Okay, so this is now an AU that is actually happening.

Poor Yellow Karkat, stuck between the Emperor who has so much control over him and the rebels who absolutely despise him for supporting the regime despite being so low on the hemospectrum. He is absolutely amazing at what he does, and that's exactly the reason he got himself stuck in this situation in the first place.

Equius, on the other hand, is extremely secure in his position. He has a completely ruthless seadweller as his second in command who is also extremely fond of what she gets to do and he has control over one of the most powerful psychics and best hackers on the entire planet. Despite this, he does not just lounge around enjoying himself, no, Equius prefers a hands-on approach to ruling his empire.

Writing the boasts of these two was extremely entertaining and I think I did a pretty good job of it, too.

Equius is definitely a troll who is in charge because he takes charge. He may believe that blood makes him superior, but he knows he has the power to back it up with all by himself. Considering that Vriska is his second in command, the belief that highbloods really are the stronger ones is not entirely misguided.

Gamzee has been on the run from Equius for a while now, and the fact that Equius wants to track him down on his own has left him with a lot of freedom to move about. He is not so much the leader of the rebellion as he is the figurehead. And he doesn't mind that in the least. He's just playing his part in the bigger game, man. A game that is far greater than you and I. It's fucking miraculous is what it is.

There are a couple of different ways to get the numbers, Reign. Here's the two I used.

First is the series. In summary, whenever you have a collection of different choices, and you want to see how many possible pairs there are, you add up all the numbers UP TO one less than the amount of choices. So, I added the series of 1...255 (all the numbers up to ONE LESS THAN the total amount of characters), which gets 32640. That number is every possible pair combination, EXCEPT FOR, those of two like characters (Canon-Karkat to Canon-Karkat, or Yellow-Tavros to Yellow-Tavros, or what have you). Then, to remove all of the canon-conversations (like Canon-John to Canon-Jade, or any other canon-to-canon conversation), you multiply 16 (every character) by 15 (every other character). It's not 16*16 because we already removed all of the Self-To-Self possibilities, so every character has only the other fifteen characters as a canon conversation. 15*16 is 240, so the total is 32640-240, for a total of 32400.

The other way doesn't use series; by multiplying 256*256 (every character by every character), you get 65536. Remove the 256 self-to-self conversations, and you get 65280. Divide it by 2 (because, as people have noted, every pair shows up twice in the chart; for instance, Canon-Karkat to Maroon-John shows up at both [Maroon-John Down, Canon-Karkat Across], and at [Canon-Karkat Down, Maroon-John Across]). When you've divided it by 2, you get 32640. Then you have to remove the Canon Conversations using the same method as above; subtract 15*16 from the whole.

So either way you end up with 32400 possible conversations that are not Canon-To-Canon or Self-To-Self.

Alright i spot the difference. You didn't account for duplicate canon-canon conversations already being removed by virtue of being duplicates. That's why i used the 1...15 and subtracted THAT from 1...255

Oh, okay, I see. 15*16 accounts for the Self-To-Self conversations, but not the doubles of the canon-conversations. So rather than subtracting 240, I should have subtracted 120? Which makes the total 32520, instead, right?

I was so close. SO VERY, VERY CLOSE.

Gonna be entirely honest, I was just going by ArcFour's original projections for the base number. Then I subtracted all of the talking-to-yourself convos, less the canon ones that were already marked. I thought I had it right, but if 32,520 is the right number then okay.

Also, Aldaris, I'll look through the thread real quick for indigo John / brown Jade after I update the OP. I think I need to clean up the chart a little anyway. Pretty sure some of those Terezi/Terezis shouldn't be there.

Come on Raikonos, you have the chart right there. Just count up all the little squares that aren't black, one by one, then divide by two and there's your number. And as soon as you're done you can just report back and tell us whether it's 32,520 or 32,400.
