Oh, I hadn't known it was Softowl who instigated all that.
Oh, I hadn't known it was Softowl who instigated all that.
Soft owl wasn't that initiator just another flame burner, still pretty low blow though if you ask me considering thunt has just tried to apologize every change he can...
I have started on GKC, though it didn't really manage to grab me, and I've read the first twelve chapters or so. Even so, I think it's good that this contest gives certain comics a change to shine - MSPA already has a pretty massive fanbase, so I think it was nice that people went out to support other comics. Kudos to you guys!
As for Softowl, I don't get why she takes things out of context almost as much as the original flamer did. When Thunt posted that second blog entry that was 99% requests to leave the original instigator alone and that the woman was allowed to say whatever she wanted to say, somehow Softowl managed to focus on one word - 'screaming', as Thunt said that woman was allowed to scream about stuff if she wanted to - and from that conclude that Thunt was a terrible, hateful, misogynic person, or something, by somehow downplaying the seriousness and terribleness of the woman's situation and describing her as irrational. Really? Hasn't she noticed that the original rants and accusations of this woman really do sound like irrational screaming and hate spewing? Why did she have to go and make this pretty accurate description that Thunt gave into an attack on all womankind? I hate that tactic so much - you can't argue against those people because as soon as you do, you're attacking The Cause, and that makes you Evil. I'd expected more of someone like her, and I'm glad most people don't see it that black and white.
I enjoy Goblins and Gunnerkrigg and MSPA all... probably about equally. I found MSPA through the contest and managed to read it all in about 2 days, which was somewhat disappointing when I caught up. I'd hoped to keep going for a while before I got to the end.
I really am somewhat annoyed in the direction that all of this has taken though, I'd hope that the drama gets swept the rest of the way under the ground soon. I've read far too many people saying "Well, I'm not familiar with the comic at all, but from everything I've seen, your arguments are 100% true!" in regards to the rape accusations. Wherein what people are seeing is the parts that are being shown as "misogyny".
Uhg. So annoying.
I think a part of the problem Thunt faces, is that a lot of the point of his comic is to make fun of the stereotypical DnD characters. In which he's said, there's a lot of raping and pillaging going on. However, people don't normally realize how bad it would actually look/be to see those things. So tries to use the comic to SHOW them instead. Unfortunately, people look at his cliche stereotype characters and situations, and think that he's actually being serious.
The Goblin-Slayer is supposed to be a hero, and is supposed to represent a certain kind of bad roleplayer. I've known kids who would have played pretty accurate representations of him without a second thought, and I'm sure those same people would be just as disturbed at the rest of us at GS as a character. It's part of thunts purpose.
But some people don't really pick up on that. It's a bit too subtle.
One of the big complaints I'm reading about Thunt is about how he oversexualizes his female characters in general. Thunt doesn't deny this, but just remarks that he does it to both genders equally.
I'm going to deny it for him though. You have to look at his characters who are really characters to do so. Kin, being the most. But even she's not excessively so. There's mostly just the rape issue. Fox? Well, she's supposed to be the love interest in the triangle between Grem and Dies, but all in all she's pretty modest. And there's Yala. I tiny mute legless kobold that rides around on the back of a giant ogre. Oh, and Forgath. Who is played by a girl, so that counts. Forgath has a rather impressive beard.
Really, it doesn't compute.
It is annoying that some people act that way, but i guess that is just how it goes. Thunt posted about the incident again, by the way.
I suppose it is true that he did not handle the incident very well - really, he didnt, but what can you expect of someone who has just been accused in such a way, and for no reason other than out-of-context misunderstanding by the wrong person at the wrong time? And then they flame him for not smoothly handling it as perfectly as could've been done. It is easy to say in hindsight that he did some things wrong.
I really should see about getting a new signature.
well durrh yeah thats exactly how dwarves work
its really weird, but
I really should see about getting a new signature.
Hasn't it been established that Forgath is played by a girl?
Yep.
He was seen braiding his beard recently too.
While he's played by a girl though, it's been somewhat ambiguous as to whether forgath as a character is a girl.
He probly is.
Probably could had handled it better, but really only in the context of how her tumblr got leaked. Hmm Really saying something like this can be handled better from this stand-point is like walking through the kitchen and then realizing that you meant to get a cup of water so you go back.... and then universe ends from heat death a split second sooner.
But the way they are treating it is like, she stabbed him in the gut and is now complaining for him to clean the blood that splattered into her clothes out.
I do understand that a person's mental state is an important factor in rationalizing a person's actions, and that if her claim as a rape victim isn't a lie to cover her own ass, because afterall one's emotional state can change a Second-degree murder charge into being a Voluntary manslaughter.
Also the reason for the misogyny stuff should be very obvious to everyone, once you get to the three drow.
Edit: Apparently I'm in the mood for similes today.

