Thread: The RPG Homebrew Extravanganza Thread

I feel like "agility" usually covers defense. Usually. Although we could math out how "armor/defense" is calculated.

Armor could be Burliness? But is that too close to BiblioBrawling?

I suppose agility could cover defense, but I feel Briskness covers too many stats already. But I'm OK with Briskness covering defense too.

But if defense is its own stat, then BURLINESS is a good name for it.

As far as I could tell from the first post, genres are more like races. But that doesn't really make all that much sense. Maybe sub genres are more like prestige classes?

So if genres are races, do they look different? Or is everyone basically human?

    Wait, what am I saying.

Genres are races, Subgenres are classes.

    Sorry for misleading you.

But yeah, there are no subclasses.

EDIT: Namboto, all the races are different in a way, but most of them are humanoid. Read the Races section of the OP for more info.

Major genres are races. More specialized genres are classes. Characters will get abilities from both.

They all look generally human, but do look different enough to classify as separate races. I'm working on fleshing some out.

As far as stats go I think we have our core:
    BRAWLING (attack)
    BRISKNESS (agility/dexterity)
    BOOKSMARTS (Intelligence)
    BEAUTY (Charisma)
    BULWARKNESS (Defense)

Armor bonuses will be granted by books (of course.) My thoughts are that combat goes attack roll + attack bonus v. defence roll + defence bonus.

As far as fluff style goes, ch00_baka was on the right track, though it could have used a touch up here or there (Like how they don't really acknowledge the power of the Librarians or whatnot.) Here's crackfic for another example.

"Some people are divorced from reality. Crackfic readers have not only divorced reality, but they've stalked around reality's house for six months before breaking in, brutally stabbing reality, and then painting joyful pastoral scenes with reality's blood. They are without sense, sanity, and nothing is sacred to them. They fill in the margins of society: the crazy neighbor, the insane hermit, the babbling hobo, the chaotic anarchist commune. If you see someone wearing a purple plad tuxedo, a spiked iron cup, and a sombrero ringed with freshly-killed smelt, they're probably a crackficcer. Bonus points if they speak entirely in non sequitors and are married to a potted plant. Crackfic readers focus on BOOKSMARTS and BEAUTY: if you're going to be crazy, you might as well know how to act it properly. Crackficcers are tolerated by the Librarians and Council of Pages, if only for the fact that they are generally harmless in their madness, though the Staff do not approve of their rampant disrespect for logical story construction."

Well, combat seems easy enough to play, but I suppose it could go:

Attack roll + Attack bonus v. Agility roll + Agility bonus
If TOTAL ATTACK > TOTAL AGILITY, that means the attack has connected, and then you can use:
Attack roll + Attack bonus v. Defense roll + defense bonus

If TOTAL ATTACK < TOTAL AGILITY, the attack has been avoided.

    Seems easy enough.

Yup. And if TOTAL ATTCK is more than TOTAL DEFENCE, it does full damage. If it isn't, half damage, or maybe something else depending on what defensive book you have equipped.

How would full damage be calculated?

Attack roll surplus, plus whatever attack book you're using, I would think.

Ah, ok, that would make sense.

So when TOTAL ATTACK < TOTAL DEFENCE, attack is blocked, right?

Either that, or damage reduction. Which do you think works better?

    Science Fiction: (Description attempt ?)

"Look to the future. What do you see? Most of us see nothing but Science Fiction(ers) see possibilities, endless possibilities. They see the now that isn't yet to come, but the now that could be one day. They look to the Librarians for knowledge, seeking to further their BOOKSMARTS and ended up products of their vast imaginations. Their bodies are humanoid in shape, but many have forgotten the shackles of a mortal coil. They vary in appearance, but usually are part robotic or vaguely alien in appearance. Some have completely forsaken a human form, downloading their minds onto advanced book apparatuses. Regardless of their appearance, they are all unified in their vision for the future, and they've come to make it a reality."

    /end plausibly wrong attempt.

I think damage reduction would make it more balanced.

Else, you'd have to go through 2 checks to pass an attack. Basically, when TOTAL ATTACK < TOTAL DEFENSE:
TOTAL ATTACK minus DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOTAL ATTACK AND DEFENSE = damage done

I'm voting for horror readers to have a slight blue tint then. The darker the subgenre they enjoy, the darker the tint. (although I'd think that lovecraftians might be greenish?)

Nope (Chuck testa). That is a very right attempt. Adding to OP.

    EDIT: Damage reduction it is.

Wait, so how will Readers gain skills? Do they have a selection to choose from each level? Or will it be a set skill every level? Or an entirely different skill progression?

Well, there are three types of skills: ones you get from your race at the beginning, ones you get from your class as you level up, and then ones granted by books.

I'm thinking class skills would either be a pool where you pick one every level, or a standard level progression where you always get X skill at Y level.

Or we could have it every level, you pick 1 of 2 skills available each level. This will mean that we will have to design a lot of skills though.

Also, level cap. What level will that be?
