This thread is for discussion of the W40k games. Warhammer 40,000 (also known as Warhammer 40K or simply 40K) is a tabletop miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop, set in a dystopian science fantasy universe in the 41st millennium. The Imperium of Man has expanded throughout the Galaxy and is constantly under attack from Aliens, Daemons, Heretics and other enemies which seek to destroy the Imperium or have their own goals.
All of the games in the Warhammer 40k series are listed here.

Are we talking novels or games because I'm pretty sure novels have always been serious business.
The novels as a whole hit a really wide spectrum, but Cain is generally a bit lighter and softer and more humorous than a lot of other stuff. Still grim, but not as grim.

Hence why my comic is significantly less grimdark than it has any business being, considering the main character is supposed to be shooting people.
You know, I'd like to play more with my fully painted army, but every new powerful Codex that comes out just reminds me how much of a sucker you are if you pick Orks sort of prevents me from enjoying myself too much.
Maybe I just need to find people who don't cheese out.

Personally, I think the biggest laughs can be gotten out of 40k when the grimdark srsbusiness is played completely straight against a backdrop of ludicrous over-the-topness.
Or as penny-Arcade put it: http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/03/05
It's a very accurate description, and it personally makes me laugh.
The other day I was bored and modified the game files for dark crusade.
The Necron Lord found himself with several upgrades, including the ability to start the reckoning, use Red Miles across a large area, slow everything down and fire off massive explosive bursts of ridiculous green shit.
He also has obligatory infinite teleportation and the tendency to periodically pulse and flicker with nice green energy bolts.
Sure Necron Lord English is stupidly overpowered, ruins the game and is practically unbeatable by anyone other than his alternate self from another team, but the potential to go up against 7 "insane" level opponents at once still kept things fast paced and interesting.
It only took a day to be completely over it, but for a brief moment, it was fun.
Sorry for necroposting.
My favorite would probably be the Death Angel card game. It's portable, easy to learn, and the best part is that it has a solitaire mode. Damn, we really need a tactical FPS Space Hulk game.

40K is something I've done for a fair few years, starting with Tyranids but after the disappointing latest codex I performed a dirty bandwagon jump to the shiny new Dark Eldar, although in fairness I have always liked the DE but their former dreadful models put me off; no point spending hundreds of pounds on something that looks like crap. Although as a strike against me have ended up with a quite unpleasant Venom-spam army purely by chance (I was going for the antithesis of my combat-orientated Tyranids with the shootiest DE list I could make, which ended up being the tournament favourite, oops...)
Anyway 40K is pretty fun, a decent way to make friends (as far as nerdy hobbies go anyway) and a generally pleasant way to pass the time.
Yesssss...
I don't play much anymore, and even when I did it was just me and a few friends playing low points games (all I have is the Tau starter pack). Recently we also kind of got into some of the tabletop RP stuff as well, but that didn't last too long.
Love the video games too, I've got Fire Warrior, DoW, WA, DC, DoW2, and CR. Also got pretty far in Space Marine while playing it at a friends.
