I have all my icons set to Homestuck on my XP now. And cursors. And browser themes. I'm currently looking for some other things to customize this computer with, since it's what I use most and what I'll be using for school. I used to have shimejis all the time, but I got told by a teacher to not have little grey skinned devils running around on my computer, so those aren't on my computer. I'm going to try and find as many customization apps as I can and just figure out how to make it Homestuck, even if I don't make my computer like a character's I'd rather have it coated with as much Homestuck as I can.

Also, unrelated, I finally got my hands on some Redpop faygo.

I haven't had a chance to mess around with icon changing yet other than making the recycle bin a Sordid Receptacle (it'd be really nice if I knew how to change filetype/folder icon defaults rather than doing it on a case-by-case basis), but look what I did with DisplayFusion (un-time-restricted free version yaaaaaaaay), that sweet Skaia desktop one page ago, and some Paint.net cropping shenanigans (plus a Flip It Turnways).

I actually have the left screen crop area at the bottom of the wallpaper because my laptop is physically lower than the secondary monitor, but I screencapped this way to show how the effect actually feels. Also, it sucks that I'm limited to Windows Classickind themes (which I also haven't had a chance to experiment with), because Source Engine games in windowed-noborder mode FTFO if Aero is turned on.

Open your start menu and search "regedit". Hit enter and click YES.

Once regedit is open, navigate to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > lnkfile"
(An easy way to do this is open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and click a random folder, and press L, then N, then K and it should bring you to it.)

There is a file called "IsShortcut". Click it, press DELETE, and hit YES.

Once this file is deleted, LOG OUT, and back in for it to take effect.
Keep in mind, once you do this, you can not make new shortcuts on your desktop, or pin things to your taskbar.
SO in order to be able to do that, you must revert what you've just done. (I just revert and reapply this every time I need to make a shortcut.)


TO REVERSE THIS.

holy shit! i was following that tutorial step by step until i read the part where you can't add new shortcuts anymore! please put warnings like that at the BEGINNING of a set of instructions.

You CAN add shortcuts.
You just have to re-add the IsShortcut file back into the registry.
It doesn't break anything.
You just have to add the file when you want to add shortcuts/pin things to the taskbar, and remove the file when you don't want the arrow there.

First off, it doesn't break anything. It's a side effect which is quite obvious. It's because you're taking the IsShortcut file out. You can't create a shortcut without a shortcut registry.
Secondly, that program is basically what I posted, except in a program. More or less.

The program uses an alternate method; it doesn't take out the IsShortcut class so you can still make shortcuts.

I wanted to try a more homestuck-y wallpaper, but I loved this Team Gurren logo too much so I had to make do with the icons representing homestuck. I quite like it though
