Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
[Image Temporarily Not Extant.] This is the thread where we introduce ourselves as a forum, and you, in turn, introduce yourself!
1.1: Introduction
1.2 Forum Directory (aka "where should I post?") 2.1 Forum History 2.2 Questions and Answers (FAQ) , sir or madam, and welcome to the MSPA Forums! To summarize this place as a whole, we're all about having fun and general shenanigans. So just be yourself and find a conversation to jump into! And don’t be spooked if we go off topic, because we do that a lot.
The law of the land here is Respect and Teamfriendliness (which means to be chummy to one another and to always make an effort to contribute positively to the community you see around you); a more specific set of rules is here and you should read them if you haven’t already or else we won’t take you out for Dairy Queens after this is over.
These forums are looked over by 6 administrators (Andrew, Betelgeuse, Byron, Michael, NotASenator, Ryan North, and tynic) and 8 moderators (ashdenej, Avi, Blueberry, Drillgorg, Esrever, Lexxy, ProfessorLizzard, Wesley Foxx and Zuki) who may edit your posts, or move/lock your thread. But don’t feel personally offended, they’re only trying to make this place better! And don’t feel afraid to approach them (PM them) if you're having a problem with another user or any moderating descisions done.
The most important thing to remember overall is to have a good time here! This forum is like a posting carnival, and you should have fun with it.
Great! Now that the boring stuff is over with… it’s time for me to help you find your way through the forums! You see, I'm member of the Badger Buckos (troop 105b), and if I can successfully guide you across the forums, I can get my “helping baffled weirdos” badge. So come with me on a magical tour through the internet!
1.2 Forum Directory
First, there's the most densely-populated subforum—the MSPA subforum. That's where you talk about all of the crap in Homestuck (and Problem Sleuth). Talk about how sweet the last update was, talk about things you just realized happened in past updates, re-caption the images from the updates, tell the world your ideas and crackpot theories about how Dad is the Mobster Kingpin of Homestuck or how the troll planet is just a metaphor for the Reconstruction South, gush about the newest What Pumpkin Merchandise, discuss the fresh jams created by the MSPA Music Team, or ask questions about the story/forums that don't deserve their own thread.
Also, if you'd like to discuss a recent update, perhaps try discussing it on our pesterchum IRC channel (#pesterchum on esper) instead talking about it in the MSPA Chat thread. Discussing it on our IRC channels is more conducive to expressing simple reactions, and helps relieve the forum’s typical post-update load.
The MSPA Forum Adventures subforum is by far the most expansive subforum. It's almost its own community: some who post there can end up posting nowhere else. It's easy to see why: the whole subforum is a lot of free entertainment from a bunch of dedicated, personable individuals. If you're looking to get started in the world of the MSPA Forum Adventures subforum, just ask in the MSPAFA general chat thread or jump right in to an adventure to make a suggestion.
People advertise their adventures in this thread, post fanart for other adventures in this thread, and you can find many adventures mirrored off-site in a style similar to Andrew’s MSPAs. There’s a table of contents for the forum adventures that have been completed. Lastly, if you are looking for an IRC channel to discuss MSPAFA, go on #MSPAFA on Esper.
There are also two subforums for the MSPAFA forum: the Completed Forum Adventures collection and the Cradle—
*The Completed Forum Adventures is a dignified resting place for the minority of adventures which are seen through to completion or those that have passed 100 pages and needed to make a new thread. Feel free to necrobump threads in here if you want to say you enjoyed them; it’s predominantly an archive forum, and new users would most likely enjoy them.
*The Cradle is the go to place for all aspiring adventure authors. Implemented to be quality control to filter out the majority of adventures that get abandoned before anything happens, it is the only place in the Forum Adventures subforum where threads can be made. Once you show effort into updating your adventure, it will be moved out into the main subforum.
The Games forum holds all forum activities with a competitive element that tend to have 'game-like' mechanics like RTDs, DUELS, Tile games, and the eternally popular Mafia. Here you will find stricter restrictions on player actions (like a game), or game-like mechanics (like stats or inventory systems) with a much better-defined ‘win’ condition. Toss around your game ideas in the Games Subforum Chat Thread. Don't forget to read the very important rules! And always remember, that it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game.
The Collab/Roleplay forum, born from the Miscellaneous and Role-play subforums, holds any and all threads that focus on collaboratively telling a story or role-playing and that aren't so heavy on the mechanics, such as Grand Battles, GURPS and other RP campaigns. It also houses many planning threads and other projects related to the rest of the grander games and adventures forum, like Adventure Critique Thread, the Music Request Thread, and the Collaborative Planning Thread.
Further inside, is the Sburb/Trollslum role-playing subforum for all Hussnasty Derivative Role-plays. From one of the Aliens from Alternia to a freaky horrorterror, any RP based on Homestuck goes here. Make sure to read the TrollSlum Guidelines before posting.
The newest addition, the Webcomics Forum is the go-to place to talk about any other webcomic on the entire internet! Come and discuss the latest update of KC Green's Gunshow, Chris Hasting's Adventures of Dr. McNinja, Tom Siddell's Gunnerkrigg Court, or our very own Michael Firman's Moe! If you don't see or don't think that a webcomic has/needs a thread, then go on into the webcomic chat thread and speak to your hearts content. Just remember, not liking Nedriod is against the rules.
The Art forum is where you go for one of two reasons:
The first reason is that you have done a work of art, and would like feedback or critique.
In that case, you may want to check out the doodle thread for drawing, the creative writing thread for writers, and the "post music you made" thread for musicians. If you plan on making a large number contributions to one of those threads and don’t want to “take up too much space” in them, or have made some kind of more specific or involved work you think is needing more varied and detailed feedback/would like possible discussion on it, consider making your own thread.
The second reason for hanging in the Art forum is if you’re a fan-artist. There, you can do fan-art of the characters, draw romantic fan-art of the characters (but not too romantic), read and write up some fan-fiction, or listen to and make some MSPA fan music. If you want to chat about fan-art stuff on IRC, try the Pesterlite IRC channel (#pesterlite on esper)--it's like pesterchum, but more fan art-centric.
