Lets Read Gunnerkrigg Court (Now On Chapter 2)

So the idea came up in the GC thread to get a few voice actors together to read the comic aloud. I'm not doing much until school starts, so I'm glad to organize it. We're doing The Shadow and the Robot as an experiment. Basically people will read through their character's parts of the comic. We'll keep the files on a dropbox share, just ask if you need access or help setting up dropbox. I'll be editing all the voices together, and moving the comic strip around to the right places at the right times.

Ok so lets talk The Shadow and the Robot. This is a short simple one, good for a test of how this'll go. I only need voices for Annie, Robot, and the tall teacher guy.

    All ideas welcome!

What's your policy on British accents? (Fake or otherwise.)

I imagine some people at the Court as having a boarding school accent in my headcanon. Anachronistic! But so is the Court.

(Truth be told, in my headcanons for unvoiced material, most people are completely without accent or vocal register, so much so that Annie occasionally sounds like Mr. Spock to me and I have no problem with this.)

This sounds absolutely amazing. I only wish my voice wasn't horridly monotone when I read things.

I have auditioned for the robot:

    And the tall man:

Hope they are to your liking. Oh and just be aware, if this project gets off the ground I am SO auditioning for coyote. I will be waiting for that day...Oh yes...
I'm a voice actor for "Let's Read Homestuck!"

Re: Lets Read Gunnerkrigg Court (An Experiment)

Very nice! We just need an Annie and we can do the first chapter. Keep in mind that in this chapter Annie does a lot of monologuing.

By the way, what does anyone think of adding subtle sound effects? Like maybe some kind of unobtrusive suspense noise during the part where robot crosses the bridge (that part was pretty tense.)

Oh and Tooch, if you haven't set up a dropbox please PM me your email so I can send you an invite. If you already have one then I guess PM me your email anyway so I can add you to the share!

Gah, ninja'd by Tooch. Ah well, I'll wait for more male characters to show up. Also, I sent a link to this thread to a friend of mine who could do a fantastic Annie. Hopefully she'll see this when she wakes up.

Ambient sound effects are a fantastic idea, in fact the video would probably be weird without them. Wind blowing and stuff.

Good! Also maybe a buzz from those harsh lights. Better check if my Sony stuff has a sound effects pack.

I'm pretty sure the court is somewhere in England, isn't it?
If it is, British accents should be fine, right?
    It's definitely somewhere in Europe.
You are now eternitiesReflected. You have gained a tumblr recently, so that is cool.

The comic absolutely takes place in England. British accents would actually be preferable. It's not clear what part of England, or what the local accent would be, but I always got the impression the Court has people from all over the country and even the world (Like Paz and Gamma).

I believe there is an entire subforum dedicated to this very task. Man some of the voices on that are legit.

e: oh wow not a fan of the voice actor for annie, serious issue here.

Re: Lets Read Gunnerkrigg Court (An Experiment)

Huh, that's a cool thing. I'm looking to go in a somewhat different direction, more of a lets just read it and get a lot of content out direction. I watched the first bit, we certainly won't be doing much theme music or dramatic stuff, just a reading really. In fact I'm not gonna go on there much because I don't want to accidentally copy anything off of them.

Anyway I see the main difference being that we are doing this very streamlined, just some voice actors having fun and putting together videos. Their thing is a huge project to make a polished product, and I can respect that. Ours is mainly to have fun and make videos (mspa forums being the creative crucible that it is.)

Also they are on indefinite hiatus as of last summer, that's a bummer!

(By the way if we ever have to choose between multiple voice actors for roles, we'll vote in thread)

Re: Lets Read Gunnerkrigg Court (An Experiment)

You will definitely be receiving auditions for every female character from me. I'd love to audition for Kat particularly, she's my favourite.
But for now, I shall drop in with an audition for Annie:

    Notes:
I as using a copy of the book for a script. Apologies for occasional page turn noise (and one point where it hits my desk, obviously I'd use an on-screen transcription for episodes). I decided to mainly go received pronunciation but to allow occasional slips of my natural Northern English accent to come through since Annie's mum does speak with a very strong northern accent. I am pretty skilled at most flavours of Northern English, so even if I'm no good for Antimony, I think there are a bunch of characters who turn up later I could potentially lend a voice to. Example of me doing a strong Northen accent (for the UU troll for laughs) here:

Very good, very good! We're set for chapter 1! Don't worry about casting, I'm fine with changing roles every chapter if you want. PM me your email, I'll get you set up on dropbox. That goes for you too Tooch!

aw dang i was interested, but aside from the fact that there's already an annie, i forgot they're british and i'm not sure my accent would be up to snuff since i'd never voice acted before anyways. but i'll definitely look forward to this being a thing that happens!

Re: Lets Read Gunnerkrigg Court (An Experiment)

It's worth noting that not all characters are British. Coyote is from the American Southwest, and Reynard and Ysegrin appear in folklore native to France, Holland, and Germany. Furthermore, Jeanne is French, Diego and Paz are Spanish, Anja is presumably eastern european, and Basil is Greek. So if you can't affect a convincing British accent, you might have the opportunity to contribute.

Re: Lets Read Gunnerkrigg Court (An Experiment)

None of our characters are set in stone ever really though. If you can produce a good Annie, felicitousArtisan is also interested in paying Kat.

Also, all the Annie parts are in! Splendid job fA. The video is done up through page 8, waiting on Tooch now to join the dropbox and submit the Robot stuff (and also tall teacher).

Yeah, as Drillgorg says, I'm not considering my position as Annie as being set in stone here (Not like with Let's Read Homestuck and Kanaya where if anybody even hinted about wanting to take it off me I'd chainsaw them in half). This is quite a casual kind of project and I'm happy to switch roles if somebody else has a better take on the character (and I'm sure a bunch of people do). Feel free to have a go at some parts and stuff!

    Oh man, bravo! Great stuff!

If I may make a small suggestion: although the voicing was perfect, there were times when the narration and Annie's dialog didn't have enough distance between them and blended into one another. Whoever ends up playing Annie in the future, perhaps you could try to make Narrator!Annie sound a bit different than story!Annie maybe a bit older, a bit lower in pitch or something along those lines?

    Again, good job everyone!
