    GNUrb

I suppose there's no harm in getting into this. Better than meteors

Unfortunately, I'm one of those guys without a beta! Good news is, I found this obscure project from a few years back over here for the rest of you guys in my predicament:
    http://spamtheweb.com/ul/s1962010637_GNURB.html

It was supposed to be closed, but this zodiac guy leaked it or something. Anyway, it's definitely gonna have plenty of bugs, but I'll take those over meteors. It took way too long to get set up, but I've got the client running now; the manual says there's a workaround to connect to yourself, but my system can't support the client and server at the same time, they kill all four of my CPUs. Someone link up; it SHOULD be compatible with Sburb, but I don't exactly trust that it is, so this is an invite to mainly guys that didn't manage to get the beta.

Ping me, I usually go by genericAnomaly

Thanks to anyone who can lend a hand!

    Re: GNUrb

I torrented my copy and it's not working. Maybe I'll have better luck here?

I keep getting the message "Cannot locate bison.zip.upk"

Did I download it incorrectly? Why is some dumb bison file so critical?
Please hurry, I think I hear explosions outside.

EDIT: Nevermind, the bison file in SBURB was corrupted so I found a new copy online and now it works.
I can link up with GNUrb now, I just have to reset some stuff from my last session. It didn't turn out so good, I'm the only one who's still alive.

gA: Hey! You're showing up as connected to GNUrb!
gA: Can you see me? All I've got is this cycling text screen over here.
gA: It's complaining about mismatched bison files, but it gave me the option to ignore it.
gA: Hopefully there won't be any complications.
gA: There should be plenty of room in my apartment for you to deploy the GNUrb tech.
gA: Just please don't bump my roommate's stop-motion stage, or meteors will be the least of my concern!
gA: Thanks again for the save.
gA: Have you found anyone to connect to you yet?

MI: Oh hey, sorry about the delay. It took a while to scrap the old session, like the game was trying to stop me or something.
MI: The controls are all different, and the gear is too. I hope using two different programs doesn't make for a huge problem down the line.
MI: I can see you fine though, but I'll have to put stuff on the roof if 'm going to avoid that table. It's not that I don't have enough room, the cursor keeps jerking back and forth.
MI: Wait no that's my mouse. I'll find a better one later. Until then, can I use the roof or should I risk putting stuff in the room?
MI I haven't found another player who's willing to take part in such an odd session, but I'm sure we'll manage.

gA: I don't know how to get to the roof, but if that's the best option, than I'll manage.
gA: Try deleting the sofa, we never use it as a sofa anyway.
gA: I'm a bit worried, I keep seeing things out of the corner of my eye.
gA: I think it's GNUrb glitching or something.
gA: How's Sburb handing GNUrb's resources? The documentation says you should start with something called a Dowel Emitter.
gA: I think. It's not very well written. It's one animated background away from a geocities page.
gA: Do you see a dowel emitter on your end?

MI: Okay I'll try deleting the sofa, that should make room for a Dowel Emitter, or maybe a Code Press.
MI: What the hell does this stuff even do? I've seen pictures of the SBURB stuff, but the Press looks really unusual. Like an old time printer, for stamping papers or something?
MI: Ben Franklin called, he's way behind on Poor Richard's Almanac and wants his press back by Wednesday.
MI: Whatever stand back and I'll put the first thing down.
MI: Everything seems okay at this end, but I haven't gotten in yet so who knows.
MI: Oh yeah I got the bison alert like you, but I had more options than you did. I reconnected the file to the supposedly good one, even though I had to dismiss an important looking warning.

gA: I see the emitter and the code press.
gA: Jeeg, the emitter looks like a classical era sewer fixture crossed with a meat grinder. I hope it doesn't give me lead poisoning.
gA: There's a thing on the side like on submarine doors, I'm gonna try and turn it.
gA: Aww gross! Half of these pipes are falling apart! As soon as I turned it all this weird grayish goo came out like, half the seams!
gA: It feels like that stuff where they mix water and cornstarch; it's a liquid, but turns solid when you squeeze it.
gA: oh goddammit it's getting all over my floor now. At least there's no smell.
gA: I'm gonna have my hands full with an impromptu plumbing lesson for a little while here.
gA: in the meantime, see if you can find a server player maybe?
    gA: oh god it's spurting!!!

