Reviving this thread because we all got so dang chatty in a Forum Adventure about Mafia.
Present topic: Day 1 NLs. Vote to lynch? On this forum they're pretty much a foregone conclusion, although the fact we have Nightstarts more often seems to be shifting that a bit.
So, my gaming club calls it "Werewolf" and we usually use boring stock roles like Seer, Hunter, Bodyguard, and Cupid, and write which caracters are in the game on the board. We also never EVER vote for no-kill.
Would you like your possessions identified? (Y/N)
Also, our success rate in lynching scum is terribly low. seems like most times town only wins when we have a smart vigilante or a lucky serial killer.

Well, Mafia was the original version, I think, but it doesn't matter.
Also, the guide I mentioned, would only be the listing of the various Mafia Games on the forum, a small description of there flavour, notable moments, in-jokes. Like the Penguin or the Slips-Gambit.
Also, in the #mspafia IRC, Pick Their Poison and Pick your Poison are popular. In PYP, you name your role, and the mod invents what it actually does, and in PTP, you send in three roles names, and the Mod randomly chooses from the big pool of roles.

Yessss
I was basically just trying to cause as much chaos as I could that game (town Busdriver). Pinary was the time-travelling Lyncher on Gloomy; he snuffed it and was crossing his fingers for a lynch the next day. Gloomy had been sending useless Telemarketer messages to Sruixan (oh god that infernal cipher) and offered to send Wheat one the next night to verify his role.
When I told Pines I'd bus'd Sruixan and Wheat that night, he cracked up. Unfortunately for him it didn't lead to a lynch.
I think you guys lynched both Whoosh! and Knaelidos in that game, which was a lot better than average. I was the last mafia for like three days. Thank god Wheaty was an extreme miller or else Knaelidos's dumb dumb final words could have ended me a lot faster.

So you're saying I should take it easy on the village, and stack games with the thought that the only way they'll catch a Werewolf is with Seer information?

I would say, for this forum, go hog wild in terms of set up. Have a ridiculous idea that would never work in real life? Slap it in here.

I tend to die a lot N1 (one of those in-jokes around here), so I don't see much many days except D1. I used to be a big proponent of D1 NL, but since I've noticed that I have a pattern of dying a lot, I've been more keen to RL, if at all possible (pro-tip: It's not). Really though our games are so full of flavor that sometimes its hard to sort anything out.
Edit: Balance is something tricky for Mafia games, and I'm not too familiar with how Werewolf works (SleepingOrange would perhaps be the one to ask about that), but as a general rule you want to have a ratio of about 4:1 town:mafia. You make exceptions if there are a lot of vanilla mafia roles and town power roles, or if there are negative effects associated to certain mafia abilities. If town is Power Heavy you want to give them some quirks to balance things out or arrange the flavor to prevent rampant Role-Claiming. There are many things you can do to balance a game. I just feel it out and get a general feel for the roles and the possibilities.
(It feels weird editing posts with all the Mafia games I'm in)
Esper it is. It'd be nice to have more people in and out of there; GMs like PL and Slorange and Sruixan (and a few others I might've missed, sorry) just run a game whenever there's numbers to do it. I vaguely recall a PtP with some kind of ludicrous Mexican Standoff toward the end.
Plus, IRC's a better setting for short-form games with less than ten players in the setup. Leastaways, I think so.
As for setups, on this forum they're predominantly closed and crazy - most bare-bones setups I've seen tend to have some manner of bastard modding going on. I guess we're just not into mass-claiming all that much.
Also: Is it just a thing on this forum, or does the Mafia goon almost always get to choose and execute the kill by default? Just curious.
E: Also also: what the heck is it with people trying to leave outed Serial Killers alive as some kind of assassin? The only time this strategy had any use was in SuperMafia, where it wasn't even a Serial Killer - just a Survivor with a shotgun.
SKs don't win unless everyone else dies. Their goal can't work with the town, and the only way they'll help the town or scum is if there's some kind of personal grudge going on.
If you confirm one, it's plain cruelty to prolong its suffering. Just shoot the poor bugger.
No kidding. It is like the weirdest thing I have ever seen. A survivor you can keep alive because all they want to do is to be left in peace. They may even help scum hunt because there's always much less mafia then townies. A serial killer can't be negotiated with. End of discussion.

okay let me lay down some truths as a Pro Mafia player
never no lynch day one. just don't do it. plenty have tried arguing why it "makes sense" and failed, you won't be the winner. always lynch day 1. yes it's stupid, i know. do it. (the fact that it was brought up right before someone lamented the amount of town losses MIGHT BE A HINT)
mod tips!!!: no n0 nightkills. don't do this either. I dunno if anyone here has done that, but it's the most common modding mistake i've ever seen. when someone signs up for a game, they usually want to, y'know, play. even if it's just one day.
changing alignments are usually unfun for players, and make scumhunting even more of a crapshoot than it usually is.
okay also could some of you link some of the completed setups, i'd like to give them a once-over. designing mafia setups own and I love reading them and talking about them.
Seeing as the vast majority of games here are closed setup, and games take aaaages to complete, there's only about four, no wait, five I can think of. Three are in PL's Weird Mafia thread, and there's Sruixan's Schmaltz Estate setup.
I added five because Dersehunt has an open setup, but roles aren't generally revealed upon death (leastways from what I can discern, D1 went for over 40 pages in that game or some nonsense.)
i have some major problems with the dersehunt setup but since its still running ill leave it to the players
gonna check out the others
schmaltz estate seems pretty standard, i like it, but the town was definitely fighting uphill, lovers are a huge weakspot for them, while 4/21 (plus an sk) isn't bad at all, the playerlist was gonna get thinned fast, not a lot of room for mistakes.
weirdmafia isn't really stable, seems pretty hodgepodge. nothing wrong with this, its a good way to think up good role ideas for more structured games.
another thing i noticed, you guys only allow your scum to talk via pms at night? interesting
To be fair, I think I mitigated any usefulness in my free-reign Inventor role by being such a terrible scumhunter. Lovers dead N1 was never going to be a great start to it, though. The fact the Traitor (fuckin' Slipsicle) led us all on an extremely merry misleading path screwed us over something phenomenal.
But yeah, it was a full scum win with only the serial killer dead. Not my finest moment.
As for scum chat, for a good while it was just PMs. Dersehunt tried using an offsite free message board for their lovers, but there was an uproar or something after four unique IPs were found visiting it. I found a different one called excoboard, which can set things up so threads and board members are unviewable unless you log in - then you can close registrations and have a secure place for scum to talk.
I used that first in... Slorange's Wailing 20's, and set one up for my own mafiosos in my own Mafia game. It's the best solution I've found; what have you used?
E: Oooh, wait. Were you talking about private day communication? Not a commonly done thing on these boards, far as I know.