There's also a subforum in for Group Projects (and Art activity Threads): it's where you go for collaborations, game modifications, activities (like "draw a picture with your eyes closed") and forming teams for creative projects. You can make humorous photoshops of past MSPA panels, or if you’re looking to get all meta with your fan-art, here’s a thread where we draw other forumgoers.. Lastly, there is a much anticipated Fan-Made Music Album, a collaboration between the fan artists in a way similar to how MSPA's Music team does it.
The Fan Projects/Meetups Subforum is the perfect place for any extensive project related to MSPA or the forums at large. Want to set up a meet-up? Made a nifty program? Do you have a Fan-site? This is the place for you. You can download and give feedback on the Chat Clients based on PesterChum, view the adventure's of multiple bunnies that were mailed across space and time, the similar adventures of a certain demon's coat or a beautiful pony, randomize yourself a Sburb Title and Land, or input in the upcoming NEPETAQUEST 2011. Check out the Meet-Up Index before making a thread asking about fans in your area!
The Movies/Music/Books and Games! forums make up the Discussion subforum (Also affectionately referred to as the the Nerdcrap subforum).
The Movie-Music-Books is where you go when you want to be a fan of popular media and see if other people here also are similarly fans of the piece of media you have in mind. There's a thread for movies, music, books, and a general links thread (as in, "here's a cool website; here's a cool youtube video"). As long as you make a passable Opening Post explaining what it is and how to get or see it, you can talk about any show or series, just check and make sure there isn't one already!
The Games!, is there for any kind of game, be it card, tabletop, indie, console, or whatever else! There is a MSPA Steam group, and a thread forgames by independent developers.
If you want to talk about games in general or don't think that a game deserves its own thread, then just take it to the Video Game Chat Thread.
Just like in the main media subforum, you can make any thread for any game that's out there, providing that it's opening post has clear information about it. If you plan on playing or running a game on the forum, you might want to head to Collabs/Roleplay or the Forum Games sections.
At the top of the main forum page is the Administrative Forums, the three subforums inside are where the moderators and admins keep us all up to date about what's going on.
The Forum Questions and Answers forum is here so you can give general feedback, report bugs, or ask other questions regarding the technical workings of the forum. It also has all of the latest happenings on the forum software, so pay attention!
Below it is the Admin Notes forum where the moderators and administrators keep track of universal forum things in three threads. Here you can look up the changes to the MSPA Forum software, a list of known bugs NotASenator is working on, and the Log of people who are banned from the forums.
Finally, there is also the Forum Events subforum, where the admins will keep us up to date on forum wide happenings, such as the monthly Name Changing Thread.
At the very bottom, we have The Archives, there to commemorate threads of yonder. For a long time, all that was there was the locked Forapocalypse subforum, which was a 3-day cross-forum event regarding the thematic demise of the old forums (since we switched forum servers and software). The images to the stickyed threads are currently broken, but a mirror can be found here. Since then, some moderators began archiving art threads and various old, timeless threads as well.
The Suggestion Box: there is a crater where it used to be ha ha
And that brings us back here. The General Chat Forum is laid-back altogether and the people who frequent it are pretty chill. The map in the spoiler below contains links to some of the more prominent threads to chat in.
Your guide to the MSPA General Chat Forum! Now with Links!
1. Introduction Thread: YOU ARE HERE
2. General Chat: Where a categorically off-topic thread can go off-topic.
3. Dream Thread: "Find a hammock and jump aboard; sail off to dreamland. Hitch your hopes to the side like a little dingy and steamer off into the land of the autonomic mindpictures."
4. Take Pictures of Yourself and Post Them thread: then hope for praise, or at least not outright insults
5. Discussion of User-Representing Images (Avatar chat): Too many memes, not enough middle-aged jiggle-women
6. Old Thread Treasure Stash: The best from threads of yore.
7. Webcomics Discussion Thread: Swing by and see if it's one of the pages where we badtalk randall munroe Now a Subforum!
8. Food Thread: If only Willy Wonka were to finally perfect his "send food over da wires" technology, this thread would be useful
9. School Discussion Thread: "Most ominous of all, the War rearoused the snarling dog of the slavery issue, and the beast did not stop yelping until drowned in the blood of the Civil War"
((Can Town does not exist yet so this has been placed under a spoiler.))
And that brings us back here. Can Town is laid-back altogether and the people who frequent it are pretty chill. Here you can talk all about yourself and any tales to your fellow forum goers! The main purpose is directed conversation about forum goers, and off-topic things will not be tolerated. [Stuff about threads to be added later.]
And lastly, one of the keys to becoming part of a forum's community is its IRC channels. We've got several here.
On the Esper.net server: (you can use any irc client like mibbit to do this)
#Pesterchum (discusses the story of Homestuck, especially recent updates)
#Pesterlite (a fan-artist centric IRC room)
#MSPAFA (a gathering place for authors and readers of those in the Forum Adventures subforum to talk about adventures)
#GrandBattle (for authors of the Grand Battle adventures in the Collab subsubforum of MSPAFA to discuss and plot Grand Battles)
#mspafia (come by and talk about mafia or any forum game that's in the Games subforum)
On the IRC of http://blog.skaia.net/
#MSPlayers (for voice actors and friends)
#Radio (for discussing Homestuck radio broadcasts)
Remember, there’s something in each forum for everyone. So interact freely!
(Or you can stay for the next post and learn more about the history of the forum and read some frequently asked questions!)
2.1 Forum History--in which I give the illusion that I know about things
So now you know where and how to post , but you’re still afraid you won’t fit in with all the cool kids (despite assurances that you probably will!) because you don’t know what to post. Don’t worry, we’ll let you in on a few things, just to let you get used to the waters. Presenting: the History of the Forums.
