Minestuck - Attempting to put some Homestuck in Minecraft (CODERS NEEDED!)

    Original Minecraft Forum Link

For quite a while, I've been searching for Minecraft mods that have to do with Homestuck. Honestly, I've found two or three. None of them are playable on the newest build. And the best-looking, here, is nowhere near complete. It's also very game changing. So, I decided to begin working on a mod of my own. This is where you come in. We need coders and spriters, and maybe someone to help with the planning.

I have a lot of the features planned out. There should be a few new mobs (Derse/Prospit soldiers, Imps, Salamanders, and more, hopefully). Grist will play a huge part, and will be dropped from every mob just like experience. Lastly, an entire new crafting system for the new weapons and items.
Here's what we have so far:

-Grist: Any destroyed creature/animal drops Grist (there's a set amount, and a 'bonus' amount that they might drop). Certain Grists are worth more than others, too. For example, one red Grist is worth five blue Grist, and you can craft one red Grist using five blue. This is useful for storing it and for those really big items.

-Cruxtruder: Grist is used to power the Cruxtruder. It doesn't take very much Grist to produce one Cruxite Dowel. However, you can't go to the Totem Lathe Yet because...

-Punch Designix: This was the hardest thing to come up with, and will probably be the hardest to code. In the comic, it's used to take the codes of items and make them into punched cards. Simple as that, but that's incredibly confusing in Minecraft, so I came up with a better idea.
Upon using the Punch Designix, a GUI comes up that looks similar to a 3x3 Crafting Grid. Some blocks, when placed into this other end, yield a punch card that you can later bring to the Totem Lathe.
If you're wondering how you get the new items, fear not. The weaker versions of the new items (say, the sledgehammer and the cane) can be created naturally. The powered up versions can be created using Grist later, by fusing one of the original items with some newer components to create the cards here. That's why there's a 3x3 Crafting grid. You'll be losing the items you use, though. This'll be explained in depth a bit later.

-Totem Lathe: You're near the end now. Clicking this opens a GUI similar to a furnace. You put your Cruxite Dowel at the top, and your Punch Card at the bottom. It will create a Carved Cruxite Dowel, and represents a certain item. You can use it as many times as you want, so don't make more than one for the same item. I also wouldn't mix them up with other Cruxite Dowels, because the only way to tell them apart is the curve in the sprite.

-Alchemiter: The last thing. Another furnace-like GUI. You put your Carved Cruxite Dowel on the top, and a stack of Grist at the bottom. The rarer and better the item, the more Grist it will cost to create. It doesn't take long, but you should make sure enough Grist is available.

So, everything's easily integrated into the game. It's nothing huge like a new dimension, simply a new way to get new items, and a great reason to grind enemies to duplicate your rarest items.

Examples of using the 'SBURB Method.'
    Making a Diamond.
It all starts and ends with the Grist you have, so make sure you have enough. You head over to the Cruxtruder to create one Cruxite Dowel. Then you head over to the Punch Designix and insert your diamond. It will cost you one Diamond, but it'll create one Diamond Punch Card. You bring the Diamond Punch Card and the Cruxite Dowel to the Totem Lathe, and the Cruxite Dowel is turned into a Carved Cruxite Dowel (CCD) (and you get to keep the Diamond Punch Card). Then you place the CCD into the Alchemiter (along with the appropriate amount of Grist). Within a few seconds, the Grist will have been converted into one Diamond. The CCD can be used as many times as you want for infinite Diamonds (as long as you have enough Grist).

Creating one of the new items. (Sickle/Regisickle)
Everything starts at the same place, of course. A sickle is crafted using a stick and three iron ingots.

    Code:
    [I][I][_]
    [_][_][I]
    [_][S][_]
=Where S represents wooden stick and I represents an Iron Ingot. For the record, it has the power of an iron sword and yields extra wheat when using it as a farming tool.
So, you want to create a Regisickle. You go collect a Cruxite Dowel, and head over to the Punch Designix. However, it's here that it gets complicated. At the Punch Designix, you place the Sickle into the crafting area, and you also toss two blocks of Obsidian in. Instead of a card for the Sickle (you would have gotten one if you just put the sickle in), you got a card for the Regisickle. After that, you just bring the card to the Alchemiter and everything remains straightforward.