MI: Okay, I'll leave you to it. I wish I could deploy a tarp or something, but I'm running out of Construction Grits.
MI: Wait, no, there's a whole bunch, what did you have in that couch? I hope it wasn't important.
MI: Anyway I'll go back to the online forums and see if I can find another player.

Draykon, woud you like to be my Server Host, or whatever the title is in a normal session? I've got a legit beta copy, minus the bison file or whatever, and it probably won't be so buggy/dripping in corn syrup for us. (Fingers crossed)

gA: I' beginning to regret not going with the roof.
gA: I've got the leaks mostly under control now, it seems to be doing whatever it is it's supposed to do in the first place.
gA: There's this flashing light now. The manual says the blinking means it's filling the grout reservoir, and it'll be ready to use when the light turns solid.
gA: provided I can keep the stupid thing patched up! I'm gonna run out of duct tape at this rate.
gA: I really hate to do this, but I think I might have to run down to the convenience store really quick. Unless you can deploy some from your end, I'm sorely lacking the hardware I need to keep this stuff functional. I tried turning on the code punch and all these weird floppy captchalogue cards fell out. Like, from back before they switched to three and a quarter inch sylladices.
gA: Don't let my apt get to the medium without me! And I hope you find a server soon!

    MI: Wow, sorry about that.
MI: The house next door was actually the one on fire, but it disappeared all of a sudden.
MI: There's still some small patches of fire on the edges, so I might have to go take care of those later.
MI: I found the code for "Duct Tape Roll", but I tested it on an old card like you said GNUrb uses and it only had room for DucRol.
MI: I don't think you want one of those.
MI: I heard it's possible to transfer codes between card sizes, just really difficult.
MI: Did you get a message from RH? I think we should accept, it could be ages before we find someone else willing to join such a buggy session.
MI: Anyway, let me know if anything serious happens.

gA: Let me know when you've installed the client and Ill connect as soon as I can
gA: Im at the shops right now anyway, this phone chumClient is so slow and hard to type on

RH: That sounds more or less ACTUALLY SANE!!!
RH: Also your text color is very similar to mine, I wonder if theirs a color change button in Pesterchum...
    RH: Nope, nope their isn't.
RH: Yeah... My house is messy, you can delete all the messes and stuff, but DON'T. FUCK. WITH MY T.V.!!!!!

MI: Just click ignore on the mismatch thing.
MI: It says "Connection established", can you see me now?
MI: I live in kind of a big house but I think no one's home.
MI: I told my brother to try to get his friends to play SBURB so he might survive somewhere.
MI: Don't know about other anyone else though.
MI: My Dad might be around somewhere.
MI: Anyway, there's like a deck on the floor above the room I'm in, you can fit all the gear in one place I think.
MI: What gear do I get anyway, is it GNUrb or SBURB standard?
MI: Also I think you can change text colors in the newest version of PC, but what do I know mine keeps screwing up timestamps.

...You do realize Sburb is a) compatible with *nix, b) comes with a special subset of X Server for people who don't already have that installed and c) has a CLI if you launch it with the --no-gui command line flag?

I'm a Linux pragmatist - better that it be available working perfectly as closed-source on the Unixes than it be a quarter-finished open-source but nonfunctional program.

Regardless, now that we actually have a way to get Richard Stallman into the Medium without him protesting... actually, wait, no, I'd rather not do that. I guess you guys can take care of that if you want.

