IV: Donna Summer 1948-2012 | Donald "Duck" Dunn 1941-2012

You know the drill. It's where you talk about and share music. Have at it!

    Guidelines:
    - This thread tends to be very youtube embed-heavy. If you're posting more than two videos, please spoiler them to cut down on load times.
    - If you quote someone's post with a video, please edit the video out or spoiler it for the same reason as above.

I feel like this place needs some Blur.

    And of course:

I guess you could say my musical tastes are bit blurry. Oh god, that was terrible. I am so, so sorry.

I like 13, and some of Think Tank. That's about it. 13 is a great record.

Albarn has not approached this level of musicality before or since. The first Gorillaz record doesn't really count since most of the music is via Dan The Automator. Second one was very uneven, and I thought Plastic Beach was shit with the exception of Stylo.

Yeah, no, 13 is pretty brilliant. I'd rank it among my favorite rock records, which admittedly is a short list.

There are only 3 songs off that album that I ever really listened to. Stylo, Rhinestone and Melancholy Hill. Snoop Dog was the worst thing off that album. Also Stylo got quite a cool remix from Alex Metric:

I say cool, but its no where near as cool as the original was. The original Stylo has a much smoother feel to it, which is something i just prefer.

    Yuck.

The bass in the original is pretty sick. BOW BUH BOW BOWP.

Aside from the bland songwriting on Plastic Beach, it's one of those records that has like three guests on each track. Too many cooks in the kitchen, etc.

The segments with Mos Def are highly reminiscent of Leftfield's Dusted w/ Roots Manuva.

I got the feeling that during the production of Plastic Beach, that they really didn't want to be doing the Gorillaz anymore. That's the feeling I got, I'm not sure if that's entirely the case. After all, they did start doing tours so...

I got listening to some of Ratatat's albums again. Came across "Beats" which I haven't heard before, but also came across this little gem again.

Is it me, or does that synth at the very beginning (or is that a flute? I have no idea but it sounds pretty mellotron-like.) remind anyone of some 1960s program themes? It does for me for some reason :U

    Re: IV: On The Floor

I wasn't feeling Plastic Beach, unfortunately.

Sample searching turned up this rad 1967 song, No Thank You Mr. Pusher by someone named Big Tom who doesn't yield a lot of results:

Several cool and brassy changeups in the sound throughout, no wonder it inspired a catchy breakbeat track.

You know, i think Plastic Beach was a pretty okay album in its own right. I just don't think it really stood up to any of the Gorillaz previous stuff. And god dammit "5/4" deserved a music video.

Man, I really dig the sound of a mellotron.

Sounds like a mellotron to me, or more likely samples of it. I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

It's a one-off private press 45, Firman, if Discogs is anything to go by. Nice cut.

    Old (very) but cute.

Yeah, being that it is Ratatat, I wouldn't be surprised. I also just remembered that this track is featured in Charlie Brooker quite a bit. And aah, old British information films. How charming. Which also totally reminds me:

Can I ask, what does that imply? Surely "Big Tom" didn't just make one song out of the blue and then nothing before or after. Would it have been like, a local musician playing bars or something, and then someone heard a song they liked and asked to put it on a record?

That is, in fact, exactly what it implies. The situation could have been something similar to that. A look at the writing and production credits and the flip side reveals it was possibly a husband and wife team.

    Re: IV: On The Floor

That just makes me think sadly of all the cool music I might have liked lost to time and lack of distribution. I guess that isn't so much of a problem anymore now that anyone can record and upload.

    did someone say john zooooooooorn

I'm not a big fan of his weird avant-garde stuff, but his work with The Dreamers is cool. Plus his klezmer stuff is pretty neat.

New title made me think of this for some reason

This is quite possibly the least rock thing I would put in my Top 50 favorite songs.

Not a big fan of the album "Feels," but this song makes up for everything.