    Planned items:
Weapons: (there are -s by the objects that can be hand-crafted.)
    Caledscratch
    Scarlet Ribbitar
    Regisword
    -Steel Hammer
    Pogo Hammer
    Telescopic Sassacrusher
    Fear No Anvil
    Pop-a-matic Vrillyhoo Hammer
    Warhammer of Zillyhoo
    -Knitting Needles
    Needlewands
    Thorns of Oglogoth
    -Hunting Rifle
    Girl's Best Friend
    Ahab's Crosshairs
    -Daggerlance
    -Sickle
    Homes Smell Ya Later
    Regisickle
    -Claw Gloves
    Blue Claw Gloves
    -Cane
    Spear Cane
    Dragon Cane
    Fluorite Octet
    -Deuce Clubs
    Other Items
    Grist (Colours/types undefined so far)
    Blocks
    Grist Block
    Cruxtruder
    Punch Designix
    Totem Lathe
    Alchemiter

    Planned Features.
-Quest Trees: Created by mixing a sapling with a Cruxite Dowel in the Alchemy System. Growing this baby will yield a solid blue tree that does not yield anything when broken, except for the center block, which drops a consumable Quest Item. Using it start the meteor shower, and make Medium gates usable. Something like this, anyways.
-Meteor Showers: Involves two things. One: retextures the sky (red with a large meteor sun) during the day, and possibly triggers some event that begins to rain meteors. Not sure how, or what they'll look like. I know it can be done (a modder has done it before, and maybe we can ask them to borrow the code).
-Mobs: Including (but not limited to) imps, salamanders, ogres, Derse (soldiers, Jack, Queen, and King), Prospit (same).
-Achievements. Still in the idea stage, but feasible. A main idea being crafting a bucket and getting the achievement 'PUT THAT THING AWAY.' Credit to a user on Pesterchum. I will go through the logs later and find his actual name.
There's a bit more but none comes to mind.

Things that May Happen in The Future?
Mobs! Special abilities on items! The sky's the limit. (Or, more specifically, how good are coders are is the limit.)

This sound's like a great idea. I've done a few Homestuck-inspired texture packs, but nothing in the realm of coding.

Look at all the arts I have. I make props and other interesting things.

While actually having a coder would be awesome, having a few more artists can't be a problem if you'd like to make some contributions, even if it's just a sprite or two.

I may know a coder for this, and I can most definitely texture. I'm trying to learn coding... but this is a little beyond my abilities!

I know a little java and I already fucked around a little with minecraft code. I can do item and block. Probably could learn to modify map creation to include new block/ore. I was thinking about homestuck mod for a while but never had the time and talent to do it myself. I would like to help any way I can. Anyway, I'm really interrested.

This would be brilliant, thanks. And all in all, most of the coding shouldn't be too difficult; a few weapons, a few mobs, and a few blocks. The blocks would be the hardest, with the Gui. However, whatever you can do to help!

Someone who knows some java! I don't think we have any map modding to do; just some little bits with weapons. The new GUIs can come later when we have some more coders. It's great to know you're interested, and whatever you can do is great.

I'm working on some mock-ups on how to craft some of the simpler weapons that I'm going to post soon.

Ha cool, I'm setting up all the things I need to work. I haven't modded minecraft since 1.6 or something. But I tell you I'm not an experimented coder, I only have basic knowledge of java (but this is a great opportunity to learn more). Anyway, I think I'm fine for what you're doing.

Hopefully all we'll need early on is basic knowledge to start off, and we'll get better as we go along.

    Mock-ups!

    The Sickle:
A simple weapon that is used to create a more powerful version of the Sickle (such as the Homes Smell Ya Later or Regisickle) later on. It has the same power as an iron sword, but when used on wheat, it yields extra produce or seeds.
A simple idea that I think works for the extra 1 Iron cost. It should be pretty easy to code when we get there, I hope.

Can the textures stay 16x16 for the MSPaint kind of feel? I already made some textures of 1. Fear No Anvil 2. The Beginning Sickle 3. Warhammer of Zillyhoo 4. Caledscratch 5. Terezi's Cane I'll post them here in a second.

