously, because dramatic irony is nothing if not thorough. The doorbell rings, two notes whose sound herald the first of the guests to arrive. Shortly after, the door opens and voices can be heard downstairs, your father's and two others.

    You would have gotten the door yourself, gracious host that you are, except that at the same time, your computer informs you that somebody is pestering you.

    Wait, HIM?

    Pesterlog:

    Downstairs, the voices die down, indicating your father is done confronting your friends.

    Pesterlog(continued):

    Voices shout out your name, and you respond that you are in your room.

    Pesterlog(continued):

    You know you shouldn't. You know that he's probably just got some prank he's going to pull. But...

    >[S]Chester: Look out the window.

    [Musical accompaniment, for you...]

    Damn him. If there's another fairy with horns on your lawn like last winter...

    You reach the window and look outside. Not much is different. Simply the same old neighborhood, with row upon row of identical houses. Perhaps the sky has gotten a little darker, but it was supposed to rain today regardless.

    Once again, we cease being a specific being and allow our consciousness to wander. Over the houses, turning towards a familiar hill above a wooded park in the distance, then drawing outward, back.

    Once back far enough, we realize we are no longer viewing the scene directly, but on a screen. The screen of a computer resting on the floor of a dark, featureless room. The sole source of light, it bathes the front of the figure typing upon it, the room's only other occupant.

    In the dark, the figure is indistinct, and what features can be made out are twisted by the mingling of shadows and the blue tinged light from the computer. Of greatest interest is its face, or rather its mask, a smooth, white face with empty black eyes and a garish smile. The figures shoulders shake, though whether from laughter or crying cannot be said, perhaps even by him.

    He looks over that which he has typed, with the eyes of understaning...

    gReetings good bUddy, how's it beeN?
    oh come of It
    we both know thAt isnt true
    very MySteriOus, iSn't it?

    my souRces aRe manY
    iF yOu Really want to know
    you Got to pay the prIce
    VeeeeeeErrrry MystErious...

    His face is fixed on the screen as it once again returns to Chester.

    So should we.

    As you resume being Chester, you wonder what that clown was talking about. Nothing of note is happening outside your window.

    But dramatic irony is nothing if not thorough.

    Several things happen, so quickly following eachother that they may seem simultaneous. You see Lindsay jogging towards your house. Must have finished whatever she was doing early. She is a way off, so you can't make out many features, but you easily pick out the empty right sleeve of her jacket. Shortly afterward, you hear a sound that, if happening independantly, the self-comforting mind might claim to be thunder. There is a sound of breaking glass, a hole appears in your window, and a matching hole appears in the opposite wall.

    You are currently standing between both.

    A moment of silence passes before pain begins to make itself known in your shoulder. As a dark red begins to intrude upon the white of your lab coat, you come to the logical conclusion.

    You have been shot.

    With pleasure.

    You proceed to have something of a breakdown, which was chronicled earlier despite not happening yet. Therefor, we will not go over it again here.

    To sum up, you are currently on the ground floor, unconscious, bleeding from a bullet wound.

    What you wouldn't give to be someone else right now.

    >Be CD.

    Sure, you can do that. You are now a seventeen year old girl whose features betray a Persian ancestry. You have come with your boyfriend to one of his friend's place in order to play a game. You don't really care for this friend of his, especially after a friend of yours just messaged you (crying, presumably) about what a jerk he was.

    Of course, you wouldn't wish this kind of harm to come to him.

    Before we get anywhere, perhaps you would like to tell us your name? And what about your boyfriend?

    Re: Recursion of Fate (a Text Adventure)

    Just a bit of clarification: I mixed up CD and CS in the last post. That's what I get for giving two connected characters similar initials.

    So to summarize...

    CD (since we haven't had a chance to see it, I'll just tell you that stands for cleverDjinn) is the girl who doesn't really care for Chester and is friends with unknown shadow.

    CS (cardinalStrategist) is the guy, CD's boyfriend, and is one of Chester's best friends.

    Sorry for the confusion, and while I would love to take that whole angle you summarized simon, I've already figured out the characters I'll be using, who they are and how they relate to eachother. Throwing in another one whom I haven't had time to develop, either as an individual or as a part of this network, wouldn't be fair to you guys and would probably make everything come crashing down as I tried to fit them in.

    So, appologies once again. You may now return to your regularly scheduled chaos.

    Re: Recursion of Fate (a Text Adventure)

    >Alexa White

    Given your heritage and general middle-eastern appearance, that would be an exceptionally ironic name that you would love to have. Alas, the universe is apparently not gifted in the realms of irony, or at least it has been keeping it from you.

    >Kaylyn Antwiller

    You are KAYLYN ANTWILLER. Since this is an aside, taking place outside of the normal flow of time, we can take a moment to discuss you without otherwise adversly affecting the situation.

    You have a great love of FASHION and BEAUTY, and you always make sure you look your best, up to date with the latest styles. This love is based partially in your own PHYSICAL ATTRACTIVENESS, with your long, dark hair and your clear, brown eyes... Ahem. Your love of beauty extends into ART, and you are QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHED PAINTER. You pride yourself on knowing a great deal about your FAMILY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE, although you consider yourself a MODERN AND SOPHISTICATED WOMAN. You also have a tendancy to get involved in other people's business, even when it doesn't concern you. Sometimes especially if it doesn't concern you. You consider yourself a PHILANTHOPIST CONCERNED WITH THE WELL BEING OF ALL, while most everybody else considers you a MEDDLESOME BUSYBODY.

    Now, what about your boyfriend?

    >Jeremy Askew

    Yeah right, as if you'd ever date anybody like that.

    >Henrick Smith.

    Yeah, that's right. So your boyfriend...

    What? Someone would rather hear this from him?

    Well fine then.

    You are now HENRICK SMITH, though you allow your friends to call you Henry as well. But not Rick.

    Anyway, your interests revolve almost entirely around GAMES*. Whatever kind, whether video, board, card, or some other obscure format, if it exists, you have probably played it, beaten it, griped about how terribly broken it is, and then invited everyone you know to play it as well. You consider yourself A CONNOISEUR OF ALL FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT, while most everyone else considers you A LONELY GEEK. Despite your broad tastes, your first game of choice has and always will be CHESS. You consider it the pinnicle of strategic thought, a measure of a person's culture, and a mirror to life itself. You have often wondered what it would be like to live in a world of WHITE AND BLACK, KINGS AND QUEENS, and the like. Of course, you understand that such a thing could never actually happen, but a guy can dream, can't he? Due to your fixation on a game of RULES and ORDER, you generally keep a tidy appearance, combing your dark brown hair flat and ensuring that your SEMI-FORMAL OUTFITS are as clean as possible.

    *An addendum: your interests have in fact been recently expanded by exactly one topic: YOUR GIRLFRIEND(even then, you hit it off over an anectode about how chess originated in ancient Persia, so it might only be a subheader). You are continually amazed you could land youself such an ATTRACTIVE FEMALE CONSORT, as is most everyone else.

    So, what exactly are you two going to do with this situation?

    Inventory(Henrick):

    You do just that. I mean, what reason would you have to do otherwise? That boom? Probably just thunder. Perhaps it sounded a little odd, but what else could it be? A gunshot? As if, this is one of the safest areas you know. And even if it was, it was a ways off, no concern of yours.

    Oh, how ignorance is bliss.

    No. You will do no such thing.
