Dr. McNinja: The Thread
I KNOW. You'd think since the dinosaurs are capable of spaceflight, you'd think they would have neutralized Dracula's moon base. Also what is blowing up the dinosaur fortress with the moon laser supposed to accomplish?
Dr. McNinja: The Thread

And then there was a motorcycle which was an evil unicorn from the future-past.
I love that comic so much.
I'm pretty sure this makes Franz Rayner & co. and Ronald McDonald the only living major McNinjaverse characters to not either appear, or be mentioned in this story.
But when Dr. McNinja was teleported to Dracula's moon base, he THOUGHT at first that he had been shot by Dracula's moon laser. That probably means that they're at least similar effects.

He thought it was the laser because he was expecting to be hit by the laser. So when an unknown energy field enveloped him that was his first assumption. He doesn't know what it feels like to be shot by the laser, after all.
wait stop
think about what you guys are saying for a second here
humor me for a moment and take your mcninja posts out of context and just reflect on the events in your lives that have lead to this being a coherent, legitimate conversation that you can have about a thing
Hah. I was thinking about that the entire time I wrote that last post. That is the beauty of Dr. McNinja -- every single ingredient has a ton of potential for "wait a minute, I'm accepting THIS as a legitimate plot element?" moments. But it somehow works, as Hastings manages to walk JUST the right line between "playing it straight" and "playing it as pure farce".

The fact is, as soon as you start talking about Dr. McNinja, you sound ridiculous. Yet the comic itself somehow manages to avoid feeling dumb. This is a feat that I find astoundingly impressive. You can tell that it would only take a very slight change in pacing or focus to change this from a very fun, quality story, into an a nonsensical and painful series of groan-inducing memes. Dr. McNinja walks a very thin tightrope, and I've gotta respect Chris Hastings for that.
He channels all the absurdity into fun, and locks it there with a net of solid story structure, not allowing any of that absurdity to sour into uninteresting inanity.

dr. mcninja does, however, have a little bit of awkwardness going in, though? but once you've gotten adjusted to the world, it's like sailing a ship through a river made out of melted butter on top of a freshly waxed floor
Remember what the Dino-in-chief said about the Alpha Shield? "The Alpha Shield can't be broken by anything on Earth! You've... You've killed him!"
But Moon Lasers are by definition, not on Earth.
Yes because shooting a deadly laser shield with a deadly laser is the clear logical path to follow![]()
I am totally psyched for the Dr. McNinja thread in the soon to be webcomics subforum, because I won't have to feel guilty about talking about Dr. McNinja in the webcomics thread.
Anyway I have been reading Dr. McNinja since the early days during DARE to resist ninja drugs. Since I was like 13 or something at the time, there was never any awkwardness with the absurdity of the comic. Also I have to say, the art has gotten so much better since back then.
Edit: I have split this conversation off into its own thread now that it has a home. YAY!
Yaaaaaaay forum reorganization! I started reading McNinja right at the beginning of Monster Mart- right where he jumps off a building IN COLOR!!!! It was exciting and also sad because the archive had stopped but then more updates happened, on mondays and wednesdays and fridays! It was pretty cool.
Also it is pretty sweet that Esrever landed a panel from two webcomics at once including and technically entirely this one for the rules thread.
I can't think of a better page, though if you want to continue the incredibly silly when read out of context shenanigans you should totally put in the page's alt text too.
