The Binding of Isaac: A Journey into the Pits of Some Scary Dark Places

Isaac is a young boy who lives alone with his religious mother. After hearing voices from God, Isaac's mother begins restricting her son's freedoms in order to save him from sin. After a while, however, God tells her that the only way to show that she is truly loyal to him is to kill Isaac. Isaac overhears his mother's plot through the door and decides to make a quick dash into the basement in order to save his own life.

The game is a randomly-generated dungeon crawler, so each play-through will be completely different. There are dozens of items which upgrade Isaac's health, abilities, and his main weapon (his own tears). There are over 40 achievements that also unlock new items and characters.

The game is designed to encourage multiple playthroughs, especially since you are going to die. You are going to die a lot, and dying will result in the game restarting. Normally, this might be frustrating, but the game is designed to be enjoyable even if you don't make it to fight the boss (you will need to beat the game several times if you want to get 100% I might add).

If I were to make a quick-start guide to playing the game and a short FAQ it would be in this post

I would describe the game succinctly as Zelda: The Roguelike.

There are many secrets and many cool things. It's well worth the five dollars and more.

Best item is My Little Unicorn. It has saved my ass many times in the past, though hopefully buying the Bible in the store will make it appear in secret areas and such, gotta get that achievement you know.

My favorite item that I've found so far is the Cube of Meat, because if you get more than one it starts evolving into different forms that assist you in different ways. It's pretty neat, but i dunno if there's any more than three stages of it.

There are in fact five stages.

I was lukewarm on unicorn since it's not super effective on bosses, but it's a great 'panic' item to clear tricky rooms.

The best tip I think you can give is that You Can Bomb Everything.

Depends, usually I can halve a boss's life bar quite easily with Unicorn because the strategy for it is to just ram the boss over and over again to rack up damage.

Most of my go-to items are the ones you get in the Devil's pact. Lord of the Pit was nice, before I unlocked Transcendence/the Noose on the somethingth runthrough. The Nail is just beastly, seeing as it lets you smash rocks and up damage by a truckton in one room, plus it nets you two soul hearts. If you get a battery as well it's kind of a cruise to the finish.

The Cube of Meat's also all right, but I think I prefer the halo of flies. More of them, and easier to get (from both the slot machines, and one of the pills. Speaking of which, the Pill Bottle (+Battery/PhD optional) is also pretty fun provided you don't get a truckton of Dmg/speed/tearsdown pills.

If you get the PhD it doesn't matter if you get negative pills though :0

I have barely unlocked or received any items yet, so I don't have a favorite.

Ooh, I just won Skatole from the vendor in the Arcade, and would recommend it if you've got the patience/cash on hand.

Homing flies turn into regular flies, which fly towards you then stop at a certain distance. The brown ones chase you instead of shooting, and it could be my imagination but the fat black exploding ones that bounce off the walls move slower.

The lemon is overpowered against the final boss to the point that it glitches it.

I thought I heard that had been patched out?

I got cocky at first trying to thread the needle in between bullet waves when my shmup instincts kicked in, but Isaac's head is so big that is makes it difficult to judge where his hitbox is.

As much as I want to see the game in decent quality I'm just going to switch over to low so I can stop pretending I'm awesome and play the game at full speed.

Followup tip: The secret room with a free powerup/lots of coins that you get to if you use the moon card? There's one on every level. Just bomb the walls till you find it.

Maybe everyone already knows that one though.

I like the laser eye..... though I'm rather horrible at this (heck, i already lost on the first room I entered ffs).
one of my usually frequent item is the x-ray glasses which are nice, considering you never need bombs or guess to find the secret room, then again the treasure map can almost do the same.
I personally like the book of shadows a lot, maybe not the best "item" but for some reason I like the invulnerability.

Diablo was THE first thing I thoguht of when I saw this, due to the randomly-generated gameplay.

secret rooms can be usually found if there are three other rooms adjacent to the secret room

After hearing Superfrequency beat this on like, her second try, I want to sacrifice her to the dark gods of video gaming and eat her heart.

I am fairly proud of my ability to play games like these, and yet my number of deaths is a fairly large number.

Sidenote: I found a way to install The Binding of Isaac on every computer on the school.
Let's wait to see what HAPENS.

I was playing this last night, went into a shop only for it to actually be Greed. Had like a heart and a half left, so I just popped My Little Unicorn and started running into him. And then it ran out, when he literally had no visible health left, and I died. Was pretty upset, but such is life.

The strategy is to just keep ramming a boss's stupid ass as fast as you can...until it's over.

Yippie a much better thread for a stunning game! That I happen to suck at, sometimes, but then others I just destroy it. I love everything about this game.

    Uuuuugh

I really shouldn't even be spending five dollars on games right now

But between Superfrequency linking me a video of it and this thread, I couldn't resist

    You jerks.