I dont get how people can not get the drow i mean jeez.
The entire player character thing is made obvious right from the get go. D&D game mechanics withstanding and all that. Have they never played D&D- oh, right.
I really should see about getting a new signature.
I haven't even played D&D and I get it. In the world of MMORPG, why would anyone want to be ordinary-looking?
I have no problem with him posting about the drama on the site. "Laura" bad-mouthed the comic on multiple forums (who knows how many), posting about it on the main page seems like the best way to resolve other people's misconceptions , tacitly that is. Since they would go through there to see what the griping is about.

D&D is not an mmorpg, but yeah you're right.
I really should see about getting a new signature.
*cough*
Even barring that, D&D gave rise to many an MMORPG in the way it popularized player class archetypes.
Also, the drow thing is infamous far beyond "I want to be special". It's "I want to copy this amazing character I read about in a book" and was a huge phenomenon surrounding Drizzt.
No.
Which you really do continue seeing as mmorpgs take the place that DnD used to take.
Only bigger.
And without Drizzt.
D&D is not DDO though (but DDO is D&D, except fake)
But yeah, whenever anyone says "Drow", everyone thinks "Drizzt." I never did read those books, i mean yea i guess they're good but.

Saying that it's misogynistic to make the female drow like that obviously has never played before, it's meant to be a joke to show that most idiots play female elf characters like that, it even said that in one of the pages. Most of the things thunt puts in most D&D players can see is to poke fun at a miniority that play stupidly. Goblinslayer? The typical "Gibe xp huehuehue, I have sex with all women in tavern" kind of person, that is actually less of a minority due to the way people are acting these days. The drow characters were pretty obvious as soon as they mentioned drizzt the mary s-, oops did I say that out loud.
If people make blind accusations of things without even attempting to understand the context then that would mean there would be a shit load more angry conention goers over the people who throw buckets around for shits and giggles.
THEORY: Psion Minmax + Oblivious/Minmax's armor = The Gate Guardian
It is currently 3:20 AM.
I just checked briefly to see if it had updated at around midnight. Then I checked TV tropes to see what there was related to Oblivious. And then I ended up re-reading roughly the last third of it in the process of wiki-walking.
Hmm... I wonder if Min Max took a level in Psionic Warrior after seeing that alternate Psionic Version of himself. He could be using Expansion in this latest panel. Also I'm pretty sure that PsiMax is an Uncarnate.
I was wondering if he had suddenly leveled up, too.
I really should see about getting a new signature.
Speculation on the forums is that he leveled and multiclassed Barbarian - hence the eye-effect which is pretty much the same as Complains's rage. Also, apparently this is more advantageous for minmaxing than continuing to level in Fighter. I don't know anything about that stuff though, so I just take people's words for it.
that sounds logical. A single level barbarian makes sense in that manner because you get rage at first level.
If he is going to be minmaxing in that manner though, where is his rogue levels? Maybe he has decided that only two party members to flank with isnt enough to credit taking a rogue level.
Also because Minmax with rogue levels is silly.
I really should see about getting a new signature.
I think that last thing, yeah.![]()
