The entire House Telvanni has been buried underground by giant pile of volcanic ash. The Mage-Lords are largely ignoring this, preferring to continue whatever research they were doing before the Ministry fell. I like this theory.

You know, this is probably how the Dwemer originally moved underground. Red Mountain buried them, and they just didn't think the situation was interesting enough, and never bothered unburying themselves.

I made a boring ol' Redguard with custom class that basically amounted to "I will kill things with a sword and open locked shit" :V

Its hard to go back to this regular RPG line of thinking after playing so much Fallout. "Wait, you mean I can just rest to heal practically wherever, instead of just in special beds?"

After trying to play a combat class for a while and ending up using sneak a lot any way, I'm really starting to ache for Skyrim's lack of classes. Maybe there's a mod already that tries to replicate in Oblivion what's been described for Skyrim...

Picked up Oblivion again a couple of weeks back, after having not touched it for four years. It really is a charmless game, especially now that its graphics have changed from "mindblowing" to "nothing special". Still kind of addictive, though.

I hope they put a bit more imagination into Skyrim. Oblivion is pretty and elaborate, but it starts to feel kind of mechanical and repetitive after a while. Doesn't help that a lot of the quests boil down to "kill everything inside this dungeon" and/or "talk to a series of NPCs".

I think one of the best quests is the one to collect the nirnroot.

Oblivion is way more fun when you play it with a group of friends. We started an Argonian named Knifeboy, and made his custom class knifer. But then we only trained him for blunt, not bladed weapons. We convinced one guy that we were gathering nirnroot to make the nirnroot sword, the best sword in the game. Spent forever gathering cloth because we thought we could craft clothes. We misread the title of the "Affairs of a Wizard" quest, and the whole time we were like "Oh man we're gonna go have an affair with a wizard!"

Oh, and in the last arena challenge with the boar porkchop, when we won porkchop ran towards us and our guy with the controller ran away yelling "I don't want to fight you porkchop!"

I thought it was kind of weird that in Oblivion, a sufficiently good Mage was also a great everything else. You could make like 100% Chameleon spells and spells that gave 100 point temporary buffs to various skills (like Lockpicking or Blunt Weapons) that'd allow you to be pretty good at whatever. I guess Skyrim will fix that, probably.

Anyhow, it was pretty addicting, until mostly I finished all the faction quests and stuff and got kind of tired of how monotonous the various side quests seemed to be.

Yes! But most RPGs have interesting plots and dungeons and combat mechanics, such that the silly quests are usually an excuse to allow the player to enjoy everything else. Oblivion has passable combat mechanics, laughable quest plots and carbon-copy dungeons, is the problem.

I mean, the game has a few quests that are actually original and compelling. I'm thinking: going back to where the game started so you can kill that prisoner, grabbing a Ring of Burdening out of the well and exposing the asshole mage as a necromancer, sleuthing out that guy who pretended his old friends were vampires so he could steal their loot, and having to kill a dozen evil cultists all at once. I'd rather have had a smaller game that just had those interesting quests, rather than a mindblowingly huge game that ended up being mostly filler.

in tes, a sufficiently good mage means you never lose, ever. i think that is my least favorite thing about the series.

Judging by some pictures of player characters that came out recently, the fugly syndrome might be over in skyrim.

is it just me or do the ref pics of morrowind khajiit and argonian on that page (bottom row) look BETTER than the ref pics for the same two in oblivion (middle row)?

    Re: [Elder Scrolls Series] Threadguard

Maybe that's because morrowinds faces were modeled by hand as opposed to oblivions which where generated using middleware.
This would have been a good idea if it hadn't been for bethesda using such boring head meshes and completely awful textures.

Oblivion was an early 360 title, and they actually did throw a party when it was announced they were doubling the 360s RAM.

Khajiit in Morrowind also had looks besides “vaguely like Whoopi Goldberg”. Not that looking like Whoopi Goldberg is a bad thing, just... individuality.

I like how Khajiit in Arena and Daggerfall were humans with face paint. This amuses me to no end.

The daggerfall ones had fur and tails, too:

This screenshot is from the first time I ever went clothing shopping in Daggerfall. You could piece together some utterly hideous outfits in that game. Here are my personal fashion highlights:

Little Red Riding Hood with Ribcage-High, Front-only pants
Loincloth, Knee-High Boots, and Partially Effective Bra (NSFW)
    And my favorite,
    Catsuit with Mace Boobs.

I'm pretty disappointed Skyrim is combining all clothing sets into single items.

Did not know that, and that's ridiculous. Maybe they'll let you wear a ring on each finger to compensate. :/ How else are you going to get your enchantment on?

Bigger issue: does this mean we can't be shirtless vikings without also being pantsless vikings?

IMO being able to choose from over 30 glorious viking beards is pointless if you have to wear a shirt with them.

I think that for being an older-ish game (given the 360's been around a while) that it wasn't too bad with the graphics. I mean, Bethesda's faces aren't the greatest, but Fallout 3's and New Vegas's weren't too terrifying.

I personally love Oblivion, it was the first game I got for my 360, being a sort-of latecomer to that party. It just was a game that felt like I could do anything... and I did do anything. The only issue was that I was so afraid of doing main quest things that I wound up doing more sidequest things and was too weak in a ways to undertake the main quest later on so I had to restart and stuff... but other than that? I really enjoyed the game.

Um, I didn't get to play Morrowind, but I'm really looking forward to Skyrim!

I hope my post wasn't too intrusive... still getting acquainted to these forums.

Clothing sets into single items? Why would you do this? It doesn't make sense.
