They only spawned in 1/10 chunks or something like that, which made them extremely rare.
Also by boss fight I meant the dragon, if it wasnt clear.

But that's just a lava pool intersecting a ravine? That is a remarkably long lava pool, I wouldn't be surprised if the monkeyed with the terrain gen to get that effect.

The terraingen does multiple passes to get the desired effect
The pass that generates ravines/caves/etc is before the pass that fills air blocks under y=16 with lava.
So that isn't actually a feature, just a cool side-effect.
e: And yeah, it's even in 1.8

You know what would be cool? If the first chunk loaded in The End look exactly like on in the Overworld. And the ones outside of it would progress into Enderness slowly. That's a really good way to create horror! (Except that everyone would know the trick)

I think the enderdragon should have a cool boss battle theme! Just think about it: the music might come from it, so that it only plays when he's around and therefore at the right time/with the right intensity, it probably is also convenient for the coders rather than playing an actual background music (due to the possibility to overlap it by playing a disk in a juke box), and one of its super-rare drops could be the disk that contains said boss theme! I mean, we already have creepers dropping disks... that's not weird right?
