I dunno, maybe the quality of cartoonnetwork is subjective. As in, you like the stuff that was on when you were a kid, and when you get older you hate the stuff that they play. Like maybe if I was a kid still I would lap this shit up that they're playing now, my little brother sure seems to.

Also do they still do the day each year or so where they play The Iron Giant for 24 hours? Because that was THE BEST THING.

I've been watching Boomerang and reminiscing some, and I started to think about this too. I mean, there was some pretty ridiculous stuff on when I was a kid and I loved it. But then I remember one of my older brothers (probably around my age at the time) looking over at the TV and laughing at something I didn't think was particularly funny when I was watching it.

Take the Johnny Bravo Christmas Special for instance. It had Donny Osmond on it, which I thought was funny because he made everyone speak in song, but I watched it last night and it was ten times more hilarious just because it's Donny Osmond.

The Fairly OddParents, too. They actually put thought into their jokes, too.

Now I look at Adventure Time and the Regular Show, and while they're charming and there's the occasional gem, it's just like someone was locked in a closet and forced to write down every bizzare thought that came into their head and whelp, there's your plot. I really do believe that the quality has gone down.

And the kids that watch that stuff... Are getting weirder. and WEIRDER.

Courage and Billy and Mandy..... Chowder and Flapjack..... Adventure Time and Regular Show....

Cartoon Network makes a point of having a couple off the wall shows in their line up at the same time. I still remember the voting contest that got Billy and Mandy green-lit. They showed several piolet shows (Megas XLR and KND where also in the mix) and Billy and Mandy won.... cause frankly, kids are just as GRIM as everybody else.

they also based wiether or not to renew Samuri Jack for another season on DVD sales instead of ratings..... On the other hand, they did keep Ed, Edd, and Eddie slowly going for nearly 10 years.

If you ever watched the short cartoon prior to the Regular Show..... then you'll know that the whole show would be made on acid (flavored gum).

But then on the flip side you've got stuff like Pokemon that when you were a kid seemed TOTALLY RAD but when you watch it now it is downright embarrassing.

    Gah, don't even remind me.

The Annoying Orange is actually pretty clever, but this is a CN adaptation of the Annoying Orange, so... yeah, sounds like it's gonna blow.

    I agree with Drillgorg.
Half the stuff they play on TV is actually really enjoyable to the kids. Isn't that what cartoons have become though?
    FOR THE KIDS.

But there are still some good gems out that people old and young like. My college cousin enjoyed Flapjack and still does. Favorite scene: throwing the juvenile delinquents out of the mechanical whale!

I think part of the problem here is that they have become too good at making animation appeal to kids.

Because kids don't always have the best taste (I think...)?

Good thing that you can still find some awesome gems out there, right, Spycomic?

I found most shows idiotic when I was a kid.

    Pokemans were a great game.

    Not a great show. :\

I thought that was the show that resorted to "refer to a gag spewed out a few minutes ago thrice an episode" and "pop culture references the writers think are clever" for their jokes.
Remember, parrots can make referential humor so I wouldn't exactly say thought is put into it.

Almost all the shows you liked as a kid were bad and rose-tinted glasses say they're better than whatever bad cartoon is on now. "Aw man hey arnold is great--" no wait it's just the same kids show with a different flavor.
Shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show are like such because cartoondudes saw the popularity things like Spongebob and My Little Pony got with older viewers and said "hmmm if we do that dada/web-culture-referential mix we can hook that demographic that's gaga for nostalgia and still is into cartoons."

Re: Shitty Cartoon Network Lineup Abomination Station

So it's basically a case of trying to appeal to a certain audience, as does occur with most programming?

At least we still have Pixar for really, really good animated films (in my opinion).

Adventure Time is by far an amazing show. Up there with Flapjack, Foster's, Courage, PPG, and Phineas and Ferb.
With Fairly Odd Parents and many other shows, it was the repetitive-ness that made those shows funny. Some 'toons didn't know when to draw the line. Others did. The ones that did were funny.

Now Space Ghost Coast to Coast on the other hand... that was pure funny. That and the Muppets.
I tend to be a guy who feels nostalgic for shows I never grew up on. Shows that I was born too late to see. Somehow, that has made experiencing them now all the more better.

Re: Shitty Cartoon Network Lineup Abomination Station

I've realized that at this point I have seen every single Tom and Jerry movie and every single scooby doo movie like

    20 billion times

The new SD movies aren't even movies anymore

they're just extended episodes. I remember the first 2 'modern' scooby doo movies. Zombie Island, for example. Excellent animation, and the monsters were

    *Gasp*

    Real monsters.

