    Games Subforum Chat

At Acionyx's request, I've moved this thread out of Nerdcrap and to a new home in the subforum it probably belonged in in the first place. Pitch your ideas for forum games, or talk about ones you've been in.

Remember, discussing your roles or communicating with other players outside a game is against the rules! So don't go talking about your role in incomplete games or nuffin'. (Unless you're dead, and even then mind you don't go spilling any additional beans.)

Otherwise, feel free to talk about in-jokes, strategies, best roles you've played, setups and balancing, pitching your next game, what have you. Or scream your rage at Slippery scumbags or bastard GMs. That's cool as well. A list of completed games can be found in the other sticky of this subforum; this one's more of a general chat for you peeps.

Oh, we also play shorter games on #MSPAfia on Esper IRC. Games start when there's a GM and enough keen people.

some pro-tips for people creating yr own setups

-never ever use jesters or lynchers. punishing the town for lynching basically destroys the entire concept of the game, and if I ever see another person say "WE CANT LYNCH X WHAT IF THEY'RE A JESTER" i will literally strangle a puppy

-use lots of vanillas. lots of them. chances are you can't balance that many moving parts.

-watchers are trackers are way more ridiculously powerful than you assume they are

Trouble with blues/villagers though, is that essentially they're boring to most people. Sure, I personally don't mind playing them (The lack of responsibility that gets lumped with a power-role is nice to avoid) I prefer to just watch people and figure out who's being scummy that way. But my logical faculties are pretty shot especially at early hours like this one, so perhaps I'd be better at power-roles when I'm marginally more awake.

the point is, is that if you're relying on your power to guide your actions every game, you're not focusing on actually playing the game. this is true even for roles like doctor, who are more worried about staying under the radar a lot of the time. being vanilla forces you to actually work out who the scum are

Well, yeah. That's why I prefer it (plus I get less hookers on my tail if I'm blue), not to mention that little bit of satisfaction when the mafia kills you because you were gonna out them, rather than because of your power role.

    Counterargument: bluicide. Ruins any setup.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner

I'm not a big fan of epicmafia mostly because there are about eight billion more roles than are necessary, and nearly all the games I've played in are all/all-but-one special.

One cop and a total of three villagers per mafia member is the way to go

EDIT: on "boringness", once people realize that all you have to do to play is chat a lot, games get a lot more fun.

I've played some seriously tight games of Are You a Werewolf at conventions before, which is basically completely vanilla setup.

Re: Mafia/Werewolf: A Scumhunting We Will Go

The thing I've found though is that normal mafia games do not translate well to the internet.

Let me put it this way, I've yet to see one pure vanilla game on the internet wasn't a clean sweep for the mafia. Okay so I've only seen about 4 or 5 but those are also some of the only clean sweeps for a mafia I've ever seen. The fact is you just lose too much on the internet, you can't see reactions you can't see their face. It is a hell of a lot easier to lie convincingly in text and you can take your time to react and compose yourself before writing up a post and look carefully over it for any slips before you hit submit. I suppose chat based games would be a bit better but I haven't really played many of those, I'm mostly talking about forum games here.

I've found in general a forum setting lends itself well to more chaotic or experimental setups, pms let you make much more complex actions and roles, games usually go for a couple of weeks so vanillas are even more likely to get bored and like I mentioned before it's so much harder to scumhunt effectively. All you really get to work with is voting records in the end or someone making a really bad obvious slip. I may be somewhat biased due to my "upbringing" here. I first found mafia in a forum that played more chaotic style games, chocolate or very few vanillas, no fixed set ups, constantly experimenting with things, I didn't even know mafia was based of an irl game at the time so to me that is mafia. In a way it's true that this almost makes it a different game to normal mafia, it's less about what people are saying and more about actions and how to utilize the game's mechanics to your advantage but in the end I guess I'm saying a find that enjoyable as well.

Yeah, I'm with Weldar. Vanilla mafia is great IRL but it loses something on the internet. If we're gonna do this, we might as well experiment with it a little.

thats why real pros play on irc. c9 is the single best setup ever invented. seven players, 0-1 cops, 0-1 docs, two vanilla scum, all vanilla otherwise.

I like Mafia type games, but I like them a lot more if I'm on the Mafia, or I'm that wildcard guy who is basically on his own team (so many different names for this guy I don't know what the most common one is)

Can I bump this to muster up some recruits for some games that're starting? I think I can.

There's three recruiting at the moment, and getting more people in on it would be awesome

    Guess Varinn was the Godfather.

That reminds me, we need to go smack Trihan around for dropping #wolfhunt. That shit was fun.

Well mafia really took off nicely here, wonderful.

Aw man I have a crazy mafia idea I'd like to try and it's the school holidays now so it would be a good time for me to host it but at the same time I feel there may already be a few too many games going on already, what to do?

That depends entirely on how crazy-awesome your idea is. Focus group it here!

I'm always keen for another game, but how many players were you thinking for your setup?

I'd probably be going for 20 or 24. It'd be a fairly funky game featuring more than 1 mafia team and some other secret stuff I can't really reveal. Now that I think of it it may go slightly faster than your average mafia game, especially since I'll probably use the set deadline to lynch time system rather than the once a majority is reached system.

oof. A snappy game sounds good in theory, but you're going to want some dedicated folks to keep it active - otherwise you'll be subbing in and out a lot, or the town suffers from inactivity.

EM is a bit glitchy and under construction. But use Firefox or Chrome for the browser
