    Sunless.

A young gaunt stands in his/her recuperation niche. It so happens that today is the fourteenth summer he/she has experienced and therfore, he/she is entering his/her seventh cycle and is therfore nearly an adult! This is an important and pivotal day and so therefore the family guardian has been making him/her a present.

What is this young man/lady's name?

    Your name is ZARAKA DIAKARTI.

You have a variety of INTERESTS, one being HEREDITARY and CHARCTERISTICS, specifically things that can be PASSED DOWN through the generations like your GREAT-GRANDFATHER'S BONES and the FAMILY GUARDIAN ITSELF, both of which have been in the family for a little over a HUNDRED CYCLES.
You are also interested in NECROMANCY, one of the principal parts of GAUNT CULTURE, specifically RAISING THE DEAD, UMBRAKINESIS and ALL THAT THAT ENTAILS. Unfortunately for your budding NECROMANTIC MASTERY, you utterly SUCK AT IT, despite any PRAYERS TO MORTAS you make.
Your teachers have told you that you just NEED TO PRACTICE, but they are LYING. Really, THEY ARE. You stockpile MIDNIGHT CRYSTALS and, occasionally, YOUR OWN BLOOD in a feeble attempt to give yourself a POWER BOOST, but the guardian usually finds them and DISPOSES OF THE BLOOD, claiming that it is UNHYGENIC and that the crystals are DANGEROUS, which YOU KNOW.
You tend to TALK TOO MUCH because you are ENTHUSIASTIC.

You can hear a bump and a muffled curse from next door, sounds like your family guardian catching at least two shins on a table.
So, what do you do now?

Examine and possibly captchalogue that green orb with the tendrils as well as the white sliver next to it.
Turn around and examine the other half of your recuperation niche.

Explain your culture's family situation, meaning who is raised by what.

Also, grab that Needle(?) next to the orb.
Hey look, it's a wild Signature!

The green orb is a simple magic attractor and storer, made of glass (a magical insulator) laced with something that draws magic out of the background field. It's releasing tendrils as the magic saturated the insulated ball and escapes, spending itself as green (in this case) tendrils.
The thing next to it is a short little wand thing you carved out of bone in one of your 'skills' lessons. You are rather proud of it.
You place the orb and bone stick in your inventory, by which you mean you pick them up.

You stick the bone in your inventory a pocket, and hold the orb in your hand, but you won't be able to hold it for long, it's nearly as big as your head.
Magic holding systems are really expensive, and you've only seen one. The Void is a bad place to go.

The other side of your spartan recuperation niche holds a mattress and a door.

Well, you are technically raised by your parents, with help from the family guardian, who is passed down through the generations. Once all living members of a family are too old to be babysat by the guardian, the guardian slips back into a role as a butler, guard, homework help and possibly a teacher, to a limited extent. Once a guardian is made, they work for their families until they die, usually. The guardians that outlive their families (that don't commit suicide) are recruited into the standing army of the city as a whole. Some richer families have more than one guardian, but those are usually stray ones that they have taken in.

Thanks! It's the best you can do to explain it.

    And speak of the devil...
    "Come in!"

    "I finisshed your pressent, Zsar."

What is the present that the guardian has brought you?

    - Something sharp
    - Something for wearing
    - Something vaguely protective
    - Something helpful for magic
    - Something not on this list, please elaborate

He brought GOGGLES. Which matches THREE of these categories! You're sure you can make it sharp somehow.

Daww. What a wonderful sign of friendship between an eight foot tall monster made for servitude and a five foot member of one of the most hated races in Geos. Apart from vampires.

    ... That's actually quite touching.

This is a bit weird, but you can definitely see the guardian and the door, oddly. You forgot about how the Life aspect clumps around anything living.

You go and have a look.

    Without goggles.

With goggles. This is a little abstract, but Rust is dark purple, Decay is dark green and Life is a lighter green. Dark is grey in this view. The black is the field itself.

You suspect the whole seeing through walls thing is not going to be nearly as exiting as it sounds.

Yes! Off to adventure! The guardian won't mind if you just wander off, you usually do that at this time of day. Night. Whatever. It's always twilight, except for at night, when it's a smidge darker under the Shadowed Sky. With capital letters, too.

Where are you going to go adventuring to?

Friend's house it is. That's nearest, it's the ninth balcony down.
Short route or long route? The short route's short, but the long route's safer.
