    Re: The indie game thread

    Guess what was released today?
    GIRP
GIRP is the spiritual successor of QWOP.
GIRP has all of the overuse-of-Physics that we so enjoyed in QWOP.
GIRP is extremely difficult, but much more playable than QWOP.
There is actually a difficulty curve in GIRP.
GIRP, in fact, is very very fun, for even more reasons than silliness.
I recommend that you go play GIRP now!

You WILL feel amused when you figure out how to actually climb.
And you WILL feel a sense of accomplishment when you learn how to reach really far handholds using physics and pure toughgrit.
Then you WILL feel like a superman badass the first time you successfully manage to do an acrobatic swing, jump, and catch.
I don't know what you will feel when you reach the goal at the top of the 100 meter cliff, because I've only made it 36.4m so far. But I suspect it is something like total life fulfillment.

Stuck on 23.6 meters. I think I just got a bad set of random handholds because there is pretty much no way to get past the point where I died.

    Re: The indie game thread

It took me a while to figure out that ring placement's not actually random. I've made it past that point before, so let see if I can get there again and remember how I did it.
EDIT: yeah, it's a tough part:

EDIT: oh god, I think I'm holding this with the wrong hand.

    Re: The indie game thread

Oh ok that makes sense. I'll try that, if I can ever reach that spot again D :

And you're right, it's definitely not randomly generated. Actually, with enough patience, you might even be able to make a map of an ideal route up the mountain...

For some reason, I think this game really captures the feeling of rock climbing. You feel like you're straining along with the character to reach a tricky handhold, and when you finally figure out how to climb well, it's oddly satisfying.

Yeah I definitely agree about the feel thing. I got the chance to go rock climbing only once, but it was the same sort of thing: reading the area above you and plotting out what spots you're gonna go for in what order, and then the challenge of actually propelling yourself to the next step. Low intensity pauses with quick, unsafe-feeling bursts as you're reaching for the next handhold.

Foddy makes some interesting things. Too Many Ninjas was my favorite before (link), but I think this has decisively replaced it.

    Re: The indie game thread

Oh god, fuck you minecraft, I'm just playing the old alpha because like hell I'm paying $15 let alone 15 euros for you. As revenge, it is suddenly 3 AM and I can't find my way back to the tiny prison cell with the treeline fence on the coast. But because I built a giant brick tower lighthouse thing to show where I emerged from the series of cases, I found my way back to the pier. ALL FOR NOTHING BECAUSE I DONT HAVE AN ACCOUNT AND CANT SAVE AND I WENT IN KNOWING THIS.

Then I built a little house overlooking a bay ripe with exposed mushroom cave store-rooms in a natural overhang. There is gold and oil everywhere, its two stories, I have a patio and a bedroom and a kitchen and a hall of trophies and a skylight and an indoor garden. I kind of wish there WERE creepers in this version, I want to see it explode in a satisfying, helpless way before I abandon it to the ether OH WELL.

The horrible, horrible part about this is that Minecraft went into beta. It now costs 20$, and if you bought it in alpha you get free upgrades forever. Not so if you buy beta.

I just beat a game I downloaded from steam called Ben There, Dan That. If you're into monkey island and other point and click adventure games this is one game you shouldn't miss. Part of it's appeal is the amount of time put into the comedy, if you go around trying to use items with just about anything there is a funny joke to be told. You also get the sequel in a bundle pack that's at a pretty low price all together, I highly recommend this game.

If I mess around with the old alpha again, maybe I will. I posted that after having closed the window to stop myself from playing it until who knows how early in the morning.

This was my best guy before I tried taking on a golf twice my size just now. I've loved this game for a long time, but it's one of those games where you play it for a while then come back to it much later. And the thread went unnoticed probably because we've already mentioned it like 5 times here and the link dump thread :P
