Argh cliffhangers. I'm just glad this episode didn't give me more things to be paranoid of.

No Bellstrom was referring to the Doctor's line about how Cleaves referred to the ganger as an it but referred to the glorified cattle prod as a she.

    Yeah I know that.
I noticed I reffered to the suspense as a she, but I don't think I referred to the ganger as an it.

but now I've ruined the joke I think.

Heh, I feel sorry for you guys in the US having to wait 'til the 4th for the second part; I found it really awesome and actually a pretty scary.
    Hey look! Stuffs! Go see!

I'm still working on TFTD, honest!

The second part wasn't terrible. The main content of the episode was worse than the super arc contributions however.

Oh god, this two episodes sucked, in my opinion they're the worst episodes of the new series. The end was cool, though.

[TV] Doctor Who - Hello, sweetie.

I've noticed that there seems to be a fairly large following of Doctor Who on these forums, and thought: Why not make a thread? It gives a place to talk about the show in general, as well as the current running season and discuss IDE/Theories.

    What is Doctor Who?
Back in 1963 BBC commissioned one of the first GOOD sci-fi television series in history. It is about a time travelling alien called The Doctor whose interests conflicted with the rest of his people (the Time Lords), choosing to step in and interfere with time and space in order to save people and planets alike, against his planet's laws. Originally stumbled upon by a pair of teachers in a junkyard, the Doctor is seen to take humans under his wing to show them the wonders of the universe thanks to his time travelling machine The TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space): a box that is bigger on the inside than the outside. Relatively immortal (barring accidents), when the Doctor comes close to death he can regenerate every cell in his body, cheating death. This means he has a new face, new personality and new actor. This was done for 7 actors before the show was cancelled in 1989.

After a poor TV movie in 1996 the show returned with a bang in 2005, which saw Christopher Eccleston (28 Days Later, GI Joe) play The Doctor, now as a guilt-stricken survivor of the Last Time War against one of the Time Lords' most hated enemies, the Daleks. However, worried about being typecast, he left the same year and David Tennant took over. After becoming considered by many as "The Best Doctor" he left in 2010 after a 5-year reign.

Now Matt Smith plays the Time Lord, and looks like he's going to be sticking around for a good long time.
    Where can I start?
Excellent. We've got your attention. There's a few different places you can start out depending on how many series you want to trawl through.

The place most of us have started is at the 2005 reboot. You can start from here and not miss much, as it reintroduces itself assuming that no-one's ever watched before. You'll be starting from the Doctor's ninth incarnation, played by Chris Eccleston. Here the Doctor is still coming to terms with surviving the Last Time War between his own race and their enemies the Daleks (the war occurring offscreen between the TV movie and the reboot), and shop-girl Rose Tyler becomes entangled in his life, joining him as a companion.

This isn't to say the older episodes aren't worth a look either. Bear in mind that many of the earlier episodes have been lost because of the BBC's short-sightedness, something Who-fans will never forgive them for, but they are still excellent stories, although there are a lot of them.

If you want you could also start from Series 5 (2010 series) and get the idea of the show pretty quick, as the previous overlapping storylines are cut completely with a new Doctor and companion appearing at the same time.
Oh. First, a few things you must know...

Stuff you should know before watching
    Assuming you're watching from 2005:
    • The show is about an alien called the Doctor
    • He is from the planet Gallifrey, home planet of the Time Lords
    • When fatally injured, he can "regenerate" into a new body, with a new personality and mannerisms. However he retains his memories and his core values, such as anti-violence and eccentricity. In terms of production, this means that the actor playing the Doctor can quit while leaving the show to continue, and it allows each actor to bring something new to the way they play their incarnation.
    • He travels through time and space in a vehicle called the "TARDIS", which stands for "Time And Relative Dimensions In Space". On the outside, it appears to be a lowly police box, but this is merely a cunning disguise, as inside it houses things like a vast control room, library and (allegedly) a swimming pool.
    • The TARDIS can go anywhere and anywhen, but there are complex rules dictating the extent to which the Doctor can interfere with his own timeline, which can be loosely summed up as "wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey"
    • Sometime between the Eighth and Ninth Doctors, there was a "Time War" between the Time Lords and the Doctor's greatest enemy, the Daleks. The Doctor was the sole survivor of the Time Lords, though a handful of Daleks also survived. The Doctor's guilt over his race's death is a key characteristic of his Ninth incarnation.
    • The Doctor frequently travels with various companions from all of time and space. They are frequently used to answer questions about the situations they find themselves in for the audience.
    Characters of Series 1-4
    Rose Tyler