I. The Gangbunch Fora
The MSPA forums started back on December 31, 2004 as the Team Special Olympics forums, run by Andrew Hussie. A year or so later, Michael Firman merged the forums of his site, Firman Productions, with the TSO forums, creating the Gangbunch Fora (This name is why some people call the forums of today the MSPA Fora). The Gangbunch Fora, which was both an offshoot of the Penny Arcade Artists’ Corner and a place for the makers of a few comics to hang about and as a casual comicking conglomerate. The first comic was Team Special Olympics, run by Andrew, Betelgeuse, and Byron Hussie. Team Special Olympics has many lasting comics worth reading, like And It Don’t Stop, and Zoosmells. And a graphic novel called Whistles. Andrew also has someblogs, too, in addition to making the ever-popular Star Trek edits along with forumgoer Jan. Andrew went under the forum name Special_Olympics at first before changing to Andrew. Betelgeuse also has a website for her own art and currently resides over most of the business part of running MSPA, including the official MSPA merchandise label, What Pumpkin.
The second member of the Gangbunch comic conglomerate was Michael Firman, creator of Firman Productions/Moe. And the third initial member, Tauhid, made the comic strips Rocket Surgery comics, Spells and Whistles, Good Ship Chronicles, and Epicsplosion. He may not post anymore, but this thread between him and Andrew has left a lasting “Christmas every day”-like presence.
Lastly, Byrobot was added to the initial Gangbunch three. Byron Hussie left Team Special Olympics and started his own comic, with the help of tynic. After initially being abandoned, it was rebooted by just Byron, but with the programming help of Gankro (who has done the flash programming work for quite a few MSPA updates, like this one—however, Gankro is not a member of the Gangbunch). Tynic has a site for her art, as well.
The Gangbunch Fora grew, although not much. Only 388 users signed up in those first four years. The Gangbunch Fora stayed a tight-knit community, with plenty of post celebrations, occasional glorious battles between forumers, and a semi-active art subforum. The best way to learn of those times is through this thread: the Old Thread Treasure Stash. (Note: some of the things in that thread are regarding things after the Gangbunch era).
However, along the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009, MSPA started to gain popularity as other webcomics started to link to it. The suggestion box, at the time, was run on a blog and became increasingly inefficient with more people following it and suggesting things. Then, on April 6, 2009, Andrew announced that he would be starting a new adventure using a new suggestion box on the Fora. To reflect this, he changed the name of the fora from the Gangbunch Fora to the MSPA Forums. And everyone, seeing as how they needed to register in order to make suggestions now, registered all at once. Compared to 388 users registering from December 31, 2004 to April 5, 2009, there were around 1350 people that joined up in the 8 days from April 6-April 13. This change meant that that these fora were now…
II. The MSPA Forums.
From now on, when I speak of the history of the MSPA Forums, I mean “of the period on or after April 6, 2009.” Anything before I will refer to as being in the Gangbunch Fora.
The MSPA Forums started off rather smoothly—or at least marginally smoother than you’d expect when the user list for a forum quadruples in a week. There was a simple fan-edit art thread, a small number of fan-made adventures that a majority of people in the community could follow and keep up with, and people didn’t concern themselves with rapid fire posting so much. It was a simpler time.
However, as Homestuck progressed, more posters joined, and the suggestion box was closed and opened and closed again, the community grew to what it is today—a two-headed community-fandom hydra of posting. It also picked up some fads and jokes along the way.
The best way for you to learn about the history and culture of the MSPA Forums is through the following pictomap, which was made for MSPA Week 2010 (the celebration of the Forums' and Homestuck's anniversaries). Simply pick a thing you're interested to learn about and look at the legend for what it is:
1) This is the spider from Roomland, which was likely the most popular fan-adventure in all of MSPAFA's history. Made by a forumgoer named Marty, it even got a nod from Andrew in a news post.
2) A smuppet on top of Jigsaw. Jigsaw (the MSPA varient) originated in this thread, which detailed Metalbourne, Michael and Andrew alternating in telling a story involving plush pornography (predating that of Dave's bro) and gruesome torture. Also, putting nudeplushes on top of previously-existing avatars was briefly an avatar fad.
3) This is Doctor Derek Brinner, who does not actually exist. Doctor Brinner is a former forum injoke, started by former moderator Marelo in the IDE/Theory thread as a way to parody the overcomplexity of Andrew's adventures. It quickly caught on with people chipping in their own creative contributions as to what happened in "Andrew's longest MSPA to date." However, the joke soon wore out as people tried to "canonize" what was essentially an undefined folklore. Now, Brinner jokes are met with 10% praise, 30% derision and 60% indifference.
4) Gangbunch forumgoer Leaf was in a coma. He woke up from said coma. And the when he did, the last thing he remembered before his coma happened was MSPA. This is an inspirational read.
5) This is the MSPA face. It's represented by the emoticon :MSPA: . It seems to be an all purpose emoticon. SleepingOrange says it can be used for 1) Sarcasm 2) To express one's own mistakes 3)to imply someone else's foolishness 4) in response to a baffling post. It should also be noted that you should not overuse it!
6) This is Gankro. He made the "YOU THERE. BOY." walkaround, the programming for the start of Act 4 walkaround, and the Imp Green Slime Ghost ride game (in addition to other things), and his antics are a major funfuel of these forums. His website, http://timelesschaos.com/, contains many fun jokeflashes and forum-based fungames, such as a smuppet customizer. Also, he made the Fact Seagull based off forumgoer Wheeeeeeatthins's avatar and propensity to spout dubious facts (such as the entire forum history you are reading now).
7) The line from Jailbreak, "What Pumpkin?" is used in many situations. Mostly, it's involving posts or links or anything disappearing.
8 ) People just love quoting SB&HJ.
9) These are bee jokes. Forumgoers Norivia and Superfrequency teamed up for a collab adventure called Bee. The adventure was swiftly bedecked with pages of bee puns, coursing through the heart of the MSPAFA forum like a gargantuan river of unfunny honey.
10) These are Fufu and ChuChu, recurring characters on Byrobot.net. In one comic, they had a soup battle. This resulted in the phrase "STIR STIR STIR" to be used whenever someone was stirring up trouble. Also, Gankro made this emoticon, but it ended up looking like RITS RITS RITS.
11) Corgi Adventure, a spinoff adventure by MyifanW, has caused much sadness due to unfortunate things happening to the Corgi (who is forced several times to Corgitears), and due to the twist on page 1.