They are 16x16, actually. I think I know what you mean, though. I guess we'll see which way works best. We could have a vote when we have a few sprites.

I'm also making a whole Homestuck texture pack, which replaces swords with those weapons.

Okay, okay... Hm. Well, a few things about the first few things. Terezi's Cane - this is the one with the Dragon Head on it, right? If you can make the dragon head look a bit sharper, like the following image.

The Caledscratch: I've only got one thing I'd like to add on. Can you add some shading? This seems a bit naggy, but I'm a shading freak. Just a nasty habit.
For Fear No Anvil: Really, I think it looks great. The only thing that bothers me a little bit is that it looks flat. I hope this shouldn't be too hard to fix.
I hope that doesn't sound like a list of complaints and demands.

No it doesn't sound like that. I would be glad to fix it. With the Fear no Anvil it is REALLY Hard to make it less flat because of the 16x16 box, the handle would have to be really short, concealing the blade in your hand.... Also with the Caldescratch that shouldn't be too hard. Dragon Cane will be made sharper, and an alternate normal cane will be made. I can make other weapons too, just ask and give me an image to base it off of (PLEASE!)

I can understand Fear No Anvil. Maybe I'll try something later. For the Dragon Cane: just to be clear, I meant the head, yeah? Thanks once again.

Things you could try to do if you want: (Regular) Steel Hammer, Pogo Hammer, Ahab's Crosshairs, and a Deuce Club. That should be good to start.

Caledscratch is gorgeous. I like it quite a lot.
I've changed your canes around a tad. Not by much - I just fixed the colours on the upper ends of the cane and messed around a bit with the heads. It was harder than I had originally thought.

Pogo Hammer and Deuce Club anyone?

Pogo hammer was hard with the limited space. :S
    Also they look good

Ahab's Crosshair is insanely hard, as you hold it straight, and the point for holding a weapon by default is in the bottom left corner. You would effectively be shooting at the sky!

I like the Deuce Club. The Pogo Hammer seems a bit wide, but that should be easy to fix.
And don't worry about Ahab's Crosshairs. I'll take care of it. If you'd like just choose any thing from the list, and find it on the wiki.

I know enough Java to be of assistance in that area. I've never checked the Minecraft sourcecode beyond basic block editing/adding, but I could certainly look into the more complex classes.
I like your idea for implementing the alchemy system with minimal effort. Ive been having similar thoughts for some time, and the only concept I truly object to is the ability to duplicate diamonds, for obvious reasons.

Before we go much further in this, it would be prudent to further outline what these items will do in game. Assuming that they should be more or less up to par with their canon power levels, how difficult will the new mobs need to be to compensate?

Another thing: Though it would be easier to make them blocks, I feel that the best way to represent the various machines properly would be to make them entities.

(Huh. So this is what posting feels like. Cool.)

Someone else who'd love to help out would be absolutely fantastic. Especially if you can try to help out with some of the more complex stuff, which seemingly none of us can do so far.
About the alchemy process: I tried my best to keep it true to the comic without going overboard for coders, or for people actually trying to use the mod. I can understand your objection to duplicating diamonds, but just to make sure; these things are obviously going to cost a lot of Grist to create, and you lose your original diamond. It might be like, say, farming Endermen for Ender Pearls to craft into diamonds, for example. Either way, it's still an idea, in development stages. I can see why it can be milled, though. We can take it out and not even use old blocks in the alchemy process at all if need be.

I think this is a good idea. I can go through the new weapons list and give each one a set ability and possibly an average power level compared to other weapons. Some of the new mobs will be average/easy (like imps), but some of the larger 'ogre imps' would be a lot harder to kill. Another idea I quickly went over in my mind was the idea of another dimension, like Derse or Prospit, perhaps, that contain some of the stronger enemies. Really, though, it's starting to seem cliché with newer and bigger mods and I don't want to have to get involved unless need be. Maybe spawning dungeon-like things that contain stronger Homestuck-related enemies? Open to debate in the future.

Entities? Can you even make them entities? It would make it soo much easier to make the textures for certain things and stick to the original design... I like this idea and want to keep it.

(And yeah I know I had the same feeling.)
