Re: Adventure Plots Up For Grabs

I've had this idea for a while now, but I can't art, and the artists I've been trying to collab with are the slowest -.-

You, Daniel Hebita, are the lone male member of Madam Tulane's Finishing School for Fine Young Ladies. You meant to enroll in it's brother school and neighbor, Brian Flanagan's Manly School for Manly Men. The all boy school teaches you to take care of a pet hawk, wrestle bears, and climb mountains, all while looking incredibly handsome in your kilt. However, for whatever reason, the administration has put you in Girl's school.

The adventure would consist of the main character trying to sneak from one school to the other. All of the students would realize he's a guy, but none of the teachers would. He'd get to spend his days doing girl's night out activities, and very angrily painting his nails while watching the students at the school he SHOULD be in learn to leap out of windows into a helicopter. He'd frequently receive lover letters in his locker, only to have his suitors realize he was a guy, reveal themselves from their hiding place behind a column, awkwardly ask for the letter back, shove it in a different locker, and return to the spot. These were all wonderful story arch ideas I had.

IN THE FUTURE but not very far the esteemed Professor McScience has created a machine that can p. much turn anything into anything. Want a cheeseburger? Sure, get me a rock. Want two cheeseburgers? Bro you get me two rocks.
Anyway, long story short, the pos explodes, and it turns the world into a writhing, ever-changing landscape of madness. Dotted around the world are 'sane spots' that managed to avoid being turned into an insane mess somehow.

It is now ten years since the incident, and humanity is now learning to cope with the aftereffects.
You are now one of the intrepid bravetypedudes who are trusted with venturing forth into what has been dubbed 'the madness', trying to make sense of it and possibly bringing the world a step closer towards A BRIGHTER TOMMOROW

Re: Adventure Plots Up For Grabs

The world is coming to an end. There's no way to stop it and no one to blame. The universe is just too old; slowly expiring. Despair fills the air, crime and suicide are on the rise and many people just doggedly continue their regular lives in the last years of the universe. You are one of the latter persons: a foundling who has just come of age, leaving the orphanage you've always known as home. Most people don't want to raise children, not when the world could end at any moment. You struggle to get a job, striving always to ignore the encroaching sense of doom. You finally catch a break, a decent job under a fair boss with a brave disposition. Then, it happens. The universe ends...

    And you're still here.

In a half daze you find a mysterious person standing over you. Your eyes are too bleary to make out any features, but you find his voice vaguely familiar when he begins talking to you. "Work hard. Learn everything. And above all, never give up, never give in." he says before you fade into oblivion. You wake on a grassy plain in the middle of nowhere. As you search around, eventually you learn what you can eat, where you can sleep and overall how to survive. Time passes. Over the weeks you've lived here you've only seen animals you don't recognize here, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that there is someone else here. Try as you might, however, you're never able to actually catch up with them. Maybe it's that strange man who talked to you when the world ended.

Much, much, much more time passes. It's been a long time since you first came to this place. Several things have become clear to you. Aside from the person you are trying to chase down and yourself, there are no other people here. While you certainly still hunger and thirst, you actually don't need to eat or drink to survive. You remember past events much more clearly than it seems you should (though your memories of before you came to this place have become fuzzy). The strength's and skills you've accumulated have not diminished with time and you don't age any more. It's been hundreds of years. You're still chasing down that person. Your pursuit and the thought that there is someone else out there are the only things that keep you from going mad. That and the stranger's words to you when everything you knew ended.

More time passes. You've constantly been on the move, trying to catch up with your quarry. You've noticed that the animals and plants around you are markedly different, more so than can be explained my mere regional variations. The climate has changed dramatically a few times as well. For several thousand years everything was covered in ice. Now that ice age has passed and the climate is again warm. You finally find an occupied camp. But it's definitely not the person you've been following for centuries. You've found a small tribe of primitives. For a time you're occupied living with these people and learning their ways, but you still have a burning need to find that other immortal.

More centuries pass. You've come across other tribes and peoples and learned their culture as you were charged to do by that stranger oh so many years ago. Some revere you as a god for all the knowledge you've accumulated and your own personal power, but that doesn't concern you much. You need to catch that other immortal.

Tribes turn to kingdoms, war brews, empires rise and fall. You're there for all of these things, eternally wandering. Hunting down the only person in the world that can truly understand you. Things have changed so much, yet you can't shake the feeling that everything is becoming familiar somehow...

The world is coming to an end. The universe, unlike you, is just too old; slowly expiring.Despair fills the air, crime and suicide are on the rise and you are closer than ever to finding that person you've been hunting for millenia. And then the world ends. And you find him. You are once again on a grassy plain in the middle of nowhere. You see a man standing over a youth. You hear him speak to the young man slipping into unconciousness.

