Thread: Magic: The Gathering -- Vampires, zombies and werewolves! (Oh My!)

  1. #2451

Re: Magic: The Gathering -- Vampires, zombies and werewolves! (Oh My!)

Man, ROE was a set where insane stuff like Artisan of Kozilek is a goddamn uncommon. If AVR is up to similar shenanigans I fully expect to be seeing badass Angels, Demons, and who knows what else just all over the goddamn place.

For baseless speculation, I've been considering the thought that maybe Convoke could be coming back? It would help reduce the cost of big, giant creatures similar to how Eldrazi Spawn accelerated your mana in ROE, and the flavor works for both the Avacynian church and the Skirsdag cultists, gathering together to summon their champions of light/darkness.

God I hope not. That was one of the few Ravnican mechanics I disliked.

Still if we're going to have bigass angels and demon set like so many have speculated, there's probably going to be something that helps you cast your fatties.

    What's wrong with convoke?

it actively encourages you to play with tokens/weenie decks. I really really really dislike tokens, both playing against them, or with them. Urgh. I am an Aggro/Control player. If I wanted to do the Zerg rush thing I'd be playing Starcraft.

I guess that's a fair enough reason. Though not all spells with convoke rely so heavily on that sort of strategy... one of my favorite Convoke spells is Gather Courage, which only requires you to tap one creature to cast it for free.

Yeah even I have to admit that that spell was dope. Oh Ravnica Block. How we miss you.

What I really hope is that Avacyn Restored is a set like ROE that calls for it to be drafted by itself. That was cool thing they did, and I enjoyed immensely.

You're in luck! Avacyn Restored is a stand-alone set for drafting purposes.

I just hope devils become a supported tribe. I think the signs point to it (more devils in this set than ever, and mentioned in the lore).

This block is losing a ton of unburial rites targets, out of the stuff currently printed, which do you think are more likely to be targets? Drogskol reaver, reaper from the abyss, and maybe charmbreaker devils seem alright

That was soon. I was expecting it to be at least another two sets elsewhere. I thought they went three sets and then nostalgia trip. Guess I was wrong. Doubt it's going to be as good as the original though, but I don't care.

I also really wanted to go to Arkhos.

There has been so much Magic awesomeness today I can hardly stand it.

Avacyn Restored previews are sweet! Undying is still in the set, and there are two new mechanics: Soulbond and Miracle! Soulbond gives a creature and another creature paired with it some sort of bonus while you control them both, and MiRaClE spells let you cast them for cheap when you draw them (if it's the first card you've drawn that turn)! There are a bunch of Angels, too, some of them multicolor.

Oh, yeah, and that whole RETURN TO MOTHERFUCKING RAVNICA thing. I am ridiculously excited for that. I really, really, really want to see how the new style of design treats the plane, with its focus on resonance between story and gameplay. I want to see the set communicate the fact that the plane is a giant city through gameplay, which is one thing I've always been a bit disappointed that the original Ravnica block never did.

    AAAAHHHH

    oh my god

    so happy

    so much happy

think we'll get reprinted shock lands?

also multicolored cards in the core set???

Re: Magic: The Gathering -- Vampires, zombies and werewolves! (Oh My!)

I'm super excited about the return to Ravnica, I never played during that set but it always looked soooo cool. The Avacyn Restored cards look really sweet, I can't wait for the prerelease, I have a feeling it's going to be super fun, especially with opening the Helvault.

And about multi-colored cards in core set, I think it might happen, there's a rumor going around that Nicol Bolas is going to be in M13. I couldn't see them NOT printing him as UBR.

Re: Magic: The Gathering -- Vampires, zombies and werewolves! (Oh My!)

M13 advertisements at PAX have Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker on them. It looks basically confirmed that he's going to be in the Core Set. Pretty crazy. I wouldn't like it if he's just a singleton gold card there, though, so maybe there will be other gold cards as well as the "returning mechanic" for M13?

Dat card frame. Note that it works on the first card you draw every turn, not just the first card you draw on your turns.

With Jace and Niv-Mizzet in the very first promo image for ROR, how can one not think it's card draw themed? I'm excited. :3

(*goes back to his card draw themed Niv-Mizzet EDH deck*)

I just started playing in January, so I feel like I missed out on a lot. I just hope that I can make my Spirit deck better when Avacyn releases.
    I make atrocious signatures.

As far as I can tell from the story, they've given very strong hints that Niv-Mizzet can planeswalk now.

So either that's what happened or they'll come up with something else entirely and they've been throwing the hints to distract people.

What hints are these? Cite your sources.

People keep saying that Niv-Mizzet is a planeswalker but THIS HAS NEVER BEEN STATED ANYWHERE. It's entirely fanon that has spread and infected the community. Sigh.

Anyway, we already have at least two other UR planeswalkers living on Ravnica at the moment (Ral Zarek and Dack Fayden) so a third one is just a little bit ridiculous.

Re: Magic: The Gathering -- Vampires, zombies and werewolves! (Oh My!)

I guess the hint is just that he disappeared and no one on-plane, even those with connections to him, knows where he is or where he went. So I guess the fan-theories are that he either got a Planeswalker spark or he's so smart he found some other way to get off the plane.