MI: Okay, I'm back, I had a bit of trouble too.
MI: My toilet got crushed under this Cruxtabox thing, I think that's where the dowels go to be turned into other dowels.
MI: There's room for one in your room, but there's no way I'm fitting the Alchemy Portal anywhere but on the roof.
    MI: It's HUGE.
MI: And kind of freaking me out.
MI: If you taught a Steampunk to summon demons, that's what he'd build to do it.
MI: If anything evil get's through, I apologize in advance.
MI: Protip: To defeat the Cyberdemon, shoot at it until it dies.
MI: Oh yeah, I've been getting the odd number alert, but who cares at this point?
MI: I'd be surprised if there WASN'T a huge error that we haven't already overlooked.
MI: Also wow, I see your screen and I must admit, I don't envy you.
MI: Mine's not much better though, like a hybrid of the SBURB and GNUrb systems.
MI: So maybe worse, I don't know.

    MI: Okay look
MI: My studio is right next to the bathroom, and down some steps.
MI: I had to clean quite a bit of water out.
    MI: But I'm not angry.
MI: I think you can fit the rest of the stuff in the living room, but that Portal will have to go on the balcony.
MI: The meteors have slowed down in my area, I think.
MI: But probably not for too long.

    Re: GNUrb

orngjce223, I didn't get into the beta, this was all I could get ahold of. I'd be more than OK with something proprietary like Sburb. Actually, I'm not even on a proper FLOSS *nix right now, I've got a Mac so it took me like forever to build it on Darwin.

    gA: Hey.
gA: I deployed the first free thing in the list.
gA: I think it's probably the Dowel Emitter.
gA: If you're using GNUrb. If you're using SBURB I think it's a Cruxtruder.
gA: Heads up if it's a dowel emitter, you might want to put down a tarp. And capthalogue some duct tape.
gA: Best I can tell, the client player supplies the resources.
gA: What can you give mI, SBURB or GNUrb stuff?
gA: I think I might be able to bring SBURB stuff into GNUrb with the *.srf files, but I'm not sure how.
gA: Or if that would even be close to a good idea.
gA: So, I'm going to deploy the other two free things to the room you're in.
gA: I wish it would show me the footprint before it drops the thing. This tech is really big.
    gA: oops.
gA: What was that? Furniture just shows up as #'s for me.

    gA: Hey
gA: This thing is... Well I see what you mean by steampunk daemon summoning.
gA: And this replaces the Sburban lathe?
gA: I still can't get the emitter to open. For a machine that's built like a Victorian-era cruise missile, the reservoir is really solid.
gA: I think it might be stuck shut by the grout.
    gA: Got any suggestions?
gA: Oh yeah the Code Punch seems to be working.
gA: It finally punched one of those useless floppy cards. Trouble is is ejected it a little violently.
gA: That's it sticking out of the wall.
    gA: Oh, shit. I gotta

MI: I'm pretty sure that half the gear I get in my house is SBURB and half GNUrb.
MI: But none of it is responding.
MI: I found a walkthrough by the Zodiac guy, it says you have to have all the gear in place and enter ##run/phantasm/000001/execute##, but I'm not sure where.
MI: I have an idea, though
MI: Take a look at the Alchemy Portal

MI: There's some sort of keypad on the side, you could to enter the command there.
MI: And maybe make a blood sacrifice.
MI: The walkthrough is pretty vague about that.
MI: You guys had better have a tarp on hand when you do, because the Phantasm Mentor is supposed to make a big mess when it comes out of the Emitter.

gA: Ugh. Stupid roommate and her stupid sleightKind specibus.
gA: Just got soundly beaten at cribbage.
gA: ALMOST won, then she lays down four jacks with a five on the cut.
gA: Strife is a little weird around here.
gA: OK, got the code, now I need to get to the alchemy portal.
    gA: I don't suppose it's remote enabled...
gA: Bringing my phone, I'll let you know when I get to the roof.