12) Adding sunglasses and pointing to one's own post was a brief but wide-sweeping avatar fad. (Schazer compiled this)
13)"Your name is JOHNNY EGGBERT. Stuck to your hair is a WOWWIPOP. What is your move?" (By Digeridude; came from the first fanart thread, which was more of a "fan-sprite-edit" thread; also makes a cameo in John's house walkaround flash if you press ctrl+T in most browsers.)
Also, it's worth noting that the first avatar fad of the MSPA Forums was fan-edits of John's sprite.
14) One of the first MSPAFAs to be made and completed was The Mutewood. The scary eye from it was made into a symbol for any scary goings-on early in the MSPA Forums era.
15) The first MSPAFA was Bird Wizard—a parody recitation of Problem Sleuth with bird wizards instead of hard-boiled detectives.
16) When the Peregrine Mendicant was introduced and her love for was divulged, a likewise fervor (mostly in avatar form) for the sending of letters and parcels was admitted by the forums. However, some people here do not share the sentiment, no not so much.
17) is the official drink of the forums. If you ever have/go to an MSPA party, bring a six pack of TaB. Also, tab has become a political party.
18 ) This comes from the Man on Man Suck Off thread linked to earlier when talking about Tauhid.
19) Humanimals are loved by all. There was also a time when if you acted up you were given a humanimal avatar. However, this would be seen as a boon nowadays, as one can see from Epamynondas.
20) Global Jam 2009 was heavy into Captain Planet lovin' (thanks to former mod AllIsLost). Global Jams are sporadic threads that occur as global announcements. They are like block parties for our forums.
21) This dancing lady was Gankro's avatar for a while. Many found it creepy. So naturally what happened next was that 10-30 different people adopted it as an avatar for a day.
22) Sexycakes are a relic from earlier fanart threads. The thing was to make steamy pictures of (usually carapaced) characters popping out of cakes.
Sexy with cakes. Sexycakes. (It's Not Butter did this)
23) Moderator WesleyFoxx, after an offhand comment regarding self-maleness, received a humorous comment from former moderator Phantos: "Wesley is a BOY?!" It's been parroted quite a few times.
24) Beardate is a one-update adventure made as a one-off joke by sfou, spawned in the IRC channel. It's the original "You Have to Burn the Trope" adventure--this is an adventure that is made with the sole intent of ending quickly. While this remains a funny piece of history, making "Burn the Trope" adventures nowadays will almost always be highly frowned upon by the MSPAFA community and can even get you a big infraction and/or a MSPA TRIBAL CHALLENGE.
25) Former Mod SleepingOrange created one of the first popular MSPAFAs, called Blobby Adventure. In it, the sexless blob characters were distinguished with the pronouns Schle and Schler (lifted from a Futurama movie); these in turn were used for gender-nonspecific pronouns in the MSPAFA section for a few months.
26) This is a Reicat—the second avatar fad of the MSPA Forums. Forumgoer Reiface drew a cat in the second fan-art thread that perfectly fit the shape of John's and Rose's heads (there were only two characters back then). So came the editing already existing avatars to include a reicat atop the head. This fad came back half a year later.
27) This is a squidhat—forum user Schazer regularly wears them, and has spread this fashion to our smilies.
28 ) This is a panhat—from forumgoer thegreenspark's forum adventure Deadbeat. Many fans of the adventure adopted panhat as a sign of being a fan. Like hobo signs.
29) Jade's oh nooooooo is a common response to a let-down or bad news development here.
30) Right at the beginning of the MSPA Forums era, several suggesters would go around spamming forum adventures with the suggestion to burst through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man Saying "oh yeah." The response was Kool- AId Advennture, by beans, which was a deliberately short adventure telling people in a roundabout way to stop doing that. It's a good example of how to pull off the "You Have to Burn the Trope" trope.
31) When the update with John's bathroom came out, the first thing the Fan Art thread thought to do was to jam a fat president in there. Thus, taft-jamming. Taft enjoyed a month or two of forum popularity, especially with former mod Red Herring backing both that president and Teddy Roosevelt.
32) Huge bitch, bluh bluh. When the vendetta itinerary picture of snowman came out with "huge bitch, bluh bluh" on it, many forumgoers followed suit in editing their avatars to include this.
33) Former mod Marelo has been drawn to cookies from the start. Beginning with Kate Beaton's "Napoleon guiltily eating a Cookie" as an avatar, he was then given the right to dole out reward cookies to forumgoers for their behavior. Then he founded Marelo Bakeries, Inc., which also took up the cupcaking skills of SleepingOrange and donut-frying skills of Wheeeeeeatthins. Now, the bakeries have been abandoned and if anyone mentions Marelo as being a cookie overlord they are definitely behind the times. Especially if Marelo mentions it.
34) This little blob is Sminly, from Yourself's adventure called Sminly. Quite a few forumers modeled their avatars into Sminly's blob-shape after its introduction.
35) Way back in the beginning of the MSPA Forums' history, Problem Sleuth's rude drawings were used to express mock dissatisfaction with others. As a joke.
Also, the one who smells like poo is Dentrala. (Dentrala's the one that said it, not me.)
36) Moe. It's Moe. Nothing Moe're to it, I just wanted to put Moe in there.
37) During the Midnight Crew intermission, people updated their avatars to be either members of the Midnight Crew or of the felt. The character depicted in the vendetta itinerary is from an adventure called Songs We Sing.
38 ) Superfrequency's Overtime adventure garnered the most fanart of any early MSPA Forums-era adventure. Most of it was for Snacktime, the furious vending machine who could easily be drawn in less than a minute with a few rectangles and lines . Superfrequency and SleepingOrange unofficially went head-to-head to see which adventure could garner more fan-art with their simple, easily-drawn characters.
39) The Need for Steed. Andrew got 400 dollars from other people to buy this portrait of questionable quality. (The question though is "should I sell off all of my family and friends into indentured servitude in exchange for it”)
40) Bard quest. The black sheep of MSPAs.
