Re: Movies 3: Return of the Chati

I just saw that! I couldn't find a Youtube link for it though.

The actual story is better sounding than the trailer would have you think.
Set in the Middle Ages the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) discovers the Smurf's village and chases them into some woods and the Smurfs get scattered. Clumsy Smurf (voiced by Anton Yelchin) wonders into a "forbidden" grotto and a some of the other Smurfs follow. Since it's also blue moon, a magical portal within the grotto transports them into Central Park in New York. They take shelter with a married couple (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) and try to find a way back to their village before Gargamel finds them.

Wow that's got every ingredient to be awful soup.

It's like they just reversed the colors in MS Paint to make those monuments blue.

Oh goodness gracious, notice it's set in "our world" like the Garfield movie, instead of being an animated fantasy setting. Ugh.
    EDIT: I didn't see Captain2's post

Let me direct your attention to SMURF'd
So this is an old tv show for kids. But let's use graffiti style letters and misspell words to look modern!

Smurfhappens.com <=== the most lazy joke imaginable

If it turns out anywhere near as entertaining as Masters of the Universe or Star Trek IV were, I'm sold.

But Star Trek was already a live action series, ostensibly in our world, but in the future.
It's dumb when they're shoehorn characters into the modern world anachronistically for cheap jokes. (I haven't seen Enchanted) Enchanted did it because that was the whole point of the movie, not because they had no better ideas. And so they pulled it off successfully.

And Enchanted also had the distinct advantage of actually having some good writing behind it. :3

Re: Movies 3: Return of the Chati

Maybe it is called smurf happens in order to subtly lower the audience's expectations of the film, and to provide a sort of grim resignation as the film is aware of its own fate.

Also, how come they only turned like three landmarks blue?

Again, I believe this is to further the lowering of expectations: see how at no point in the trailer do the smurfs interact with human beings. Indeed, nobody reacts at all to their arrival.

Perhaps the most blatant is the smurf's inability to stay on the moving taxi, indeed, it is a fast moving, modern world, and these "hangers on" are unable to keep upright. Also, why are they on a taxi.

Also, where is gargamel. Or smurfette. Or that cat.

Also why are the smurfs looking out into the audience but yet never making eye contact with the camera

this gives the impression that they are looking at the floor, or bottom, of the "barrel" that is the cinema housing the film.

Perhaps they are looking for movie ideas

URGH I HATE THIS FRIGGIN' MOVIE I DIDN'T EVEN LIKE THE SMURFS WHEN THEY WERE CARTOONS AND NOW THEY'RE IN MY WORLD?!

Okay so I went back up this page and I read a bit of that synopsis and you know what I bet that is what happens but you know what else

I bet when they get to new york they will adapt to the lifestyle pretty quick

    there will be attitude

there will be a black man who owns a hot dog stand and he says "right on" (or words to that effect) regarding the smurfs' behaviour

there will be tiny fist bumps with neil patrick harris

aw man it won me over again

the more I see of Scott Pilgrim, the better it looks. I "have" the comics, been meaning to read them. Haven't yet. Should, though.

definitely gonna see the movie though.

I don't think I've ever even seen an episode of The Smurfs. That's me: encyclopedic knowledge of Nu, Pogodi! and the works of Ralph Bakshi but I can't tell you anything about Smurfs except what Donnie Darko taught me.

I go back and forth on how I feel about most of Donnie Darko but the Smurfs discussion and the tracking shot through the school to "Head Over Heels" are completely awesome. Oh, and "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!"

Voyage of the Dawn Treader was probably my second favorite book, first being A Horse and his Boy, and third being The Magician's Nephew. So yeah, I'm fairly excited! Its the sort of book where the current special-effects addicted cinema attitude actually has plenty of material to work with, between water turning things into gold, islands of living nightmare, and pretty much the entire scene at the wizard's island.

So Toy Story 3 turned out really good.
It was a really nice movie.
Too bad that people are trying to make it into something more than a good movie with a good plot.
God the places I go have people treating it like Dante's Inferno or Faust and that gets on my nerves a great deal.

2 out of 4 reviewers say it's better than sex

Sex, as with many movies, tends to be a bit overrated.

It depends on the people involved in making the movie and if you have an emotional connection with a particular actor involved

    or... wait

how would the director fit in to this analogy

I've heard that Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello were nervous about doing the sex scene in A History of Violence so David Cronenberg brought his wife in and had sex in front of the whole cast and crew.

I'm not sure how this answers your question but hey David Cronenberg's a badass.

I am not sure how that makes me feel about David Cronenberg but

what's his wife doing these days

Re: Movies 3: Return of the Chati

She's probably still doing David Cronenberg if it's the second spouse you're referring too.

I just saw Titanic for the first time. It's actually quite a good movie, but I think the tragedy was somewhat cheapened by their little romance.

This is exactly how I felt. Would have been so much stronger as an ensemble piece.