"Work hard. Learn everything. And above all, never give up, never give in."

The young man slips off into sleep and the other slowly turn to face you. You're absolutely certain that this is the one you've hunted all this time. You finally see the face of the one who has been the only constant in your life.

    It's you.

Re: Adventure Plots Up For Grabs

An idea came to me in a dream, which I refined upon waking. Specifically the idea was for a character, and I formed a world around him when I woke up and didn't want to let it go:

In the future, self-augmentation took off. For a time nearly everybody who could afford it got cybernetic modifications of some kind, whether to make them stronger, faster, able to see and hear in ranges others could not, resistant to age, better suited for their jobs... even smarter. Technology boomed, the economy boomed, and for a time everything seemed good.

Then without warning war struck. One day there was peace and prosperity, and the next nuclear Armageddon rained down from the skies. Since almost all the mentally-augmented individuals in the world governments died during the short but brutal war, the world can still only guess at what caused the war. A few believe they know.

Society was set back in many ways, but the parts which survived recovered. Most surviving major cities are sprawling, self-sufficient manufacturing centers which are generally distrustful of outsiders. Anything else the city has to offer comes second to its manufacturing abilities, as even now people are not willing to give up the wonders that technology brings. Outside the cities, the wastelands more closely resemble the traditional nuclear aftermath; tribes of nomads, tribes of brigands, tiny villages trying to make do and survive unharmed. The looming cities ensure that even now technology is not completely lost, even the technology of self-augmentation, though outside it often goes only to the richest and most powerful, or their most trusted soldiers. Occasionally an adventurous soul, a social pariah or a technologist wishing to make a name for himself leaves the cities for the wilderness with enough resources to stoke the fires. Outsiders are distrusted within cities but most will allow them inside if they can pay their way; things the city needs but cannot produce are used as currency within.

Our protagonist pretends to be merely a wandering merchant, bringing to each city the things other cities have in abundance but they do not. As such he is welcomed into most even despite the clear and gradually growing physical augmentations which he claims let him travel unharmed. But in reality he serves a much less tolerated cause. After the war, as he examined the evidence and searched for an explanation, he came to the conclusion that it was caused by augmentation of the brain. When a mistake is made upgrading one's arm, it becomes apparent within days and you return to demand it fixed. When a mistake is made on your brain, you may never notice your goals, beliefs, perception of reality or ability to reason being warped and shattered, and if you do there's no guarantee you will still want it fixed. The brain is so delicate, and the potential for subtle errors so great, that anyone to be allowed it. At first he tried to convince others of this fact, but he was never the best of speakers and those he most needed to convince were often superhumanly good. Eventually he gave up and decided to take matters into his own hands...

He wanders alone from city to city. He brings to each the things they need most from afar, and is welcomed, but always he searches with eyes augmented for any who have or intend to receive an augmentation of the brain. And when he finds them, he kills them. He convinces himself it is necessary, and needs only look out his window to remember why.

Title: Easily Broken (begging a Title Drop in a "this is the reason I have to kill you" speech the first time he kills). Adventure would probably start with him arriving at a major city loaded with some material they need, like raw iron ore, preferably with no exposition (an image showing the clearly enhanced protagonist and the walled technological city in the middle of a desert ought to tell more than enough to get you started, and the manufacturing center thing can be made clear with the first few update once inside).

    ----------

Alternatively, it just takes place in the Megaman X universe somewhere late in the series and the main character's a non-Maverick OC reploid hunting (what he perceives to be) at-risk reploids. That's how it was in the dream. But it'd end up borrowing the setting while filled with OCs, and the setting doesn't quite fit.

There is a wizard, known by all. He is also a raging alcoholic and rarely sober.

The adventure can be told from the perspective of this wizard or from someone else, but either way, this drunk wizard is the main character/protagonist.

During a discussion in Digital Electronics on the differences between Serial and Parallel.

Something with a "Parallel killer" instead of a serial. We had no clue how that'd work, but if anyone could figure out that insanity, it'd be someone on this fora.

Clearly, a parallel killer makes careful arrangements so that several people in different places all die at once.

Would a parallel killer be multiple people planning to commit murders at exactly the same time in the same way?

Maybe a parallel killer would be a time traveller who travels back to kill several different people in different locations at the exact same time?

A parallel killer is someone who can go through the different "lines" or parallel universes where you decided to do something slightly different and other things happened because of it. The killer would kill all the different "you"s to make sure you cant interfere in any way with whoever pays him/her.
Of course, this would cost a lot to pay for.