41) This reflects how people often change their avatars to reflect recent updates. More accurately, it reflects how forumgoer Shadow of the Lotus often changes his avatar to reflect recent updates. Included is an edit reflecting the Land of Wind and Shade, the introduction of gallowsCalibrator, and the Soviet hammer-and-sickle (which was briefly an avatar fad, contrasted with the American flag). Also, there's an eyepatch, reflecting how Shadow of the Lotus got his eye cut in kindergarten in a Thanksgiving pilgrimhat papercraft mishap.
42) Bitchin' Shades Snake don't want to hear your words. That's just how he rolls.
Oh here are a few more
43) The Bunny: recently, some forumers have put together an effort to send several bunnies through the .
45) Spades Slick is Everybody: An overused, spent-up joke from facetious IDE/theory posting.
46) WV is an IMP: See above. Even Andrew mocked people saying this one in the main comic.
47) The Bowmask: music team member Michael Bowman (most well-known for Sburban Jungle/Countdown) made an adventure of his own using the POWER OF PHOTOGRAPHY. In it, forumgoer DimJim makes an appearence, but to make it easier to photograph, Bowman gives DimJim a mask of his face. The Bowmask then became an avatar fad to influence Bowman to continue updating.
48 ) Kick Cyz in the Nuts: a crossover-tastic adventure by forumgoer CheezeDeluxe was derailed by people demanding that character Cyz be kicked in the nuts, and the suggestion spread to a popularity equal to that of "Burst through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man." Eventually, this suggestion came to fruition in a thread of its own.
III. The Forapocalypse and After That
In the middle of July 2010, we [or should I say NotASenator] switched forum software from phpbb3 to vBulletin, and rehosted the forums on its own site. There was a three-day lead-up to this called the forapocalypse, with the forum's theme being changed to a funereal black-with-meteors-thundering-down background, and also a timer until the end of the forums was placed at the top of the forums. After the timer ran out, the forums went down, and a few days later, we had a brand new forum! Also, we were given three new mods and a big subforum reorganization (eg: fanart went from MSPA to Art).
After more than a year in this state, give or take a few mods and subforums moved, the Admins put the forums through another, albeit smaller scale change. On October, 04, 2011, it was announced that a few changes would be made. Following the end of the General Chat Thread and after a lot of discussion between the moderators and administrators, it was decided that the MSPA forums were going to be re-focused to better serve as the official hub of the MSPA Fandom. In this change, the General Chat Forum was moved and replaced with Can Town, a forum much more focused on the people behind the posts, rather than any odd topic you had on your mind.Hasn't Happened Yet. In addition, Serious Business, notorious for many outbursts, was completley removed. However, in return we gained the Webcomics General Forum! A few other subforums were moved around, and the Suggestion Box was completley laid to rest and moved into the archives. Finally, to make sure that each member of the forums is as informed as possible, the registration process was revamped so that newbies could be better acquainted with the rules.I don't know if this has happened.
That does it for the lecture portion of our class. If there are any questions, I’ll take them now.
2.2 Questions and Answers
Q: Has _____ ever been a mod?
A: The following are or have been mods at some time from April 2009 to now (listed in the order of induction; if their name is colored, that means they still are a modmin): Andrew, Byron, Betelgeuse, Michael, Tynic, Stephen, Brendon, Phantos, SleepingOrange, WesleyFoxx, AllIsLost, Marelo, Red Herring, Metalbourne, NotASenator, Zuki, Lexxy, Schazer, Avi, Drillgorg, Esrever, Blueberry, Ryan North, ashdenej, and ProfessorLizzard.
Q: Why are the comic's suggestion boxes closed?
A: The medium of Homestuck has changed, and Andrew Hussie has said that they were just getting in the way of story progression. If someone says that there is a crater in the suggestion box, they are referring to the first time it was locked after the end of Act I when John's house was hit by a meteor, and the suggestion box was replaced with a picture of a crater.
Q: Who starts a new thread after an old one is locked?
A: Threads are locked after 100 pages (with the standard 25 posts per page), whoever is up to making the new opening post and keeping it up to date is the forumer who makes the next one, although usually mods are the people who do it. Other threads use the first post on the 100th page rule, where whoever gets post #2476 will start the next one, provided that the post has as much content as it needs.
Q: Why is the IDE/Theory thread called that? What's an IDE?
A: The person who started the first thread misspelled Idea, and it stuck.
Q: What's all this about horses?
A: From Andrew's forumspring: "Ok horses are HILARIOUS. They're like these big snorting muscular monsters with these huge faces, and they often freak out, and we RIDE THEM. That's INSANE." It should be noted that by talking about horses, you are doing very important work.
Q: Is it funny if I say "God Damnit, Nopad?"
A: No! It's rude and hackneyed and the world will hate you just a little more for it.
Q: Someone just posted a link to tweenlust.com. Will I face swift incarceration for opening this link?
A: The tweens in this case refer to Flash's motion tweens. Phantos has a tradition of registering odd domain names, like fancysanta.com.
Q: Somebody just said the name "Bolin" and a veil of deathly silence fell over everyone in the room. Why is that?
A: Bill Bolin was a member of the Homestuck music team. Unfortunately, there were creative differences between him and Andrew/the rest of the music team. The two involved parties parted ways, and all music made by him in flash updates were replaced by other pieces that the music team already had made. They have wished each other the good luck in the future and we'll leave it at that. On the upside, this sort of ushered in the release of the nearly 3-hour-long fifth volume of Homestuck, which is packed with music both featured in and not yet appearing in the comic.
Q: Oh no, I just joined and I can't make a thread on the forums! Did I do something wrong?
A: No, you did not do anything wrong. Due to an influx of spambots, a new user class was added, Wrigglers. These users are only restricted in that, with the exception of the Forum Adventures Cradle, they cannot make threads until they hit 12 posts. After that, just wait about an hour and you will have the ability to make any thread you want, just make sure there isn't already a thread like it
Q: Oh my popcorn there's a huge dumpload of gifs in front of me. What's all this fuss with post milestone celebrations?