In the series' narrative, Rose is introduced as a working class shop assistant from London, introduced alongside her own supporting cast in the form of her mother Jackie Tyler (Camille Coduri) and her boyfriend Mickey Smith(Noel Clarke). Whereas the classic series refrained from exploring romantic connections between the Doctor and his companions, Rose grows increasingly trusting of the Doctor and comes to realise she has fallen in love with him.

    "Captain" Jack Harkness

In the programme's narrative, Jack begins as a time traveller and former con man from the 51st century. In contrast to the Doctor, Jack is a man of action, more willing to apply a hands-on solution to a problem. He takes the leading role in the spin-off "Torchwood" where he fights aliens in Cardiff along with a crack team of gun-toting bisexuals in an undercover agency. Series 4, "Miracle Day", is due to be shown this July, set in the USA and Cardiff, following the idea of what would happen if the world's population stopped dying.

    Martha Jones

Within the series' narrative, Martha begins as a medical student who becomes the Doctor's time travelling companion after an incident at the hospital where she works. After well over a year (from the perspective of the Doctor and herself) of service at his side, they decide to part ways. She later had a few guest appearances on Torchwood, and then another appearance in the Series 4 two-parter "The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky."

    Donna Noble

Within the series' narrative, Donna begins as an outspoken middle aged Londoner, whose view of the universe is a very small place. Although she at first findsalien time traveller the Doctor terrifying, their initial encounter leaves her unsatisfied with her small little world, and she jumps at the chance to travel alongside him when the next opportunity arises. The Doctor later mindrapes her and leaves her on Earth.

    Sarah-Jane Smith

A former long-term (and arguably most loved by the audience of the old series) companion of the Doctor, she is re-united with him in the Series 2 episode "School Reunion", along with robot dog K-9. She had her own spin-off, "The Sarah Jane Adventures", focussing on her continued alien investigations with the aid of a four high-schoolers.

After Elisabeth Sladen's tragic death of cancer a couple of months ago, the partially completed new series will be aired later this year.
    Characters of Series 5/6
    The Doctor

A 900-and-something year old Time Lord who has saved the universe way too many times. Over the years the Doctor has been put through a lot of heartbreak but hides it well. He has watched many people - strangers, enemies, his friends, his family and his people die, sometimes at his own hand (though death is generally never his desire or intention). However, now it seems he is finally starting to get over it a little bit (or at least is able to bury it a little deeper). His latest body is the youngest he has ever looked. He has a reckless and spontaneous personality, fires words before thoughts and, like most of his previous selves, is anti-violence. Thanks to a rather explosive last regeneration, the Doctor has a new TARDIS and has acquired a new companion. Unlike his previous incarnations, this Doctor has a soft spot for children. The universe could be falling apart but if you make a child cry, The Doctor will rip you into pieces. He’s a bit weird and a bit alien. But he is a master of speeches. If you get on the wrong side of the Doctor, hell will fall from the sky, and you'd better run.

    Amy Pond

The Doctor crashed into Amy’s life when she was seven. Literally. He came back when Amy was a young woman, and he showed her the universe. Amy Pond is a little girl living out her dream fairy tale. Her parents mysteriously disappeared when she was young ...