Now it's just "GASP X MONSTER is TERRORIZING US WE BETTER SOLVE THIS MYSTERY OH WOW IT WAS X PERSON ALL ALONG AND HE WAS AFTER Y TREASURE"

Oh i forgot to complain about tom and jerry hold on

    I like tom.

I love when Tom 'wins' in the episodes. And I hate how Jerry is a self righteous douchebag. Seriously half of the bad things happen to Tom purely out of Jerry instigating the event.

Like that shitty Magic Ring movie. Jerry takes the ring because he's a little bitch and then Tom spends the entire movie getting it back so he isnt' turn into like smoulders.

Then Tom gets it back but it gets stuck on his finger or something so the magician zaps the shit out of him and rewards Jerry with some awesome shit which he clearly doesn't deserve since it was all his fucking fault in the first place

Any Tom and Jerry related anything that isn't a classic short is blasphemous in the highest degree.

Re: Shitty Cartoon Network Lineup Abomination Station

One day I woke up dry-mouthed and ache-headed. It was a revenge taken by a night of furiously imbibing inebriating beverages. I searched quick for some kind of ruse to serve as a distraction and, driven by impulse and the remaining alcohol in my system, I turned on the television. What awaited me was not relief, but Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes. The horror. THE HORROR. What sense did that movie even make? What creature could have possibly imagined that to be anything close to resembling a good idea? All I know is that I ended up with a worse hangover from that movie than from any ingested judgment-imparing molecules.

Re: Shitty Cartoon Network Lineup Abomination Station

The only movie that should mix mice with Sherlock Holmes is "The Great Mouse Detective". I don't even know why there are all these "Tom and Jerry" movies. And now The Looney Tunes Show? No offense to anyone who likes it, but it just isn't right IMO. I mean, it doesn't seem to have any connection other than the characters' appearances.

You could be right. Maybe I'm just resistant to shows like Adventure Time and the like just because it's new stuff and "not as good as my cartoons. I mean, my brothers always disapproved of the shows I tried to watch (Rocket Power, Code Lyoko, Avatar) so this might just be a resurfacing of that, too. I'm sure I'd enjoy some of these new shows if I tried them. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. (see what I did there?)

As far as kids getting weirder (and I'd say this is pretty apparent), maybe it isn't necessarily because of the shows, but the time spent watching them. It seems that in our busy society parents and siblings are necessarily around as much to show kids what a genuine, healthy good time is like. America today seems to be less community-driven than it was before.

Oh, and screw Dadaism. Never liked that crap. It's so frustrating to me, because you can't argue against it because of how "abstract" it is. Like metafiction that takes itself seriously (not like MSPA Adventures - it's metafiction, but it's not obnoxious about it), if you try to write a commentary about it then you're pretty much succumbing to it. OBFUSCATING!

    RAGE!

I feel that dadaism doesn't take itself seriously. It's hanging toilets on walls to make fun of the people who take that stuff seriously. Postmodernism takes itself seriously. It's like House of Leaves, which is oh-so deep and meta and complicated and layered and yet fails at basic story aspects. Dada is more "this stuff is stupid and meta and we know it" and postmodernism is "this stuff is ridiculous and meta and it's art and serious business"

Though I agree. Postmodernism dones poorly makes we want to punch people through their stupid faces.

Maybe I'm just bad at reading through Tzara's genius layers of irony, but The Dada Manifesto seems to take itself seriously. Then again, the last time I read it was in 10th grade.

I think he was going for "babble for pages and wait until they realize that I'm a gibbering madman". I hope.

The only manifesto I think dada needs is either "Fuck yo couch" or "Did you actually expect us to have one?" Anything more sensible and organized with that is going into postmodern territory and seriousness.

perhaps i'm showing my age a bit, but MY shows where the shows back in the early/mid 90's. Disney's Gargoyals, Rescue Rangers, Talespin, Duck Tales, New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Bonkers; WB's Batman the Animated Series, Tiny Tunes, Animaniacs, Taz-mania, Freakazoid; Nick's Rugrats, Ah! Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life...

BUT, i've never actually stopped watching cartoons.

I love Adventure Time because it is deeper then it looks. My brother, otoh, hates it because "All the Jokes been done before.." (like all of Jake's line's he'd say have been said better in Futurama) and "I don't see a point, other then them being stupid." He didn't like Flapjack either because he called it a "gross-out show".... I think he watches too many boring animes.

I can enjoy shows like Avatar:TLA and Gargoyals for their masterful story telling aspecs.... but at the same time i loved Flapjack and Invader Zim more for their unique style and "doing it for the art" attitude then their plotlines.