A: A time-honoredtradition of theforumsforcelebrationistopostawholebunch ofgifs andjpegs, preferablywithatheme. A post count in itself means nothing. Post milestones are just a good excuse to do a bunch of goofy shit. Like white dudes and Cinco de Mayo.
And according to Byron "People do that wherever the post occurs.”
Q: How often do people get banned?
A: The amount of users that have been banned once could have probably fit in a few egg cartons!* Just use common sense and follow what it says to do in the rules thread. And don't be a flagrant jackass. The influx of them is what has caused the Ban Log to bloat into what it is today.
*This doesn't count spambots because they are not people.
Q: Who is responsible for all of this???
A: Mainly the Inimitable Wheeeeeeathins with some minor input and alterations by Solaris. Wheeeeeeathins also drew the initial banners and kayak and ProfessorLizzard drew the new updated ones.
Q: Last question. I need to know... which dog is the best dog?
A: Phoebe is the best dog.
And that wraps up class! Your homework: be wicked rad.
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
SOME QUESTIONS FOR THE NEWBIES (if you want to answer some of them, all of them, or none of them, all three options are fine)
I will answer them as well.
1) What is your favorite MS Paint Adventures moment?
[S]Descend. Everything came together perfectly in that one flash, so many questions answered, so much tied together that writers lesser than Andrew Hussie would never have been able to make come together...in fact, that's the point Homestuck became my favorite thing. I liked it before, certainly, but that's the point I knew I liked this story the most and no one could ever convince me otherwise. I kid you not, when the flash ended and I saw that up to that point exactly one year of Homestuck had passed, I stood and applauded.
Then I got on the forums and found out it was actually delayed a day for at least some time zones but retroactively posted on the 14th, and I just laughed because that was even more perfect somehow.
2) Who is your favorite MS Paint Adventures character?
Gotta go with Karkat. Why? I actually don't know. I just like the ragey guy.
3) Favorite non-MSPA work of fiction?
*points to avatar*
4) What music do you like?
I am not one to judge between genres, merely between songs. Therefore, I enjoy some classical, some rap, some country, some pop, some rock...but doing the math of amount listened divided by amount liked, I suppose I am most partial to rock.
5) What is your favorite Homestuck album?
Probably the fifth one.
6) What is your favorite MSPA ship?
JohnxRose. Why? Quite selfishly of me, it's wish fulfillment. I am a socially awkward young man obsessed with fantasy and geekdom who is also honest and is blessed/cursed with a good heart. I most prefer the company of young women, dark, slightly cynical one moment and optimistic the next, sarcastic, and witty. Again, wish fulfillment. All other ships I am okay with equally.
7) What is your favorite color?
Orange. Though technically the color-picker qualifies that as Dark Orange, so perhaps it is time I update my colorful vocabulary.
8 ) If you were a food, what kind of food would you be?
Grilled chicken with a slice of lemon on the side, mostly for decoration but edible if you like.
9) Where did you get your avatar, and do you have a link to a bigger version of it?
It's a modified version of Luffy from One Piece that I created myself.

Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
So wait, do I say hello here?
Hi
My name is Toby, I'm 16 years old and I'm Italian, currently living in Dubai.
I have a fair (haha what) number of interests including reading (things like Sophie's World and The Bell Jar, not to mention Diskuwarudo) tennis, gaming and the almighty internet.
I've been reading Homestuck for about half a year (???) now, and I easily see it as one of the better things I've gotten myself into (y)
So yeah cool, hi.
(oh dear god what if I'm posting in the wrong thread I will never get over the embarrassment aaaaaaaaaaaaaahh)
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Here comes another person to make this thread a little more lively.
I've had this account for a while (relatively), and I'm going to finally use it a bit. I'm an 18 year old who just finished his first semester in college studying for a computer science major and a music minor. I'll use that one set of questions up there with one of mine.
1) What is your favorite MS Paint Adventures moment?
I don't really have a favorite moment as much as a memorable moment. The one I remembered the most was the part with the three way showdown with the trolls because of both the buildup and the resolution and also the fact that every discussion of it were all about people saying "She can't do that. She can't possibly be that fast and powerful". It was hilarious to watch.
2) Who is your favorite MS Paint Adventures character?
Going to go with Dave because his pesterlogs are usually hilarious and also because he's one of the best developed characters IMO
3) Favorite non-MSPA work of fiction?
Really love The Legend of Zelda series. Just love pretty much everything about it from the setting to the stories to the gameplay. If your looking for some sort of non-game answer it would be a little difficult because it shifts from time to time.
4) What music do you like?
This is about the only time I would use the word eclectic because that's what I basically am. I really like all the Homestuck albums partially because of all the different styles that are there in each volume. I like a lot of your romantic and baroque style musics a bit and I mostly go by a sort of song by song basis for judging it. My dad personally got me into King Crimson and I've been meaning to listen to a bit more artist like it. I also like quite a bit of jazz especially from a man named Don Ellis if you've heard of him but I kinda just go normally with what sounds appealing at the time.
5) What non-Homestuck things do you like to do.
I really like video games especially ones that are just a little bit older than the current generation. I also like to play music and I currently play at least competently three instruments, the piano, the viola, and the pipe organ with the last one being my best and what I'm studying for my music major. I do like to program and I need to probably do it more than what I currently do and I also like to read and watch some movies from time to time.
6) What is your favorite Homestuck album?
I don't really know probably something like alterniabound or The Felt or something. It changes a bit from time to time.
7) What is your favorite MSPA ship?
I don't really care for the shipping that much but I do like some of the weirder one like JohnxFefari (come on they have never even talked to each other) or the really insane ones like safexBathtub. These are just to laugh at, the romantic aspects of the series are not the main reasons I'm here.
What is your favorite color?
Green I just think it looks pretty
9) If you were a food, what kind of food would you be?
probably some sort of chicken with pasta, preferably pesto.
And that's about it. I hope I haven't come off as anything bad at all. I just think this is a cool forum that I want to be a part of.
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Hello, I'm John and I've been on for a while, lurking and trying to get Pesterchum to work. Now that I'm home and it's working, I figure it's time to introduce myself. If you want to message me on Pesterchum, I'm usually on as abaftEscutcheon and sometimes adumbratedArmament. It's cool to talk to you guys!