It is the year 200X. You have just moved in to your new house three days ago with your newlywed spouse. With a recent promotion in a steady job, subsequent relocation and adjustable-rate interest-only mortgage to go with it, and a possible baby on the way (you saw the adoption agency just yesterday), the only troubles you have to worry about are the ones your chronically-misbehaving dog digs up. It looks like you're finally going to settle into a calm life!

You and your spouse are taking out all of the objects from a box to go in desk drawers in the study when your dog who you swear is half demon barks at the door outside to get your attention to be let in. You let him in from the backyard, wipe off his muddy paws, pet him, and turn away. Then he goes up to the rug by sink and starts vomiting uncontrollably. At the sound of his retching, you sigh, roll your eyes and turn to look at the mess you'll have to clean up. However, when your eyes come upon what he has gagged up (and is continuing to gag up) astounds you to the end of your wits:

A pure, throbbing flow of bottomless yet tumorlike darkmatter. It slowly, but unceasingly flows from your dog's mouth to congeal on your kitchen floor where it reflects not an atom of the sunlight pouring through your window--instead, it drains the color and brightness from everything basking in the antiglow around it. You scream in utter horror at the otherworldly sight--and in response, your dog, still vomiting, turns to the source of the scream and barks and barfs simultaneously so that a splash of darkmatter is spit directly at your face and your eyes and at once, you are blind to this world and know only of the Other World, the one that will surely take this one over as your dog continues to throw up an endless void.

Now, you must learn to make sense of what you see in the Umbrealm and how it corresponds with what you do in the real world as you--with your with your four remaining senses and your spouse at your side--try to figure out how to save reality and what to do next. Do you prepare yourself to fight the dangers that await you here alone? Do you run from that which, in time, will see none run from it? Do you make the call to the powers that be--who, by their recent odd behaviors and drills just might have some inside information that could help them protect you (...or help them protect the public from ever hearing about you)? Or, do you take your lover's hand, brace yourself for what you cannot brace yourself for--what lies on the other side--and take the leap into that lightless abyss delivered unto us by the DOG OF NO RETURN?

Re: Adventure Plots Up For Grabs

You are a member of an army of bestial monster people who have come through an interdimensional portal to invade the human world at the behest of your dark master. Your particular unit has been sent out to one of the far flung reaches of the human kingdom to cut off a major trading route between them and one of the other weak pathetic races of this world. Unbeknownst to you, a small army of united humans and other normally quibbling races has successfully enacted an unlikely plan to break through the core of your forces around the dark portal and are about to cause the permanent closure of the portal at the cost of the lives a small force led by one of their greatest heroes.

Your unit has just successfully invaded and razed a small town when the portal is successfully sealed. Just after you deliver the killing blow to the last of the town defenders, your large spiky axe suddenly feels much much heavier, and your loincloth and skull belt are suddenly a lot looser and no longer an adequate amount of clothing. Your horns, tusks and huge physique are gone, replaced instead for a somewhat short, scrawny body. Turns out that your race was cursed/blessed by your dark master to be turned into a warlike beast people, and once the portal closed you were cut off from your master's power and the curse stopped. You no longer strike fear in the hearts of men and frankly, you don't really have any more interest in killing.

Unfortunately the humans know what your race looks like now and recognize you all as the invaders who have caused so much destruction. What will you and your unit do in a world completely hostile and suddenly a lot more dangerous for you?

Re: Adventure Plots Up For Grabs

Schlock Mercenary already answered this question. All you have to do to be a parallel killer is kill a lot of people at once. Like, say, with a bomb. Kinda a boring answer, but it's an answer.

Though the person who earned that accusation in the webcomic was using a planet-sized hyperspace Death Ray rather than a bomb, if that saves any of the coolness factor.

Re: Adventure Plots Up For Grabs

Another idea that came in a dream, though this one clearly influenced by what I'd been reading last night:

The story takes place in a Stepford Suburbia, a perfect little town where someone just happens to die from an "accident" or "natural causes" or occasionally "suicide" maybe once every three weeks. It's creepy but stable and people learn to live with it, since anyone who doesn't tends to have an accident.

Then one day, people start dying without any of the subtlety. On Monday someone is found with stab wounds in his chest. On Wednesday, a girl is found decapitated. On Saturday, someone whose face was bashed in with a hammer while lying in their own bed.

Can our hero convince his friends that these murders are from a different source than the other deaths and thus acceptable to investigate? Can he put together the pieces and figure out the connection between the victims and the identity of the killers while carefully avoiding uncovering any information about the "normal" deaths?

Optionally the "hero" moved here with his family about a year ago, but quickly caught on and adjusted to not opening his big mouth before it got him killed. He's made some friends and isn't quite considered a dangerous outsider anymore, but isn't as conditioned as everyone else to completely ignoring the murders.