    Rory Williams

Amy's love interest (and as of the end of Series 5, her husband), he is initially slightly beta and jealous of the Doctor, but through Series 5 we see him develop into a sword-wielding laser-shooting badass. In Series 6, he is truly a full-time companion (the title credits tell us so!).

    River Song

An enigma. Neither we nor the Doctor know much about her as of yet, because due to time travel she and the Doctor keep meeting each other in the wrong order. She is superficially friendly but it is implied that she holds dark secrets about the Doctor's future, and it is heavily implied that they are romantically involved in the Doctor's future.
    Recurring Villains
(there are many more, but these are the more memorable)

    Daleks

Within the series, Daleks are cyborgs from the planet Skaro, created by the scientist Davros during the final years of a thousand-year war against the Thals. They are mutated Kaleds integrated within a tank-like or robot-like mechanical casing. The resulting creatures are a powerful race bent on universal conquest and domination, utterly without pity, compassion or remorse. Various storylines portray them as having had every emotion removed except hate, leaving them with a desire to purge the Universe of all non-Dalek life. Occasionally they are shown as experiencing other emotions, primarily fear, although such occurrences are rare. Collectively they are the greatest enemies of the series' protagonist, the Time Lord known as the Doctor. Their famous catchphrase is "Exterminate!", with each syllable individually synthesised in a frantic electronic voice.

    Cybermen

Cybermen were originally a wholly organic species of humanoids originating on Earth's twin planet Mondas that began to implant more and more artificial parts into their bodies as a means of self-preservation. This led to the race becoming coldly logical and calculating, with every emotion all but deleted from their minds. The Cybermen also have a rivalry with the Daleks (aka the daleks kicked their asses)

    Weeping Angels

    DON'T. BLINK.
    Series Six - ONGOING
So, what the hell is going on?

There's a lot of discussion of a pretty impressive handful of plot threads that've been planted so far this series. I'll stick down the most pressing questions and interesting enigmas so far this series, though I'll try to be as vague as possible to prevent spoilers:

    - This has been building since Series 5. What role does the Silence still have to play? What motivated them to their actions with the TARDIS at the end of Series 5... ultimately, HOW will Silence Fall? How will Amy supposedly "bring the Silence?"
    - Who was the mysterious girl we encountered in episodes 1 and 2? Why would she have a photo of Amy in her room, in 1969? Why are the Silence seemingly protecting her? And, how the hell does she do what she does at the end of episode 2?
    - The "Eyepatch Lady" appears randomly throughout the first part of the series to Amy. What plans does she have for Amy? What is her motive?
    - How will the Doctor escape his fate?
    - Who exactly is River Song?

    Welcome to the thread.
    Diary Dates

    Saturday 4th June - Mid-series finale.
Saturday 4th June - "Still Got Legs" - Chameleon Circuit's second album is released. (Chameleon Circuit is a "Trock" band who make music and sing directly about the Doctor and the Whoniverse. Check them out. The first, self-titled album is at the bottom of the page, and you can listen to the whole thing for free). The listening party for the second album's release is sadly already sold out.
8th-10th July - Comic Con - Karen Gillan and Mark Sheppard are both attending, though prices to have a photo/autograph and extortionately high. Check it out here.

While I was rewatching Season 1, I noticed something interesting.

In Rose(the episode), during the scene when the Doctor visits Rose(the person)'s apartment, he looks at himself in the mirror and remarks, "Eh, could have been worse. Look at the ears!"

This would seem to suggest he'd very recently regenerated and was still getting used to the appearance of his new body.

Season Six can be found online, if you look in the right places.

Well, technically he had. Christopher Eccleston was the 9th Doctor, and we can presume that at the start of the first season of the reboot he'd just regenerated from the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann, who was in the 1996 film, before they killed the show for 9 years.

I'm a little disappointed that Sexy's message didn't have more significance to the plot. At best it could let you figure out the reveal half way through the episode instead of shortly before the end.

The Almost People just aired last night for me. Partway through I realized how ridiculous it was that they were in an acid factory with acid spewing everywhere.