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Apparently I derped up and ended up posting on the 7th thread. Lucky me. Anyways, I'm not entirely new here. I've lurked the forums for about 2 years, and I just now took it upon myself to make an account. I'm afraid of commitment.

Man, the new people keep pouring in... no wonder you guys are already up to your 8th thread. Makes me feel like I'm an old member, almost.
I introduced myself last thread; my name is metaphysicalMaestro, and that happens to be the pesterchum account for the Human character I made. You can pester me there, or at technologicalNobility (my general Pesterchum account.) Feel free to add me for general shenanigans or to test a character and their quirk on me. ;D
1) What is your favorite MS Paint Adventures moment? THIS.
2) Who is your favorite MS Paint Adventures character?
It's between Terezi, Rose, and Kanaya, really.
3) Favorite non-MSPA work of fiction? Dresden Codak, for the art and awesome story arcs. Definitely worth a read. There's not really any set order of events; there's story arcs and little tidbits of stuff in between, so it's not supposed to make too much sense chronologically.
Rice Boy, because EVERYTHING HE DOES IS AWESOME. Seriously, check them out. Start with Rice Boy, then go to Order of Tales, then catch up on Vattu. The short stories there are pretty awesome as well.
4) What music do you like?
I like a lot of stuff, but I stick to Techno, Dubstep, and NIN. Helps keep me motivated.
5) What's your typing quirk?
Occasionally, I tend to over-punctuate, by means of commas and such. Otherwise, I type pretty normally, really.
6) What is your favorite Homestuck album?
Can't decide. All the albums.
7) What is your favorite MSPA ship?
Terezi and Dave, the two as a pair crack me up.
What is your favorite color?
Dark Blue.
9) If you were a food, what kind of food would you be?
Cheese and Apple Cider.

Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Hi, I'm Sci (Peter), 30yo from London, England. Someone mentioned Homestuck to me in passing a few months ago and I then spent a few night reading it through from the start, because once I start reading something I kinda have to see it through to the end in one go. :P Been really enjoying it and cackling out loud to myself on numerous occasions, as well as being reduced to entirely manly tears a few times (*cough-Cascade-cough*).
Finally decided to join the forums after finding one of the forum-comic without realising, the following them back here and getting the lightbulb come on over my head. o_o

Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Greetings, people focused upon computer screens and at the moment specifically at my rambling, bumbling sentence of text. I'm Fen and decided to join the forums after much silent lurking. You can blame the "What is your "Hero" title?" topic for my presence.
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
1) What is your favorite MS Paint Adventures moment?
My favorite moment would be [S] Wake. That flash just managed to give me so many goosebumps. The soundtrack, the god tiering. All of it. Add that Tavros died, and he was my least favourite troll.
2) Who is your favourite MS Paint Adventures character?
Definatly Vriska, sadly. She died, however. That won't ever stop me from loving her hah. Of the living characters, I guess Alpha Bro. He's just such a great character already. Can't wait to finally hear more of him.
3) Favorite non-MSPA work of fiction?
Hmm, well I would have to say Chrono trigger. Damn, that game really caught me in its amazing story line. The art, the story, the music. All of it was amazing. I played trough it two times in days of non-stop playing it.
4) What music do you like?
Very limited sadly, my favourite music would be Avant-garde metal. Bands like Diablo Swing Orchestra are the coup de grace of the music industry in my opinion. Outside of that, I really enjoy the music from Homestuck. The OST of Cave Story is amazing as well. I've been listening to it non-stop ever since I started playing that silly indie game. I tend to enjoy most game music. Add that I also like music like techno and dubstep, but I don't tend to listen to that sort of music that often.
5) What non-Homestuck things do you like to do.
As most people of our generation, I enjoy playing video games. Outside of that, I'm quite an internet person. You can find me in every farthest reaches of the web. I'm not much of a content creator though, I can't make music, nor make art and such. I find it shameful. But I have my reasons.
6) What is your favorite Homestuck album?
Alternia, really shows the brilliance that is the music of Toby Radiation Fox.
7) What is your favorite MSPA ship?
JohnVriska. I'm not a shipper at all, except for that couple. They just seem perfect to me, add that Vriska's showing of red feelings was rather cute. Shame that Vriska is dead though......but outside of that. I don't ship.
What is your favorite colour?
Tyrian purple. This isn't because of Homestuck. But because I'm a historian. I love the Byzantine empire. And their royal colour is Tyrian purple. That's why I like it. It shows power, wealth, dominance.
9) If you were a food, what kind of food would you be?
Something rare most probably. I don't know. Probably sweet, all girls always call me sweet. Perhaps something like toffee. I'm quite sticky hah.
10) What's your typing quirk?
I strife to write in perfect English. This includes a good use of punctuation marks. Words spelled in the correct way. And that sort of stuff. I also refuse to write in American English. You'll never see me write colour as color. I also never use the word Awesome for that reason. Because I hate that bastardy word with a passion.
I'm doing my best to have even decent visits to the MSPA forums. But understand that this is a creepy big place. And I'm not much of a forumite.
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Hi, guys, Ana here! I'm sixteen, love writing/drawing/reading/video games and other shenanigans which I can't think of at this moment and which you're probably not at all interested in.
I never know what to say on these Introduction threads, but I figured I should at least make you aware of my existence. So I shall keep it short. See you around!
PS: Wishing you all a merry Christmas... or a great Sunday if you're not celebrating. (:
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Oh hello. I'm Dimitry, this is a new username I go under but really I am MegaFire hue.
Anyway sure I go to a small forum for a company that makes freeware games...but meh it's tiny forum. If anyone here is familiar with SMBZ then I used to go to VGLan but...must never speak of that again. Oh and I love to do VA's! Contact me for any VA because I love doing that also I like to draw...pretty badly on the computer.
Now to answer those silly questions:
1) What is your favorite MS Paint Adventures moment?
Everything with WV, he's so bloody awesome.
2) Who is your favorite MS Paint Adventures character?
