I've never been all that enamored with him, to be honest. In the games, does he actually have much personality other than just being a jerk to you? That and him being Oak's grandson are literally the only qualities I remember that come from the games themselves. His anime persona was the memorable one.
Silver is the far better rival character if you ask me. He starts out as a callous jerk but has character growth over the course of the game. That's a lot more than can be said about Gary/Blue/Green/Whatever.
