Re: MSPA Fan Music 2: Now In Cut Time

it's a little right ear heavy with the bass shifted to that side.
and with the percussion coming in on the left only, it's a bit of a weird experience.
perhaps centring those would be better.
other than that, it's pretty cool! could use some cooler soundfonts too, but compositionally I like it. :'D

Hm, actually, yeah. Moving the percussion and bass to the middle does really help. And I wish I had better soundfonts so much, it's not even funny.

EDIT: Yeah, here's the slightly improved version.

It's still a WIP. I'm thinking it's going to be a strife theme for dirk.
    Any suggestions?

Can I get feedback on which of these versions of a song you guys prefer? I'm starting to use FL studio and I want to know if I'm doing better than the default noteflight sounds yet.

    Dude - sounding cooler now!
UWBW - I think near the end the synth sort of gets a bit behind the beat? Apart from that it's cool. c:
Edit: Quaddy, sounds better. Needs better viola, violin, oboe synths in my opinion. (Also compositionally, I'm not sold on how you're using the drum kit. The whole piece seems to lack bass tonality until near the end.)

Hm...well, the first and most obvious thing I can think of is that the melody seems to get ahead of the beat and ends up being very off of it, so it gets a sort of pulling feeling to it that's a bit...weird.

I'd say to try and sync the melody to the beat more and pull it back. The first section does sound cool, though. It just needs to be a bit more in sync.

Considering several of the instruments aren't audible in the noteflight version, I'd say you are? That could just be me, though.

And I've been obsessively updating Till Death so many times that it's not even funny. But I am finally done updating it so...yay.

So yeah, the fl studio version is better. Though personally, I did like the drum kit, and yeah, the bassline (cello, basically) drops out a few times.

I kind of think you might want to have another, deeper instrument complement the oboe line though. Maybe a clarinet? The melody line is a little lonely.

It's a really cool song and I love it, but the whole thing sounds like it's under a low-pass filter; a bit muffled. This could be remedied in a few ways, one of which would be to add some EQ to the kick and snare, boosting the high end and adding a bit more punch. The synths themselves suffer from the same problem, and at the same time they can be kind of grating, especially around 1:00. I'll assume you're using 3xOsc; I recognize the (unfortunately aliased and grating) waveforms. I'd suggest replacing it with something like FL's included Wasp XT, SimSynth, or (ideally) the paid FL plugin Harmor.

And since I have a lot of free time, I decided to screw around with Famitracker and made this:

Yet another theme for a fantroll of mine, but uh...it's loud. Turn down your volume when you listen to it.

so your fantroll is a pokémon trainer? hehehehehe
sounds really good, but it doesn't really scream strife theme to me because it just sounds so much like a trainer battle like wow...

sounds cool, though i think some of the chordal stuff is a little awkward. not too noticeably, at least.

I cleaned it up a bit, shifted it down so it fit the subject matter a bit better, added an additional drum part in the middle, and cleaned up the end.

Three guesses as to who this song is about, and the first two don't count.

i love the interesting mix of modes, really works in your favour.
the last couple of notes felt like the song was dragging on past its welcome, though.

I decided I wanted to get into making chiptunes (LSDJ, since that was easy to get up and running on a Mac) a few weeks ago, and my first project ended up being a homestuck remix. I'm a total first-timer, not just with chiptunes but with composition in general, and pretty much totally untrained; any advice anyone could offer would be awesome.

Well, since I figured I'd mess with FL Studio, I decided to see what I could do to improve Till Death. I feel that it's still not quite perfect but...well, I dunno. How is it?

I mean, I guess balancing is an issue, but I keep fiddling with it and if it's too soft it ends up muffled and if it's too loud it burns it and I can't find an in between @_@

EDIT: Yeah, I fixed it a little bit. Oddly enough, I still get some static but now I'm starting to wonder if it's just my shitty laptop speakers...

The mixing process is extremely painful sometimes. I can attest to that.

I think the biggest bug in the mixing respect is that the guitar and the bells feel a bit too loud in respect to everything else at the beginning. The middle is great, and the end might be a little loud, but it doesn't bother me.

The other thing is that the song goes from kind of soft-sounding synths to raging guitar without any foreshadowing, which makes the guitar sound loud and roaring compared to anything else. Maybe have a rising guitar slide in the beginning segment somewhere?

Otherwise, well played. I love how it changes gears several times. It has a nice sense of flow, except for maybe that beginning part a little bit.. The soundfonts are good, the mixing is pretty good except for a couple spots, and I love the themes.

I think you've pretty much got it. Whether you mess with it more or not, I hope to hear more of your stuff in the future.

This is pretty good for a first piece! Better than mine was.

I like how the two remixes blend together. It's simple, but it really works with the overall atmosphere more than anything else would. I also like how you added drums and accompaniment to "I'm a Member of the Midnight Crew." I don't know if I'm loving the key that the first part is in, but it's an interesting decision, and I think it works.

    A few nitpicks...

I feel like the bass overpowers parts of the song. Maybe it's just because I'm wearing headphones, which seem to amplify the bass part in a lot of music I like (my speakers on my computer aren't working at the moment, and my laptop isn't easy to access right now so I can maybe try it without headphones later). This is compounded by the fact that the bass seems to jump in and out a lot.

Secondly, starting it in the original key and then transitioning is a good idea. However, I don't think it's implemented here in the best way possible. The part in the original key seems too short, and that dissonant chord right afterward is kind of throwing me. Chiptunes really make dissonance stand out I think, and dissonance should be used sparingly anyway unless you just want the whole song to be a kind of Schoenberg-esque dissonant exploration, which I'm guessing isn't what you were going for.

Trust me, I learned that the hard way. And I still mess up a lot, in that respect and in many, MANY others, so don't feel discouraged.

Dissonance can be interesting, like a lot of the chords in the jazzy MeGaLoVania section, which I loved, btw. I just think that one chord is kind of jarring.

And... That's it. I hope you make more chiptunes.

it was going alright, milkow, but it all kinda fell apart. it was a nice idea but it felt like a lot of the instrument additions didn't go anywhere, just played their part and left?

the mellow atmosphere was nice but a little boring at times
loved the kit though, laid back, set the beat well

i would say more but it's hard to type atm