Karkat, well...generic fav i guess. Equius BECAUSE MOTHER FUCKING STRONG!!!!!! Also WV, he's magical.
3) Favorite non-MSPA work of fiction?
Um...no I dont like that kind of stuff because they are bad. Homestuck is good because of that AMAZING weird plot shit and whatnot. It takes great skill to do what Andrew does.
4) What music do you like?
Classical, Techno, Europop, Russpop and parody raps.
5) What's your typing quirk?
Um...idk?
6) What is your favorite Homestuck album?
The Wanderers or Album 7
7) What is your favorite MSPA ship?
The right ones...like the ones that happen...because their is obviously a reason for it. I guess thats why I hate fans who do the most retarded ships like TavrosxRose WTF they dont even talk.
8 ) What is your favorite color?
Dark red or Black. Maybe even candy red.
9) If you were a food, what kind of food would you be?
Grilled Chicken prob....maybe with some chips on the side (the fried kind)
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Ok fine, I'll do this. I am known around here as The_Unoriginal, for those of you that cannot look to the left.
1) What is your favorite MS Paint Adventures moment?
The Fruity Rumpus Asshole Factory. Hidden in those walls of text is some of the funniest banter I have ever read.
2) Who is your favorite MS Paint Adventures character?
Andrew Hussie, despite his total lack of control regarding his creation.
3) Favorite non-MSPA work of fiction?
Ummm... movies? I don't like picking favorites that much.
4) What music do you like?
Not country. And not Emo/Screamo
5) What's your typing quirk?
If I ever get one?
"for some reSON, YOU Cnnot stop missing a certIN KEY ON YOUR KEYBOrd"
6) What is your favorite Homestuck album?
Alterniabound
7) What is your favorite MSPA ship?
The Chicago Overcoat.
Okay, okay: This isn't my strong suit. There was that theory about Gamzee/Kanaya now that Kan is "dead." That sounds interesting
8 ) What is your favorite color?
Indigo
9) If you were a food, what kind of food would you be?
The kind that people do not want to eat.
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
Hey all! The name's Riah, I'm a 20-year-old college student and just recently started reading Homestuck. My younger brother has been reading it since the beginning and finally got me to read it a couple weeks ago. I read all of Homestuck in two weeks. All of it. And my conclusion is that Homestuck and its fandom are amazing! I'm pretty excited to be here. : )
So here are some things:
1) What is your favorite MS Paint Adventures moment?
[S]WV: Ascend. It's one of the early moments, but the entire animation just gave me chills: WV's flight across post-apocalyptic earth, the meteor impacts, as well as the guardians being generally awesome. It's what made me really begin to love homestuck. Not to mention Explore is one of my favorite Homestuck tracks, it was just so fitting. I listened to it repeatedly for about half an hour after first hearing it. xP
2) Who is your favorite MS Paint Adventures character?
This is really difficult because I love so many of the characters, especially most of the characters still alive (luckily for me). I'll go with Terezi though, partly because I am a Libra, and I feel that I have a similar personality to her. Karkat, Sollux, Kanaya and all the kids are pretty awesome as well.
3) Favorite non-MSPA work of fiction?
I'm quite fond of the manga Fairy Tail, as well as the Zelda series.
4) What music do you like?
I like a lot of alternative rock and folk (I Coldplay), as well as older music like The Beatles and... actually it's mostly just The Beatles. I've recently begun to get into 8-bit music as well (initially because of the game Cave Story), or anything pretty on the piano, violin or fiddle.
5) What's your typing quirk?
I repeattttt consonants (sometimes illogically) when I get excitedddd.
6) What is your favorite Homestuck album?
I still have to get through a lot of the Homestuck music (there're so many awesome tracks!) but so far I really dig Vol. 1-4. Especially Explore and Black.
7) What is your favorite MSPA ship?
KarkatxTerezi, mainly because it's adorable! I like it whenever John or Dave bring up the topic to Karkat and he gets really defensive/vague. I'm not a super dedicated shipper though, and I will essentially like anything if there's good art for it. :P
I'm also very partial to the friendship between Karkat and Sollux.
8 ) What is your favorite color?
Blue, green, and pretty much all combinations of the two. Especially teal, partially because I just like the sound of the word 'teal'.
9) If you were a food, what kind of food would you be?
Something sweet. Maybe Raspberries. Or cinnamon, if that counts as a food. Or tea! Indecisionnn.
Re: Introduction Thread 8 (Our Curiosity is Awaiting Your Arrival)
I haven't been on in months, so I'll re-introduce myself as I feel obligated to do after long absences.
So hi! I'm Acey, I'm 18 (19 in February!), and I'm going to college in San Francisco.
1) What is your favorite MS Paint Adventures moment?
The one in my avatar. I just about cried because I ship it so hard.
Also, [S] Make Her Pay and [S] Wake because I am incredibly fond of Aradia (see below) and like when she does awesome things.
And of course, [S] Cascade has a place in my heart, since I stayed up all night to watch it! :P
2) Who is your favorite MS Paint Adventures character?
Aradia is my preshus babbu favorite, but I'm also really fond of Terezi. Out of the kids? John, without a doubt!
3) Favorite non-MSPA work of fiction?
Not sure.
4) What music do you like?
I'm a huge TMBG fan, and I listen to a variety of music (though most of it does fall under the header of "alternative").
5) What's your typing quirk?
I sometimes type non-questions with question marks at the end?
6) What is your favorite Homestuck album?
AlterniaBound, I think. (Rex Duodecim Angelus FTW!)
7) What is your favorite MSPA ship?
*points to avatar* Sollux/Aradia warms my heart in ways it probably shouldn't. I also really like Kanaya/Rose, Dave/Terezi, and John/Vriska, and I'm 0kay with most other ships. Except Eridan/Feferi and Equius/Aradia 'cause I'm majorly squicked by stalkerishness?
8 ) What is your favorite color?
Purple!
9) If you were a food, what kind of food would you be?
I'M A PRICKLY PEAR Probably a durian or the aforementioned PRICKLY PEAR because they're awful and disgusting and a bad person on the outside, but sweet on the inside.
